i have some catchall categories (games i am thinking about / games for zoe / games that are french or in french)
two categories for completion
several categories for ratings (+++ to ~~~)
but in general i reorganized my steam collections so each collection is a specific developer
it feels a little more like the old days this way, when the name of the studio seemed to matter a lot
i have multiple backlogs, differentiating regular games and ones i want to 1cc, as well as games iāve beaten which have extra modes/difficulties that could be interesting. also a category for cleared games.
the other important groups are multiplayer games, so i can keep tabs on what local or online games i have.
then i did make a while back several ill advised genre categories that dont really help. defining things by genre does not help.
the only games I have on digital stores are ones Iām forced to buy cause they have some critical multiplayer component. everything else is done the old fashioned way installed in a games folder. I modify every folderās created by date to be the release date of the game so I can view alphabetically or by release date. for pc games if I have like 2 or 3 games at least by one developer Iāll make a folder with the developers name. I have windows libraries for movies and games spread across different folders or drives so everything can be gathered and viewed in one place. folders set to view as large icons with an image of the games/movies cover as a folder.jpg image in the folder of course
i guess to the point of āwhy categorizeā i find it a useful way to think about games on an analytical level. if i didnāt uncategorize anything i think it would feel the same daunting-ness as when your desk is covered with stuff - which mine is - but for a collection of artistic objects, my music or my games etc, i find imposing some minimal buckets of āthis artist, that artistā helps me think about it that way, and even to get excited about exploring my backlog more. like i want to know what Walter Machado likes in his games, whatās his deal? i havenāt played these old Ensemble games, what were they about? type of thing.
I donāt keep track of what I own. I assume whatever I want to play is within reasonable reach, so I donāt have an organized database of āmyā games. What I do have are several spreadsheets organizing games I want to play according to region, release year, console, average playtime, development studio, and number of staff in the credits.
I just categorize everything highly arbitrarily except for my category thatās entirely dedicated to the artform that is eastern european gaming of all kinds. For example, the mount & blade category is not just for those games, but any game with a similar style like the idk mercenary company type gameplay. Looking after a group of guys in a big open rpg world. Itās just to keep track of this genre of game I really, really love. But then the pleasures category is all over the place with random games I love in general, I put all military games in psycho/racist/american basically by defaultā¦you get the idea.
sorry to disappoint everyone but the horny category is all otome games about being a ninja girl and then dmc5, doa6, hades, street fighter 6 (because the developers were wackin it). I think ff14 is in there because some of the characters talk real dirty, like the blacksmith npc in limsa who talks about sticking your manhood in the forge.
Also there are 508 in Uncategorized, lol. I only started doing any categorization relatively (in terms of being on steam) recently. I am glad things can go in multiple categories though.
Damn and this is just Steam. Probably got about the same scattered throughout the other big storefronts and then thereās Itch⦠So like, probably 4-5,000 games? Average playtime of 20 hours.
Carry the oneā¦
About 11 years or so worth of games to play, and my life expectancy based on family history is like⦠15 more years. Better get to work lol
Edit: maybe I can cut a year or two off because a bunch of the games are already completed, but damn
