also microasteroid patina on the forward panels (when making way). uh the top? idk how Gundams move medium distances
they juts fly around all over the place in space so juts wreck them completely
Trying out a lot of new stuff on this Zaku I which I’ll probably post about later but I am pretty happy with this handpainted monoeye
i need to get me one of those panel lining liquids, i think i hate gundam markers
I got some of the Tamiya Panel Line Accent Colors and I like them a lot! I think there are still situations where the markers work better but they’re my go-to now. They’re a lot more durable which makes getting a crisp line easier (I always end up rubbing away more than I want with markers) but you can still smudge it while it’s wet for ~effects~. Lighter fluid as a solvent is actually pretty convenient, the bottles I’ve seen have a little spout that’s great for just putting a drop or two on a cotton swab. The fumes are definitely more than with a marker but they aren’t lacquer paint bad or anything.
One annoying thing is that the orientation of the piece while its drying matters. It will absolutely pool at the bottom and I’ve had it completely drain out through a seam which is kind of funny actually
oil paint
I deeply, deeply detest this Kotobukiya Knights of Sidonia kit. I’m not going to finish it I think. Tons of frail, weird little pieces that fit together in a very seam-liney way to make a bizarre, finicky, hideous transformer toy. the giant rocket backpack with the slidey inside part immediately breaks. many pieces feel like they are insulting you for daring to assemble a model kit, but not in the way i’m used to from bandai nogrades or WAVE five star stories kits, in a different way. it was a good experience but also the experience of saying “fuck it, i’m done with this entertainment activity” feels healthy
oh it also can’t stand up on its own!!! its articulated a million ways from sunday and the god damn thing cant stand without a base it doesn’t come with!!! p r i o r i t i e s
JUST IN TIME FOR BASTILLE DAY
My France Gundam is extra fancy, I painted all the grey parts gunmetal and the little bit of metallic really pops!!
If I had thought about it I would have painted the yellow gold but alas
I was really wondering how bad that model kit would work out, because Nihei did not draw those mechs to do anything other than float in space, and even then.
So thanks for the heads up.
My first fully painted kit!! It’s not perfect but I’m super proud of it!!!
Look how sad the mold colors are in comparison
I loooove the effect the gunmetal paint gives to the grey pieces, I’m going to use that forever and never get tired of it. It’s extremely forgiving too, if you miss a spot it’s just a little less sparkly and you can’t tell
My gunpla overfloweth…
yeah i need to get on that gunmteal paint i keep fucking forgetting when i go to IMT cuz i get distracted by something that amazes me
I have gundam fever now and I dug out the first kit I ever started working on, an MG Gouf Custom. I stopped because I had gundam imposter syndrome or something and thought I was super fucking it up somehow. I wasn’t! Some really annoying nub marks but whatever.
So I cut a bunch of pieces out, do some panel lining and stuff, clean up some of the already assembled limbs, etc etc and finally get around to actual assembly and find that I’m missing a critical knee piece
Who knows where that thing might have ended up over the last several years, and it’s super hard to get replacement parts for a kit. Especially one that seems like a grey market import lol
I actually found some legs in a JP auction somewhere, but with fees and shipping and stuff it’s more than just getting an entire new kit
Bummer!!
Which piece is it? I could check all my old Zaku runners to see if I have it. Unlikely but worth a shot.
