Hardware To Be a God

Literally anytime anyone mentions Green-Text or insists on the imessage reactions, I just mute that chat and maybe never look at it again. Thankfully, this has only happened like twice to me, but I still am amazed at people willing to do peer-pressure marketing for any company, let alone Apple.

om iphone when you get a text message from someone using an android phone the text bubble has a green background to alert the iphone user that they are taling to someone who cannot afford an apple product

and while I think it’s totally fair to characterize this as an intentional status thing on Apple’s part, iMessage does have useful features (it adds a bunch of emoji reactions using a superset of the SMS standard, which are equally fair to characterize as platform lock-in, but it also lets you concurrently associate your iMessage account with your phone number and with your email address, so if you’re traveling and don’t have access to your regular SIM card you can just keep texting like normal except over data, it’s a very graceful fallback, though I suppose travel is also bourgeois)

iMessage was nice on my Ting plan that charged me for how many texts I sent/received since iMessages weren’t counted as texts.

what if right

there are apps, plural, that do e2e messaging between both platforms

yeah Signal is fine and that’s how I talk to my wife and most other people but good luck getting the average group chat onto Signal

just give me a second to extoll the virtues of the out-of-order execution performance of the out-of-tree extensions Apple has made to the ARM64 instruction set, I find that being irrationally compelled by this stuff is a great way to make your class status completely incoherent

you know, every so often when there’s a news story about whatever company dido harding is in charge of this week getting hacked, i get half a dozen notificaitons that people who don’t give a shit about phones have made signal accounts it’s very funny

but whatsapp is fine

whatsapp is fine, it’s just that a majority of my friends don’t use it, and it’s still less good than signal, which means if I’m going to take on the burden of advocacy it’s not gonna be for whatsapp anyway

Wtf the new multitasking features on ipad are only for M1 devices? I absolutely refuse to believe “resizable windows” is only possible on the highest end hardware

I think it’s more of a RAM limitation thing; they only started putting reasonable amounts of RAM for multitasking in the latter models

The RAM thing isn’t a hard limit. Seems that Apple sees two options, “make it work for everyone, but a few people online complain that iPad on a second screen is kind of slow and sucky, damaging the brand” or “make people shell out cash to replace their perfectly good iPad” and it’s an easy choice

like the existing 3-apps-at-a-time multitasking UI feels arbitrary but to be fair my upgraded-to-the-max iPad Pro from 2018 has a paltry 6 gigs and even with that maximum any heavy multitasking on the thing involves apps getting killed constantly

I don’t see why they couldn’t have added swap support to the older models, though

You could have spent $1000 on a ipad air 4th gen on march 7th of this year and missed the cutoff

yeah, this definitely sucks, but I guess speaks to them taking a long-ass time to decide what the fuck the iPad is supposed to be
