Hardware To Be a God

i am uncomfortable with how much this ipod/mp3 player talk is affecting me

just going to convince myself that my phone is still ok for this it probably is but still

Phones are certainly OK! You can connect the ~$9 Apple Lightning or USB-C DAC to any phone and get better audio quality out of the jack than most MP3 players.

imo it’s kind of akin to a MiSTer or dedicated Android handheld: specialty hardware for people who like the hardware itself and want to mess with personally managing files.

I do not use a modded iPod myself despite doing a few for others.

way back before the ipod had official windows support with musicmatch pre-itunes i used some third party (possibly open source?) thing and that was great, like there have always been alternatives to using itunes

rockbox is very good

Rockbox in its initial form handled the jog dial really awkwardly. Hopefully they finally worked that out.

Update on the Macbook, I did not listen to Parker and I went with as much RAM and storage as I could afford. It arrives in three weeks.

I love the 13ā€ M2 pro I got. I hope you enjoy the air!

Wow Audacity (2.4) is snappy on this new laptop!

ok i’m running out of space on my phone for music so…what advice would you give me if i hypothetically wanted a standalone mp3 player

  • how much space do you need?

  • what file type(s) do you use?

  • how do you want to manage files, e.g. syncing or manually adding them to a file system?

  • do you want something new or modded?

  • are you comfortable doing mods yourself? ( e.g. converting a 5th gen iPod to flash storage and replacing the battery requires opening the case with a spudger and disconnecting/reconnecting ribbon cables, but no soldering)

  • any aesthetic or interface preferences? e.g. touch, physical buttons, iPod click wheel, etc.

I think a flash-modded 5th gen iPod with Rockbox is the sweet spot of nice hardware and ease but it’s also like half the size of a smart phone and I’d understand not wanting to carry something that large around.

space: currently my library is only at around 100gb so i don’t need a ton
filetypes: mainly mp3 but it would be nice to not have to batch convert wavs
management: i have a system! but it would be cool to just sync things instead of manually adding
new or modded: either is fine!
mods: maybe? i’ve soldered and stuff before but i don’t have a ton of room to do mods unfortunately
preferences: buttons are nice! click wheels are ok! i enjoy touch the least!

I think this ā€œvideo-sync=display-resampleā€ option mentioned there fixed my video problem, maybe.

I can’t for the life of me get my controller to do anything though. even registered as connected through bluetooth it is not listed as being available in retroarch or steam. I can hold the guide button and bring up some thing and that works but that’s all I can do with it. buttons don’t register anywhere else

I think @doolittle is right and it’s just a weird coincidence of the Elite 2 hardware IDs not being wired up on macOS — the $50 controller would probably work fine.

The weird thing is my partner’s Elite 2 was detected, I just had to go through and do the mappings manually in retroarch. So I’m not sure what’s different between our two cases.

Incidentally, I have a spare regular Xbox (Series) controller if you want @Parker, consider it payment for Zune parts and penance for mac usage

I’d basically do exactly what @OneSecondBefore did above except go ahead and do a battery swap and install Rockbox. You could probably do the whole thing under $100 but if you just want a 100ish GB MP3 player there are flash options but they tend to be very cheap sports-oriented or dated Android hardware.

yeah the basic series [x] controller works with no issues at all

This makes me grateful to live on a planet where copper is relatively abundant. Definitely one of the top 20 elements on the periodic table
