According to this article, GPU prices have normalized close to MSRP but it also predicts they have more room to fall. Crypto miners have stopped buying new cards but they largely haven’t flooded the market yet with their used ones.
In general, the computer chip business tends to be naturally deflationary so I would default to waiting until you need it before upgrading (as has always been a good practice prior to the recent pandemic/crypto anomalies).
I think we’ll continue having cycles in which there are technically like four “good” months every two years to actually buy a GPU but even so I think broco has the right of it, hedging on these purchases almost never amounts to much
Does anyone recommend a lite app for grabbing screenshots on Windows? I’ve used ShareX but I just think it’s kind of heavy duty for all I use it for, which is just highlighting portions of the screen to save as jpgs. I used to use puush but that isn’t around anymore I think.
Win+Shift+S - they updated the built-in screenshot tool recently. Also puts the shot in your clipboard automatically and opens a light photo editor if you click on the notification it makes.
GPU mining is effectively dead; BTC has been on custom ASICs for years before the market was cornered by miners, Ethereum is probably actually moving to proof of stake soon maybe and everything else is a shitcoin. moreover, cryptos across the board will have depressed value so long as we’re in a recession because everyone missed the point and the value of cryptocurrency has a nearly perfect linear relationship to the strength of the global stock markets
if AMD wasn’t launching AM5 later this year, the lowered demand for computers in general and memory specifically would make right now the best time to build tbh
the consensus is that while they had more “use”, as miners are profit-oriented, they were usually underclocked and undervolted to save as much power as possible and probably have an equal amount of wear and tear that a gaming card would receive, which notably spend a lot of time at full tilt at stock or overclocked
Further attempts to troubleshoot my battery not charging fully:
So my computer doesn’t have any battery-preservation stuff that would keep it from going to 100%. Switching AC adapters and power outlets didn’t do anything. Neither did various permutations of driver installation, hardware removal/reattachment and power-cycling. A windows update and a CHKDSK did not also magically resolve the problem which sometimes happens with Windows.
An article said “manually recalibrate your battery by letting it run down to about 5% and then let it charge!” And now it only charges to 25% lol. But who knows if that’s even accurate?
It doesn’t matter that much because as mentioned I basically never unplug this thing, and I did confirm that in the worst case it’ll run off AC power with the battery pulled. If I have a few minutes of battery life as a backup in the event of a power outage that’s sort of all I really need.
Solution? Hide the battery indicator so it’s out of sight, out of mind.
The M2 Pro feels like the future. This is replacing the 2007 Core 2 Duo MacBook I got right after Apple switched to Intel.
I played a few games on Steam to test it out then played GCN Auto Modelista in an Apple silicon build of Dolphin. My battery is at 96% after all of this.
I read about the 256GB SSD being slower in the M2 base model vs the M1 base model, but apparently you’re immune to that if you upgraded the storage.
This is also my first touchbar experience. I love it so far even thought I guess it’s on its way out? I was ready to hate it.
Is homebrew still the best package manager for OSX?
