xcloud runs really well on my mac and really well on my xbox. less so on a phone, but i’ve actually just upgraded that so maybe it’s more reliable there too.
definitely good enough for something like sable, i even had a decent time playing skate 3 when i was travelling a couple months back.
his macbook is ten years old and we’re not sure if his os is up to date, which means his browser may not be able to work with xcloud either. so that’s a concern.
frustrating too because microsoft’s support site doesn’t list requirements for osx browsers at all. ios safari is still a different browser than macosx safari, right?
https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/games-apps/cloud-gaming/supported_browsers
and he’s an illustrator/graphic designer so he almost certainly has pirated adobe products installed that prevent him updating his OS, if he was even the kind to be inclined to care about updating his OS at all (I don’t think that he is)
It’s from 2012? That should be able to decode H264 video but I’m not sure about the browser situation running a deprecated OS. I’m running it on my Mac using Safari but that’s Safari 15.5. ![]()
yeah, I’m sure it’d be capable of it in terms of hardware, but he may be screwed if he can’t update the operating system.
the steamdeck would be great for this but $300 is already pushing the price range. and they are still hard to get ahold of.
The only other Mac I have on hand is a pre-H264 decode 2008 iMac or I’d test it, sorry
For a dollar (inclusive of the game and streaming service), you could always give it a shot if that appeals more than the windows machine on the way
I’m impressed you found a decent $300 windows laptop, gj
i can try an '09 macbook later
Spoofed a Safari 6 user agent and it doesn’t work, points to the help page you linked above
If he’s running El Capitan/10.11 he can install a current version of Chrome fwiw
that was gonna be my guess, that he’s limited by however far back chrome support goes at that point
checking it out, Sable seems like a perfect game for an illustrator/designer who can’t update past Mountain Lion because of pirated Creative Suite
im playing sable on an '09 macbook pro. it’s on 10.11.6, so can’t vouch for earlier os stuff, but surprised how well it’s running.
seriously it looks exactly all of the artwork he does. it’s like it was made for him. he draws line art of desert landscapes and animal skulls.
his macbook is allegedly up to date though. she might keep the laptop bc she was needing to upgrade anyway. I guess we’ll see what happens!
Wow the steam deck’s software is fucking rough
Tapping out morse code on a guitar hero controller would be less frustrating than this on screen keyboard
I plugged in a keyboard when setting up the Sims for my partner
Are you using the touchscreen, touchpads, or gamepad controls? She likes using the touchpads
this is 80% of why I still don’t really want one, I trust the array of shims they’ve cooked up at present less than I do a thin client setup that actually offloads most of the complicated steps involved in getting Portable Steam between eg Windows and iOS equally. like I’ve spent too much time with different Linuxes running under different kinds of baremetal configuration in the past decade to want this as-is
there’s clearly a market for them having managed to iron this out into one shipping product though
Were you setting up either The Sims 1 or 2? I am curious to see those on the steam deck but I figure 3 and 4 would more or less run fine without any complications.
Nope, I was setting up 4. I imagine anything you can install via Origin (via Proton) would be fine, though, I just added a launch argument
the soft keyboard itself is fine, it’s the same Steam Input keyboard that’s been around for years. unfortunately, the touchpads on the deck are a smidge too sensitive to registering presses on it so I end up with a lot of typos I wouldn’t get on a Steam Controller
then again I’m stupid enough to use a Steam Controller to type shit into the terminal unless I’m going in deep
