Hardcore Will Never Die But Hardware Will

This is how I learned there was a HoloLens 2

I do keep wondering how long consumer vr is gonna stick around…though I have a feeling if it didn’t exist anymore that would be the kick in the pants for furries to develop an open source version of it, which would lead to billion dirt cheap Chinese headsets of varying quality around 3-400 dollars.

I think it’ll always exist as a niche thing for sim racing/flight sim people at the very least

I think Valve’s new standalone headset is still coming this year but it’s like they could easily decide not to ship last minute and it won’t be cheap probably

I got one. It turns out the 16:10 screen is amazing for 4:3 aspect ratio games (old emulators).

I’m super impressed with how powerful the Z1 extreme is.

This is now the most modern computer in my house

I’m probably going to upgrade the 512GB nmve drive to a corsair MP600 Micro 2TB down the line.

May dual boot and try Bazzite at that point.

This is a fun toy! So far I’ve mostly just played Demon’s Souls (rpcs3) on it.

Edit: 16:10 screen not 16:9

Edit 2: Damn the price is back up to over $100 more than what I paid.

I just tell Windows I’m on a metered connection. I’ve never seen my PC update on its own. (This might not be a good idea but it’s been working for me since Windows 7.)

well that is not better

But is it worse?

I disable automatic updates on all my internet-connected devices using built-in methods if available.

Google Chrome begs me to re-install it because it can’t install updates. (Had to use methods that weren’t built-in in this case.)

I like it like that. Better for my sanity. Until I get hacked or start crypto mining for someone else. That I’ve got no money in the bank and almost maxed out all my credit cards helps me sleep at night. I’d be more concerned if I had more to lose.

I only update if something doesn’t work anymore. Like new Nvidia driver for Space Marine 2. Game runs ok in 1080p medium settings on a 980 Ti imo.

I knew people like you existed but it’s always fascinating to come in contact with somesuch person for real

I have acquired yet another used Thinkpad, but I can’t think of stickers to put on it. Please give me suggestions.

Edit: I got these. I have a few others coming already so I probably have more than enough now.

Benren is gone, someone has to keep up the hardware eccentricity.

Oh well, it’s all a matter of perspective. From where I’m standing, everyone who does perform all these ā€œmandatoryā€ update rituals is crazy.

Is not updating that outlandish? I guess it is. At some point they’ll lock it down and I won’t be able to disable it anymore short of disconnecting, but everything truly will be a service at that point and you can’t own a service. Maybe we’ll just rent everything. That’s ok. Until then I shall persist.

My banking app just told me that it will start obsoleting itself soon. iOS 16 will be required. Now this is where the convenience of not updating ends and I’ll have to retire my iphone 7 plus. Now I admit that I’d love to get an 8 plus, but it’s still weirdly not much cheaper than an XS, so I might as well get face IDed. Progress is inevitable.

Ultimately it’s your computer so this is just me pointing out the reasoning and considerations you should be making, not an admonishment, but

The days of computers getting pwned just by existing aren’t necessarily over, even if it’s much better than it used to be in the 2000/XP days. Zero days still come out, seemingly legit software can be tampered with or whatever, and you can be as safe and cautious as you want, everyone makes mistakes eventually.

OS/software updates do keep your computer more secure and narrow the window for you to get infected with some nonsense. Yes, updates can also be invasive and bring unwanted additions. Both of those things can be true.

Maybe you value and prioritize the other side of things, but you should at least be aware that’s what you are doing and the position you’re putting yourself in.

isn’t there a gpo that gets you security updates but puts off features for 18 months or something?

Any advice on a laptop touch pad that is suddenly behaving very wonky?

  • deciding right click is always held
  • Activating a mode where i can recenter all of windows 11 (???)
  • Can’t move down
  • Precision movements are impossible

Honestly I would describe it best as someone has remote access to my computer and is fucking with me

I don’t really want to be at the bleeding edge of software production. You’re right that it is a trade-off between the nonsense OS/software updates infect me with and the potential nonsense they protect me from.

Should I use Linux instead? Of course. I have a Ubuntu live image on a usb stick in case my Windows dies. But I wanna play games too.

ThinkPad evangelism isn’t eccentricity, it’s just having good taste

Can’t think of many other business-class laptops I could use as a hammer and be worried for the nail in the process

Think pads are cool but since 2020 theyve been way outclassed by MacBooks.

Maybe now that x86 is sorta caught up w arm64 thinkpads are going to be good again but the really cool thing is old thinkpads so… gotta really wait for that recent vintage hip thing at least for a bit
