Hardcore Will Never Die But Hardware Will

feels like popup shit on websites now is at least as bad as it was in 2004 without a popup blocker. no end to the lifetime subscriptions and newsletters and cookie notices

The web has become an utterly miserable experience like 95% of the time

crossed over some threshold where transcoding folders of music with ffmpeg in terminal is effortless but syncing it to my phone and an ipod earlier annoyed me to no end. like moving my hands off the keyboard to mouse is an indignity. not proud of this

still hate the thinkpad nipple tho i’m not putting arch on a T460

would appreciate any tips on aging gracefully as a mac power user. i look at shortcuts on iOS and sigh

thinking about this again… I’m really not sure how much they can bump the memory totals on the 5xxx series within their current pricing structure – the whole reason the 4xxx series is so memory starved is because they price their H100 compute hardware like 15x higher in terms of pure compute; an H100 actually only beats a 4090 in terms of memory (which is needed for big AI models), it’s slightly slower otherwise.

forgive me but I have done an unspeakable act (used systemd to configure a NIC instead of /etc/network/interfaces). rip to a run of 23 years

PS if anyone is seriously considering a current gen GPU I hate this one a lot less than every other retail option that existed until now (I don’t think you can buy it yet but it should be available for $750-800 by next month)

it’s still very expensive for what’s positioned as only a mid-high end product but considering that they don’t really make GPUs that cost a normal amount of money anymore unless you’re getting something 3+ years old or aggressively cut down, this is at least a credible investment, should last a decade, etc

clicking through to that product page and I remain amazed 4 years in that the killer apps for raytracing are 20+ year old games and Cyberpunk, a game that needed a rehabilitation campaign

Procured stickers for my FreeBSD laptop. They should arrive in a week and a half or so.

in the year of 2024, Google has invented something new!

… it’s not like Firefox broke the tabgroups addon multiple times a year until even the most avid fanboy/userbase gave up because you lost all tabgroups multiple times, so kudos to Google for developing something so spankin’ new, wohooo

fwiw i use this extension to do that without AI. i always have a million github and jenkins tabs open at work and this helps keep shit organized

anyone got any experience with backblaze b2

having a huge clear out at the moment so can finally upgrade from a thinkcentre with a single spare sata ssd* to a real fuckin’ nas. was thinking about using rclone to backup to the nas and b2 for the stuff that i really can’t lose

*not to sneer at the thinkcentre, these are really good and dirt cheap as like a raspberry pi alternative

Not sure how to fill the empty space, but this is my FreeBSD laptop so far. Debated whether I should permanently put a symbol of Leftist Extremism on there but ultimately I had a sticker in my hand and impulse decided.

But LISP isn’t that extreme, isn’t it?

In other news,

… well.

Well.
They make it sound like there’s no way to put a gpu into an mITX case, which is correct if you aim for a 4090, aye. Just put 16gb of RAM on a card and don’t OC it, that should be enough for a somewhat compact card…

ahem

Mind you, my VEGA64

has a great time in this Fractal Terra case, so it’s not impossible, but newer cards that provide some tangible benefits sub 800$$$s …
