At least 343 gave me the perfect image for how I feel watching that trailer
Yeah I’ll play this game!! Some of the side stuff they showed off like enemy bases and upgrade trees gives me pause but the last Far Cry game I played was in 2013 so I think I should be okay. Hoping for a lot of that banter between Master Chief and Cortana-with-clothes to lighten up the open world doldrums too. But yeah I really like the look of this game, and I can’t believe I’m hype for a new Halo game after being checked out for over a decade.
I love open world big budget games about once per year, and I love halo (up to 3) so I’m definitely playing this at some point. I did not watch the trailer because I don’t like trailers.
I hate it so much
imagine being so cisgender and heterosexual you think halo is about Man and Sexy AI
I haven’t watched the trailer yet but lemme just say one thing that always pissed me off about MLG HaloBros is this line they often say about “upgrades and skill trees are anathema to competitive multiplayer. put that shit in the campaign”
like no! do not put that shit in the campaign! fuck you!
did they forget that some of the best games in the series don’t have master chief or cortana
OK I watched. wow this looks like shit. just what halo needed, more quips and waifus and open world nonsense
I don’t think I’ll even play the campaign for no additional dollars until they ship co-op
i was pretty compelled by the end of halo 3 though when the chief goes into cryosleep and cortana’s left to keep an eye out and edge closer to rampancy… i haven’t paid proper attention since then but am i right in thinking there was a bit where he was serving cortana’s inscrutable motives and you the player were fighting against them? coz that seems pretty neat
Yeah, in 5 you alternate as
- Chief looking for Cortana who has discovered the AI “fountain of youth” and believes she must assume the “mantle of responsibility” as an intergalactic totalitarian ruler-by-gunpoint.
- Locke bringing Chief in for going AWOL grrr mad
It is dreadfully dull in practice but there is a bright spot in the writing near the end where Cortana starts reading their personnel files to mock them, like a little glint of Bungie personality in a limestone riverbed
get em Corti
how much is the UNSC space fascism stuff explored in the games anyway? like do ODST or Reach engage with it much
this is a great wiki IP
ODST and Reach engage with it but in such a way that you can read it any which way
-
ODST involves working for naval intelligence to recover a friendly alien engineer and all of the speaking characters are annoyed in a local-cops-at-FBI way
-
Reach starts with your squadmates talking to farmers like interpreters in Iraq and the strong implication is that you were sent in to put down a farmer’s revolt before phew it’s the alien baddies. Everyone dies in ironically ignominious ways for “Noble Team” to go out
Like the Infinity Ward Calls of Duty, they’re inchoately political and regurgitating symbols from other works
I didn’t remember that in Reach, it was hard to pay attention to the dull mili-babble in that game without instinctively tuning it out, but the wiki has the full text:
“ONI thinks it might be the local insurrection. Five months ago, they pulled a similar job on Harmony. Hit a relay to take out our eyes and ears, then stole two freighters from dry-dock. That cannot happen here. Reach is too damn important. I want that relay back online, Noble One.”
Harmony sounds like another planet so I guess this empire is big enough for a multi-planet insurrection to count as “local”. I don’t think it would be farmers though, more like an Al Qaeda style group maybe. The rest of the script makes it clear you are sent to the specific farm to investigate an as-yet-misidentified Covenant incursion, and the farmers all love their Spartan defenders
IIRC Halo uses “local” to refer to things within the same solar system
The Spartans themselves are designed as human government enforcers and just repurposed for the existential war against the Covenant so I was probably filling in the context from being an incorrigible lore-reader.
Incidentally, don’t bother with any of this, it’s a dead end story. Better to pull random text strings out of the D2 API.
In Guardians, there’s an entire act where your ONI (Now on par with the CIA as far as proportional reach and covert operations go) goon squad assist the Arbiter in claiming his homeworld from what’s left of the religiously fanatical Covenant. This is further expanded upon and complicated by the Kilo-Five novels, as I understand, which is about another ONI group providing weapons to various Elite supremacist factions to keep them as destabilised as possible.
4 is the one you want if you’re invested in how the terminal dementia of a wire-mother affects an emotionally stunted killing machine, both stranded on the dead prison planet from a long-lost eugenics obsessed fascist empire.
the kilo five novels are really great honestly, shame all the world building is wasted on telling AI waifu story
Honestly if this game makes me feel even once the feeling I got playing Silent Cartoggy for the first time I’ll be happy.
Also, you can grab some Orion inspired armour in The Master Chief Collection as well as some SPI one in future.
