One of my last pledge games for 2026 is the Famicom classic, Sweet Home. Sweet Home is like going to Paris, everyone says they’ll do it one day. And they never do. Except the time is now. Time to load up your emulators and the translation patch. We’re gonna enter the birth of survival horror.
The Inspiration for Resident Evil. There’s a movie even. I don’t know a damn thing about the game. I’m going in blind. Then after the first night, I’ll check a manual. Join me and try and not get killed by a Swamp Thing or a Reptile Man or a Jason. Before playing Sweet Home, any thing can happen, in Sweet Home.
I have always felt like this was something said to avoiding mentions of Alone in the Dark, like how gary gygax always insisted that dungeons and dragons, a game with balrogs and hobbits and elfs and orcs, was actually inspired by conan the barbarian and the moon pool
That they give you 5 party members and make you only have a party of two so you constantly have to split up because this is a horror game is SO GOOD WOW
Game Rocks. Almost got murdered by a zombie causing me to use my last healing item (which only heals whose in your party) and establish my first save state. Then I entered a room, got damaged in a cutscene and accidentally overwrote the save state and decided to live with it.
I’m torn between looking up the stats for weapons or keeping this old school and only relying on collective word of mouth.
Your word of the post is マルタ - wood log, or the island of malta
Oh shit I love Sweet Home. Back when I thought I might have the patience to make YouTube videos I was gonna make one encouraging people to play this game as the first entry in a series. I’m kinda surprised I haven’t seen any indies try to take a stab at the same structure.
So far I would say the game is just difficult enough to be tense. I’ve had to reload a few times when status effects happen. I feel like most of the story is going to happen on the status screen. Anyways I manage to get to the East Garden and turn on the generator and see the whole mansion in a new light. I can probably go into that room with the mummies. I stopped in the same room I started in.
霊力 (れいりょく) - Spiritual Power, same rei as in yurei (ghost).
Game is good. Not a terribly lot to say. I think you should play it if you like Japanese RPGs for the Famicom. This one is as playable as DQ or Mother.
I like that it is a tragedy, then turned into a nightmare. God damn this house is huge. And yet still like a micro-rpg.
When I went into the east-garden I couldn’t get the Resident Evil comparisons out of my head as I was attacked by white eyed dogs. Maybe there is a connection…
I finished this last night at 2am. I feel I had the ideal Sweet Home experience at the 11th hour half my team got trapped in a room and I had to search the entire mansion for where I put A ice pick. I got increasingly annoyed at the random battles, but that’s good! That’s the proper emotion.
I would say by midway through I was in no danger of dying (outside of traps or a really bad timed curse) and the early game only required a moderate amount of caution. That also felt very Resident Evil! I was very stingy with the health potions and had easily 5 or 6 left at the end.
I don’t want to make the Biohazard connections but the game feels like Biohazard, mixed with the rpg battles and the extremely limited inventory making you make choices on what to drop on the ground all the time.
Im a little past the generator and dealing with sticky floor puzzles.
Overall the game is a little easy fight wise if you get lost or confused you end up over leveled and monsters are no longer a threat. I do wonder if you can just run out of wood and get stranded.
Anyroads games is a treat. The movie doesnt spoil it.
