Gundam Thread

you’re the first person I’ve met who liked G Reco!

What do you like about it

I haven’t watched it, but I think the robot designs are amazing

I’ve been considering showing 2 episodes the Zeta Gundam dub in Anime Club every week because the show is wild and fun and also kinda hard to sit through alone

i enjoyed gundam 79 going into it blind, part of the fun was seeing how they managed fit a self-contained war story scenario + some character development + a longer continuity thing with emphasis on just following this big spaceship from point A to point B + a series of advertisements for chunky action figures, all into a condensed 22 minutes every time.

i remember getting to like episode 37 and being like “wait, is amuro psychic??” and the person i was watching it with was like “yes!! that’s why there were so many shots of his face with lightning crackle effects on top!!”. so i guess there was a lot of subtext i was missing.

my favourite gundam was the orange juice robot.

love that sound effect to the death too

I finished watching the three Gundam 0079 movies. I think I see why some recommend the series over the movies. There were a lot of parts that felt rushed, and there were instances where it was clear some character development had occurred but was removed. And I guess they cut out that orange juice robot, too.

That said, I don’t know that I ever would have committed to watching the original episodes. So I’m glad I saw the movies rather than nothing at all.

I think I will try War in the Pocket next.

I finished watching War in the Pocket tonight. I liked its length, its limited scope, and its focus on civilians. It was a good one to see right after the original series, with its references to the larger story. (I think I saw Char in one scene, unless someone else pilots suits of that color.)

I don’t know that I’ll start any of the longer series right away, but I wouldn’t mind seeing one more short Gundam thing so I might try Char’s Counterattack.

Char’s Counterattack is actually a followup to Zeta Gundam (and it’s not very good)

If you want another short one, 08th MS Team is what I would recommend

08th MS Team is good. I def recommend that.

Char’s Counterattack is not. Your mileage may vary! I was very disappointed by it. I thought it would give me some grand climax cuz so many of my favorite gunpla models are featured in it but nope, it does not deliver.

Except on this. This part was good.

Zeta Gundam is great and I promise I’ll host dubbed Zeta Gundam Club on-line soon. It’ll probably take a year to get through all of it but I promise it’ll be worth it.

CCA is at least nice for after three series of “STUPID ADULTS YOU’VE RUINED EVERYTHING” it reverses to stupid kids ruining everything. But also like @HOBO said more sweet Izubuchi MS designs.

cca also has an amazing theme song

btw, last week i finally finished zeta gundam since a kind soul uploaded all episodes on youtube (1080p!). ended really liking the dynamic between the different factions and sub-factions, even if the actual characters aren’t as cool as the ones in the original series.

wanna start zz one of these days, even though i heard it’s one of the weakest ones

new PV for the theatrical release of GQuuuuuux’s first episodes. this one reveals the whole gimmick of the setting (the youtube tittle has a spoiler warning to it), so if you wanna watch the show blind, don’t watch it

Shoot, that’d be so good to see on a big screen

I saw it in theaters in 2019 and it was great and I might have to do it again
