GUN GAL 2021: NO MAN'S GUY

My sincere answers usually don’t land with you so:

It’s 1998 and you’re waiting for Daikatana with bated breath. Half-Life isn’t out for 2 weeks. You have no idea how bad things are going to get.

I mean, like. Now

There are two reasons:

  1. You really like late '90s shooters.
  2. You’re interested in historical curiosities.

Sin is actually kind of cool and part of the wave of FPSes like Half-Life that shifted the core identity of these games. It’s much more juvenile and doesn’t stick the landing like HL1 does, obviously, but it tries to actually tell its pulpy bullshit story, the level design is solid and there’s all kinds of weird interactable stuff you can do to influence how future levels play out. It’s very much of the Quake 2 era where devs were shifting to linearity but still playing with it, so it’s really interesting as a footnote in the development of the modern FPS. For what it’s worth I like Shogo better.

The originator of the Rats map!

Sin had boobs didn’t it? That’s the only thing I remember about it from reading PCXL (yeah I was a horrible horny 14 year old judge me for it).

Sin Episodes has way more titty than the first game but you get to see a lovingly rendered '90s pre-rendered pussy area at the end of the first game.

The ultimate reward for every horny teenager disappointed that the “nude raider” Tomb Raider code wasn’t real.

Shogo is from the exact same time and much more interesting than any of its contemporaries if you get the joke but early Lithtech is an incapably cruel engine so good luck getting it running on modern PCs. I cursed Monolith for never making a Shogo sequel and now they’re making Lord of the Rings games forever. My powers are to be feared.

when is the nightdive ground up remake of Nakatomi Plaza

Nakatomi Plaza was originally supposed to be on Build, which is wild to think about, before it was on the HL1 engine and finally Lithtech 2 which is what No One Lives Forever ran on - that means you can still play it on Win 10 with minimal fucking around. I tend to agree with you that Nightdive should do something with it because it’s a very similar rights situation as the one they’d need to work out to re-release NOLF 1 and 2 lol.

It’s…weird. You have health bars for your brain, lungs and feet. It’s interesting in the ways it attempts to be faithful to the movie (you’re left-handed! the footstep noise is obnoxious because you dont have shoes!) but it has early 2000s licensed game bloat and thus you find yourself playing through a 30 minute long sewer level as a bad Bruce Willis impersonator. It is cool seeing them experiment with shot-for-shot remakes of scenes as level design though, it’s the same kinda way I was impressed with RE2 or the FF7 remake for doing it to the pre-rendered backgrounds.

Shogo and Blood II (also on Lithtech 1.0) are both on GOG (and half price right now)!

I played Sin when it came out and only remember getting absolutely destroyed by hitscan enemies on the first level which was a bunch of barren rooms and a staircase. And I also remember trying to quickly headshot their hairless heads and feeling bad about myself for my poor mouseaim. Did not make it far enough to see the stuff you’re talking about

As a console kid during that era (who usually got to play like 15 minutes of any given big release game that my PC gamer friend bought) I do have a lingering curiosity about a lot of the games from this time period.

In Arma 3 Apex: Old Man, you assume the role of a retired Legionnaire living on the South Pacific island of Tanoa. When a new strain of malaria causes yet another humanitarian crisis, and local authorities fail to distribute an effective vaccine to the civilian population, you’re tipped off about a possible plot. Together with a former military contact, you attempt to avert a catastrophic power play in the region.

How to play Arma 3 Apex: Old Man?
If you already own Arma 3 and the Arma 3 Apex expansion, you just need to download the latest Arma 3 update (1.98) on Steam. Afterwards, launch the game, go to SINGLEPLAYER in the main menu, click on SCENARIOS, and select “Old Man”.

The new scenario drops you into Tanoa’s 100 square kilometer tropical terrain with just a few instructions. It’s up to you to find your way around, gather intel, obtain weapons and equipment, and decide on the best tactics to accomplish objectives. While the scenario aims to offer an authentic experience, you do have access to a few convenience features, such as the option to wait and skip time, and the ability to fast travel between known safe houses.

Arma 3 Apex: Old Man provides more than 10 hours of playtime. It’s released together with a free platform update for Arma 3 (1.98). This update adds new static machine gun variants and several other assets to the game, and implements various fixes and improvements. The full changelog for update 1.98 can be found on the Arma 3 website.

Good luck out there!

Old man and their…flexibility will allow us to conquer the city on the hills.

A Receiver sequel launched years after VR is something to think about. What does it stand for if these interactions are much more faithfully realized, and much less artificially difficult, in game with hand controllers?
