Grotesque videogames

love that Virtual Hydlide

Did you get to the mansion area? Very uncanny, the way that indoors are presented in this engine

it is still so wild to me that the characteristic mid/late 90s pc game cinematic look of ‘poorly lit actors in front of green screens’ has, with a slight bump in technology, become the main way films are made in the 21st century

do you think george lucas was inspired by Jedi Knight cutscenes?

The boring answer is that it was the obvious future since the late '70s and the cheaper revisions in the 90s, combined with the poorly acted and directed scenes, servicing hastily-scribbled off nerd porn, run through incredibly lossy compression is a hilarious backwater.

But it’s funner to see Phantom Menace as Kyle Katarn fanfic

it’s not widely known that the Flaming Lips’ “They Punctured My Yolk” from their 1995 “Clouds Taste Metallic” was originally commissioned as the soundtrack to Riven’s ending cutscene (“cucked_by_atrus_so_I_have_to_go_to_space.mov”) but was cut due to CD size limitations

This might be the funniest 5 consecutive posts I’ve ever seen on sb

It’s likely to have been Rebel Assault 2 instead, which was the first piece of Star Wars media that was authorized to shoot new live action sequences since Return of the Jedi.

I actually like the way the character models look, but wow this battle system

Oh ugh that looks… bad

I think it’s the first time I see this game in motion. Wasn’t expecting that kind of framerate in 2019

Looking around at other videos and that video is actually not a very good representation of how the game runs. The animations are very much intentionally choppy with no inbetweens but the overall framerate is fine even on the Switch

Not sure if this is relevant, but this guy plays modern ish games on super low end hardware while tweaking settings to the point of grotesqueness.

I first played Half-Life 2 on Voodoo Banshee (basically a Voodoo 1 rebadge) without hardware transform and lighting. It wasn’t supposed to work

No pixel shaders, and no shadow maps loaded, either – everything was just raw diffuse texture output at lowest LODs. It didn’t look anything that, though.

no one ever talks about what a Live and Let Die ass name this was for a GPU

idk what was going on in their branding department, their API was a lube and their first product was a blaxsploitation villain

Someone with an Actual Modern Gaming PC needs to run the game with those settings and tell us what kind of performance you can get.

Ultima 7’s perspective alone makes the game grotesque IMO

I don’t understand how this game was released like this
I feel hungover whenever I look at it

It makes a lot of sense when you look at Ultima 6, which is strictly tile based but uses the slanted aesthetic to make its tiles look 3d, because then you understand this is just the natural evolution (it’s still tile based, but there are several layers of tiles and the tiles are smaller). It also allows you to sidestep some conceptual problems you have to figure out if you go the isometric (actually dimetric) way

That being said it’s functionally identical so of course there’s an exult mod that rotates everything 45 degrees.

Seeing it rotated 45 degrees always reminds me just how bad those tree sprites are

More than anything, I think its the wonky trees that make the game feel like its listing to port
