Grandpa Gamin' thread šŸ‘“

i think it’s more that you have to decide for yourself if you cheated

I didn’t technically cheat.

I mean, I guess.

I let the messages of ā€œTry rangedā€ and ā€œHereā€ tempt me, and after futzing with aim, well. I made sure to go down there with him having some health left.

But it didn’t feel like a good win :frowning:

Anyway, Kalameet seems to be my punishment.

Ohhhh god, my second attempt getting Kalameet to 50% feels more like a fluke than consistency. This dude is rough.

(Cognitive Dissonance: any replay of this game is gonna be on PS4, where I will tackle Manus with honor, and not arrows from several hundred feet overhead)

(Cognitive Dissonance Edit: I feel bad about cheesing him, but I am also Ready To See This Through and I Had A Bad, Very Bad Week, so even a hollow win…y’know…y’know…forgive me y’all :anguished:)

You won, that means you won. The game is designed this way.

At the same time, the shame Grandpa is feeling right now was also intended by the designers, I’ve become convinced

Here’s my motto

Everyone should adopt it

My motto is to make up an arbitrary concept of honorable conduct and then try to commit to it, which makes every boss fight feel like this

Did you do this?

I’ve tried before, but I’ve never been able to pull it off.

Yeah. After getting slammed by Manus over and over I looked at those messages and wondered what the hell they meant, then saw his eyes way down there in the darkness. Never knew you could just sorta hipfire arrows like that.

Black Bow of Pharis + Gough’s ring + 200 arrows or so got him whittled way down. I guess I could have just killed him that way, but I left him some health and went in there, and got him in a few hits.

He’s a lot easier to fight when he starts lobbing magic instead of leaping down fist-first and beating the shit outta ya.

At work right now but I gotta say, I am feeling super melancholy about my time with this game, but not in the way that sounds?

I’ve spent…hundreds and hundreds of hours playingopen world games that I probably couldn’t recall if you put a gun to my head. A whole lotta open space and content for content’s sake. And, y’know, I guess that’s fine? Everyone’s hungry to make 20XX’s ā€œur-game,ā€ the One Game you buy in year 20XX and play all year and maybe dump ten bucks into for some cosmetic junk or $40 for a few hour DLCs. And it’s cool, it’s probably a hellish nightmare to make and test such enormous games, but it feels like, I dunno. Gaming cud. Chew and mull on it til whatever nutrients you can get from it are, uh, got.

Comparatively! I’ve spent less than half the total amount of time on this game than I have, say, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and maybe save some of the more labyrinthian areas, I feel like I could close my eyes and envision every inch, every enemy (except maybe some of the one-timers), even the step-by-steps of some of the runs I’ve done trying to desperately find a bonfire or grab some item in a pit of enemies.

It rules, that the game is so well designed, so memorable, and it sucks because, given how committed to memory it is now, that first time magic is gone forever. I’m not gonna be shocked by the Asylum Demon leaping down, or hours later falling through the same arena to the Stray Demon. The ā€œwhat the fuck is going on hereā€ with The Bed of Chaos, getting jumped by that one slime in the Depths, etc. etc.

What it might lack in the more cinematic or story-heavy games I’m accustomed to, it more than makes up for with just a raw sense of satisfaction. I enjoy me a good cutscene, but that feeling of landing that last successful hit on a boss? Holy shit.

Anyway, a premature post-mortem, but unless the game somehow shits the bed in what I assume are the last few hours - this game rules. It’s a bummer it took me so long to get to it, but in a way I’m glad I did hold off til now. It’s been nice to have it to focus on and enjoy the last few months, for all of its infinite frustrations.

I dunno, maybe I finally have something to unseat Symphony of the Night as my semi-annual ā€œcozyā€ game. Just, y’know. One that riles me up, gets me hollerin’.

I have argued DkS1 is the best one and it sounds like given how hard you vibed with it, that will probably forever remain your opinion too, but the 6 other games in the Soulsborne complex still await you and each individual one has its defenders arguing it’s the best one too. Even Elden Ring maintains that ā€œclose my eyes and envision every inchā€ quality to a high degree despite being an open-world game

Jumping the gun but thinkin’ ahead - just wonderin’ what y’all think I oughta do after this one:

  • Dark Souls 2
  • Bloodborne
  • Silent Hill
  • Resident Evil 2 (Classic)
  • Resident Evil 2 (Remake)
  • Grind away at Splatterhouse til you finally beat that

Too early in the morning to become Jokerfied.

Edit: I can’t tell youse how many times now I’ve gotten him to one hit. The urge to go for that last unsafe swing…

Edit 2: This filter turning ā€œy a l lā€ to ā€œyouseā€ā€¦anti-Texan discrimination…
