Time to change my answer to Gravity Rush now that I got a copy of the remaster that I paid too much money for
Itās Ronnoc#1897
Iād probably have to say Bloodborne with Until Dawn a close second. The Witcher 3 had a big impact on me when I played it but I find myself not really thinking about it much these days (and still havenāt done the final push to finish the main story), which is weird, because Iāve spent a lot of time thinking about Undertale since finishing it even though I only found it āpretty great but not absolutely amazingā at the time.
MGSV gets a mention for playing really well on console in a year marred by slow load times and frame hitches. Other honorary mentions: Her Story, Downwell, Splatoon, and (sorry) Destiny: The Taken King.
The boring MGSV answer. I know kids like to talk about the PC master race or whatever, but for me, itās really cool to finally feel like Iām not missing out on major console stuff, despite not having one. The Kojima/Sony news was a bummer though.
I love Downwell so far. Iām not sure if Iāll eventually hit a wall with it and set it aside, or if itāll be one of those games I reach for whenever I want to play something quick.
And now the controversial choice: Triforce Heroes. Itās Left 4 Deadās uphill battle against the default hostile online gamer temperament, mixed with Link Between Worldsā stripped down take on the franchise, with a tiny dash of PSOās emoticons to limit player communication. Iāve been playing it with a friend plus one internet stranger, and itās been a lot of fun. I canāt vouch for the experience of just throwing yourself out with a wild pack of randos though.
Iām trying to think of other new stuff I played this year, and the only other thing that comes to mind is Gat out of Hell. It has the best Saints Row map since 2 (although so much sadly just feels like cool scenery to fly over), and the super powers are better than in 4. It doesnāt have the frills of character customization or the bargain bin compilation CD soundtrack though.
At the end of 2014, didnāt we have a GOTY2015 prediction thread? I guess I can recycle my answer for 2016āPSO2
Oh yeah, dropsy was good.
Nuclear Throne I associate more with last year, I had no idea they were actually planning the official release for this month.
I should probably play gat out of hell given how much I loved SR4.
Iām still surprised Iām the only one that has mentioned nuclear throne. The game is tight as fuck and expansive and triggers all the things in my brain that love games. Itās all gameplay, so, yeah. But the theme is great and unique and well put together enough to fill out the world.
the game is coming out on pc, itās just coming out on ps4 first
broco mentioned it back on old SB. I totally love nuclear throne (though I liked teleglitch a little more, I will sing its praises forever), but I looped it a couple times late last year so itās not as novel to me.
Whew! But 8 years later like Everyday Shooter?
feel like there were a lot of Very Competent releases this year but nothing outstanding
Has anyone played Underrail? People seemed to really like it.
Also what would be āoutstandingā in your estimation?
I think the reason nothing has stood out exceptionally well this year is due to the overall high quality of AAA mainstream titles. The inverse of this logic is Fallout 4, which probably would have been received far better had it not come out in the same time frame as Witcher 3 and MGSV (and even Dying Light?) which had well polished open worlds and were just kind of⦠more impressive overall. I think this year it was far easier for lesser experiences to stand out as opposed to good ones (also Splatoon is totally outstanding).
pretty much, this was probably the best āyear in vidconsā in a while
yeah. Lots of highly competent stuff, I have generally very positive feelings about current game design practices in many genres, but relatively little that would go on an all-time list this year. Probably nothing that beats original sin or towerfall from last year.
Necrodancer and mini metro and nuclear throne are all fantastic and all got 1.0 releases this year but I pretty much got enough of them last year.

i remember us doing this, yeah, but i didnāt find it, maybe the axe ate it ā¦
but! I found this: Some months down the road, this link will be magically broken, but does work at the time of writing, and nobody will remember what secret contents were hiding behind those two words ā¦ā¦
anyway, out of nowhere I pull these quotes by some RobotRocker guy who loves to do some C-C-C-C-COMBO BREAKERs. Why? Because I absolutely love their take on the usual GOTY-way of assessing a year in games.
Here goes:
SONIC GENERATIONS. I bought this for ~sub-5 bucks during a sale, and since it is a new SONIC game, I wasnāt sure whether iād like it. Not that I am good at any sanic game other than SONNICKART2, mind you. But, much to my surprise, I loved it. I got as far as unlocking the (first?) GENESIS-Sonic, before my PS3 HDD decided to die and obliterate my save-file. Will start again next year, is the perfect summer-game.
⦠hm. cannot think of one '14 game iāve played this year, so ⦠none?
EDF 2025. Because PS3-HDD, save-file R.I.P.
Honorable BONUS ROUND 2-mention : Driver:SF, even had a SF-celebratory sunday w/ this game this year.
Once again, Split/Second. Because my PS3 ate the save-file where I won almost anything there is to win. Best reason to - once again go through it. The only game where I was all āyeah, letās DO this all over again!ā, which shows why I am still playing this.
Iām by no means a big Sonic fan but Generations is the only game since the Dreamcast that I didnāt think was terrible, and it didnāt get quite the praise it deserved for that
Generations is maybe the only 3D Sonic that I enjoyed. I enjoy speedruns of it even more.
And of course (NSFW): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsM2ZbQtulM
I guess mine is probably just MGS5. Played lots of cool old games this year though. Metal Wolf Chaos and NOLF stand out.
Itās Bloodborne, you fools.
