yeah I have some hyper clods for playing Siege and as someone who never ever wears noise cancelling headphones I’m happy with the value / comfort / sound
So like, is that game really worth playing in 2019? I’ve never played it.

NiGHTS is a score attack time trial action game starring a non-binary dream jester that revels in the concept of analogue controls and is slathered with peak 32-bit aesthetic.
It’s one of my favorite Saturn games.

NiGHTS rules, probably the first game with an explicitly NB character, as Tigress mentioned. Excellent soundtrack and world design. The animation on the player character is so smooth and your movements are so acrobatic that playing the game feels like a performance.
Definitely read up on how to play it though. It’s not difficult to pick up, but it’s pretty weird and unique and nothing in the game itself adequately explains the scoring system.

I do think earlier PC titles must have been better about this than however people now choose to interpret Sega’s 90s aesthetic but obviously the aesthetic matters, I just get frowny at “probably the first”
Worth saying that NiGHTS is different from those examples Daphaknee mentioned in that the character was explicitly designed as NB and the game itself supports that reading. Of course, this was because the creators wanted to do some cool Jungian mysticism and almost definitely not an attempt to depict what it’s actually like to be NB, but hey.

I love Toad, Slimes, Mr. Saturns (hmm) as cute genderless things even if they aren’t “representation” by any stretch.
Most NB representation is going to be incidental androgynous people that you can connect with aesthetically. In games you have to dig deep to get anything that’s not a cartoon mascot or a fake out that betrays you (Persona!).
