Hm yeah according to the Wikipedia image, my blue is spot on but the others are off. I think I feel a little more comfortable with the photoscientia images, which don’t make me feel like I need to adjust individual monitor color settings. ^ D^

Oh I’ve read that article! When I was doing research on generating random numbers with various distributions for the sake of making a synthesized waterfall sound earlier this year, because the loudnesses and such of the “droplets” in a real waterfall sound don’t follow a uniform distribution. :stuck_out_tongue: That graph is really nice.

oh, i actually get what the graph is describing now. it’s pretty cool.

apparently the normal distribution (among its other nice properties) is the unique one for which the combined plot of identically distributed independent variables X and Y is rotationally symmetrical in the XY plane.

so you can start with that symmetrical property, take a square chunk of the plane representing combined uniform distributions of X and Y, and use trigonometry to obtain two normal distributions from that chunk.

It’s really interesting that the normal distribution is distinguished by having that property. It kind of makes sense because statements of it look very “circular” :stuck_out_tongue: with the √(2πσ²) term and so on but it’s still kind of surprising to me. I’ve been hunting around for a uniqueness proof I can follow but I think I would need stronger analysis skills maybe. :sweat_smile: It would be nice to know more about statistics/probability…I’ve read the first chapter or so of An Introduction to Probability Theory and Its Applications by William Feller but that’s about as far as I’ve gone.

As a side note, speaking of analysis and trigonometry, I’ve written like 80–90% of an exposition of why that formula for arctan works in the “non-videogame things you think about a lot” thread—at that point the pharmacy ran out of my meds and I kind of lost steam :ear_of_rice: but looking at stuff related to this I’m feeling a little out-of-practice analysis-wise so maybe I should try to just push through it anyway if it’s possible so I get some interaction with it in. I think it’s almost done so it might not take me too long even as things are (fingers crossed). The math involved is like, some of the coolest stuff I know of in calculus.
