Gangs of New York

Is two hours and forty-six minutes… no wonder I never watched the whole thing. I bet John C Reilly saves the film. He’s in it right?

i don’t remember!

i haven’t watched this since around the time it came out. i remember it being Fine.

I thought it was okay.

I want to say Scorsese is overrated but I have not seen some critical works from him so jury is still out. (Have not seen Raging Bull or Taxi Driver)

Taxi Driver is really pretty great. he’s one of those directors that definitely had like, “a time.”

The book that the movie is in theory based on is hilarious for all of its weird 1920s classist/racist shit, and the characters it describes are fucking nuts.

I have yet to watch this movie.

I really like Bringing Out the Dead as a movie. Might be my favorite Scorsese, actually? This is probably considered “bad taste”.

This is yet another one I have yet to see. I guess I have only seen all the modern stuff/gangster movies.

Bringing out the Dead rules, it’s probably the apex of Cage’s career and anticipates his descent into self parody brilliantly

Also apparently the author of GONY also wrote a similarly racist book about San Francisco with hysterical yellow peril vibes and I really want to read it

He also wrote one on the history of gambling or some such that I have a copy of and have not read.

To be a little fair to him, he is focusing on telling a lot of stories that wouldn’t be told at all if he was going full on classist/racist, but it still is present in his stuff. It’s very weird.

Yeah afaik a lot of his stuff was based on already sensationalized newspaper stories and such, v much a product of the times. I think those books are really interesting cultural artifacts I guess

Yeah, that is mostly what I think of them as. Some neat stories, probably not totally factual, and weird glimpses into both the past that is being told, as well as the past/present of the author.

the king of comedy rules

Gangs has a lot of nice period-accurate cutlery in it.

Gangs is pretty great if you can tolerate overstuffed prestige film Things

It’s been on my Netflix list since it got released Canadian side. I’ve got projects that can easily swallow that runtime whole.

Gangs of New York is bad but I do like that it reminds everyone of how hilarious gang names used to be.

Bringing Out the Dead owns

There’s a neat club in it too.

One Scorsese tick he edits his movies poorly in the modern era. His older films definitely were more fluid.

I never got comments like these, but especially since I finally saw the rock, which for some reason is the one people usually bring up to say that was from when he used to be “good.” seemed to me he’s been nicholas cage since day one and hasn’t ever really changed.

Trip report, put in two skeins of cross-stitch thread and was getting into a third when the movie ended. That worked out to about 2-3% of the project.

Overstuffed is right. Bill was a good villain, conclusion was well done but the middle part of getting there took some doing. It would have been better served if Scorsese decided on one particular idea to drive at instead of EVERYTHING. It had energy and verve for much of it, however, and that definitely helped keep my interest going.

John C. Reilly did not save the film; he showed up for some scenes, gets his due but wasn’t much of a driving force for the plot.

the movie would have been so much cooler if it didn’t have a plot, just a few days in the weird world of olde tyme newe yourke
