Okay, more like, “Games you want to but will never play,” but that was even clunkier.
“Should” gets kind of boring, because people start assigning themselves the homework of playing Little Computer People, followed by Ganbare Neo Poke-kun, so that they can have a retrospective on games about little people living in places.
This thread is about games you want to play–games you know you would probably enjoy or have a deep experience with, games you really would like to play, but that you are pretty sure you never will.
This isn’t the backlog. This is, “Yeah, I honestly don’t think I have enough time left in my life to get around to this.”
My list so far denotes a pretty clear pattern:
A Mind Forever Voyaging*
Wasteland*
All Phantasy Stars*
All Zorks
EVE Online
* = I can see myself firing this up for an hour with not intention of ever beating it
So whatcha got SB? Show me your withered ambitions.
I beat A Mind Forever Voyaging in a single sitting of about four hours, just a few years ago. You can do it; you just gotta read the documentation first.
So when you say “small town” you mean, like, in the medieval executed-for-being-rumored-to-have-cursed-behind-the-sherrif’s-back sort of way?
Edit: Oh wait, nvm. You mean they announce that someone has been banned. For some reason, I interpreted it as an announcement that someone is considered for banning, which struck me as a weird sort of social mind game.
Monster Hunter was originally on this list but then I sat down and ended up playing through three games in a row single player for over 500-600 hours.
The MGS series is an intimidating prospect but I played some of and then youtubed the msx games, so that’s progress.
I’m trying to list other games but I can’t think of any that individually feel like I could never dedicate the time for. Maybe you should play those games.
Most stuff that’s old or inscrutable enough that i won’t have the patience to go through it on my own (Wasteland is a good example).
Most stuff that’s on newer consoles (last generation and onward, i’d say). I’m considering saving up for a PS4 so’s i can play Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 but that’d be probably the last game system i’ll ever buy (ok, maybe i’ll get a used 3DS (when it’s two generations on and they don’t manufacture them anymore))
Probably anything that ever came out on a Dreamcast. or a Saturn or a Turbografix or any number of obscure/defunct consoles.
It’s so easy to just look up a longplay and experience a game vicariously now, i can slake my thirst without having to invest the time and energy myself. I’m confident i’ll get to play all the games i really want to at some point.
EX Troopers isnt impossible if you are flopping around in it but it is a game entirely on atmosphere and in the three hours I gave it it never was interesting mechanically or challenging. You could pretty clearly see the 3ds make up of the mechanics.
basically every game on my “backlist” is really just on this list instead.
there was a specific period in which I very interested in being a legit Vidcon Historian. basically all the games that I wanted to play as a part of that broad project belong on this list. the easy ones to name are the big, old, unwieldy games like Ultima VII or Midwinter.
I’ll echo courier on Monster Hunter, only that ship definitely did sail for me.
Alpha Centauri comes to mind
I bet I’d like Football Manager a lot (attn winkerwatson attn plz come home winker ;_
I could probably ramble on for some time if I really put the effort intoi it. instead, lets see what belongs on this list from my steam library! Rainbow 6, yeah. Ooh, Arx Fatalis, that’s a good one. Crusader Kings II. Do I care about Deadly Premonition enough to put it on this list? Probably not. Vampire: The Masquerade!
drakengard, nier, rengoku I and rengoku II, contact, MDK2, el shaddai: ascension of the metatron, terranigma, illbleed, forbidden siren, shadow hearts: from the new world
then, there are games i should play out of sheer resonance with my artistic/spiritual/sensual sensibilites but must learn japanese to enjoy fully
the saturn version of baroque seems like it would be really important to me
Most of this list for me could be retitled “games that I’d honestly just rather watch someone else play on YouTube.” Competitive FPSes, Paradox games, old 4Xs I’m too lazy to learn (Alpha Centauri I’m lookin at you).
Games I always know I’ll be willing to play myself are adventures, campaign FPSes, lawnmower simulators, and pretty, streamlined new 4Xs.
I look at No Man’s Sky and I’m like, I just don’t have that kinda time anymore. But then I just put 60 hours into Sunless Sea and I’ll put in more when the DLC comes out so who the hell am I kidding.
I’m about to give up the ghost on Bloodbourne just like I have with Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls, maybe. I don’t have the patience for honing my skills in a single game anymore, which might just be some weird part of a depression feedback loop but anyway. That makes them my @Father.Torque style “games I’d honestly rather watch someone else play on YouTube” for me.
