You can’t really “pay to win” in the traditional sense. You can buy Death Medals which can be used to buy random blueprints and materials from a machine, but they’re usually priced in such a manner that seems like they don’t encourage it, it often seems to be reskins of regular equipment, and there’s no guarantee you’ll even have the materials accessible to you yet to use the blueprints at whatever point you’re at or that your current ranked fighter can even equip it.

You can get a 30-day/1-Day Pass but for the most part that just allows you to use the elevator for free and insure you if somebody attacks your waiting room. I think there are some other minor things, but nothing that actually helps you “win” – there’s no bonus EXP or money, no super strong rare weapons, no floor skips, etc. Death Medals are usually saved up and used to expand your storage (it’s like, 2 medals for 10 extra spaces, which kind of blows), get random premium decals (that costs 10 medals and often you just get bullshit), and to revive your character when they die (which you can also do with regular in-game currency).

You can spend money on the game if you want, but it doesn’t really help you all that much or give you any sort of appreciable advantage other than you don’t have to spend your in-game money to ride the elevator but in-game money is pretty plentiful. I think I’ve spent maybe $5 on the game for some extra Death Medals so I could expand my storage, but you get Death Medals for completing quests and login bonuses. I just didn’t want to go through the effort of figuring out what materials I should be keeping and what’s useless so I just kept expanding my storage.

It’s more pay for QoL than pay to win. I think you can criticize a lot of Let it Die, but criticizing it as being “pay to win” seems to be more of a complaint from people who suck at the game.

As Villain said, Let It Die never really pushes you to spend money. At one point I got a monthly elevator pass just because I wanted to support the game, not because I needed it. (I wish I could have just paid for the game instead of supporting that kind of system.)

I beat the whole game and never reached a point where I felt pressure to spend any money. That said, the game definitely encourages you to grind and you could argue that it demands more time than it should even if it doesn’t demand money.

Of all the f2p I’ve tried, Let It Die seems the most honest about how much bullshit it is.

I just now found myself wondering whatever happened to the Let It Die sequel. It was released and almost immediately shut down? How could I have missed that?

Then I remembered learning a few years ago that it was going to be one of those arena games, and that’s why I had stopped paying any attention to it. That’s a genre I have absolutely no interest in.

Apparently they are planning to launch it again in a form that’s more similar to the first game. But I don’t know whether that would draw me in. As much as I enjoyed the original game I have never felt tempted to revisit it.

I tried playing the Android port of Dragon Quest V on my phone but between the vertical orientation of the screen and the weird mobile game controls (with no apparent option for controller support!) this does not seem like how I want to play a few dozen hours of jrpg

Guess I’ll emulate this one someday or something (prolly not)

Dragon Quest V is one of the best Dragon Quest games. You should emulate it someday or something.

I got the impression the project was a vague gesture at live service motivated by the publisher and without the resources. An asset flip from it would be cool but I don’t think we need more arena shooters

A great curse: the same iteration of the same game has controller support or no controller support depending on which company was contracted to do which port to which platform. Comes up when you’re playing things originally designed for controllers, now ported to mobile. Comes up if you’re playing things originally designed for PC, with controller support that was patched in for console never making it back to the home platform.

Have you tried out The Silver Case and Flower, Sun and Rain? They’re probably closer in style to a visual novel and adventure game, though you could almost argue that’s what Killer 7 is, just with some shooting sections thrown in. Everything after No More Heroes that Grasshopper did seems to just invoke Suda51 as a selling point but I think it’s debatable how much he was actually involved beyond managing the company itself at the time of their production…

Yeaah I need to try the silvercase again I have it on steam I bounced off it at a particularly bouncy time.
I have not played Flower Sun and Rain I really need a new DS. If only there was a translation of the PS2 version. Oh I can play this on Wiiu if I get it hacked. OK! Well! Now I have more reasons.

Baldur Gate 3 after A Lot of playing:

  • Like Divinity, the game is at its best when it’s Ultima sandbox malarkey allowing all the systems to bump against each other in silly ways. And they’re still best in class for this kind of tactical RPG combat, and their priorities are absolutely right in making combat the best part of a game where combat is your primary activity other than going through dialog trees and looting containers.
  • It’s extremely doofy when some subjects arise, such as its pantheon of gods. Forgotten Realms is built with so much Tolkien in it that it falls apart if you don’t approach some aspects of it with a similarly reverent and mythic tone. Larian have a clear preference for stories with more modern sensibilities, so you can feel the license grating against their work in many places. I feel this game and the recent D&D movie both highlight how moribund this setting has become, and how people mostly don’t know what to do with it other than lampshade it with jokes.
  • The further into the game, the more you can feel how much was ripped out, rearranged, or undercooked in order to meet ship date. It remains so much fun (apart from hitting the level cap looooong before the game wraps up) that it doesn’t really matter. You can spot ambitions that were foiled all over the place, yet the thing still feels like the best version that could have come together given circumstances.
  • The best companions are the ones with the biggest personalities. If you have someone like Wyll, who’s written like an ordinary, decent guy dealing with terrible circumstances, both the writers and actor seem like they’re struggling to find something to work with. Meanwhile Lae’zel gets to be Insane Horny Worf, Minthara is a genuinely funny caricature of her edgelord villain archetype, Karlach is a gay jock with deep pathos, etc. When characters like Withers or Dame Aylin show up Talking Like That at camp, I find myself wishing they were in the party instead.

Silver case is pretty easy to bounce off, yeah. Very dense and easy to feel lost coming back to it after a long break. Pretty sure that’s what ended up happening with me initially. I do think, if you can carve out the time for it, it is worth seeing through to the end though!

Also just a heads up that Flower, Sun and Rain is actually a sequel to it, even though I originally played it before the silver case english localisation was even released which… made for some very confusing moments in the back half of that game!

definitely the DS version, the added third wife option negs you constantly and makes you sleep on the floor, it’s actually a gameplay feature to help you stay humble even as you ascend closer to godhood the more you level up

FSR is the good stuff. Silver Case isn’t strictly necessary to enjoy it. Admittedly it’s hard to follow along with the plots as you play em. Just dive in and let them wash over you

Yeah, in a lot of ways I would of actually preferred if FSR was more self-contained. I think it works better as it’s own thing.
