Biggest weakness of baldurs gate 3 is definitely that they are using the dnd rules with only just enough house rules to make it playable instead of so many that it becomes a good ruleset (though tbf it is an impossibly tall order to fully fix 5e)

Much like real romance…

I’m at least 50% through Nine Sols now and well feel about the same about it. The game has given me new verbs that I should have had in the first place. It feels bloated.

It will get compared to Sekiro, but the thing about Sekiro is you can cheat. You can cheat and run away and engage how the game expects you to. You really can only engage the boss fights on the game’s terms in Nine Sols. I still haven’t switched to Story Mode because I am a stuborn idiot.

Finally seeing on the skill tree: Deal More Damage and being mad I put the skill points anywhere else but there. I hate I can and do lose experience when I die. Grinding it is a hassle. I should do that because the bosses keep ramping up in being cheap.

I’m currently fighting a boss that can split into 3 (classic). You’d think target the Real One, but they blip in and out so fast it is not really an option and as far as I can tell there is no tell. You iust have to dodge constantly and hope for the best. There is a way to stun them, but it takes your charge attack. And you barely ever have time to charge or heal. I’m sure I’ll beat it tomorrow.

I didn’t like Hollow Knight but this is about as long and HK had a lot more things to like and think about. I keep thinking this game is going to make me do The Messenger shit, which still remains my gold standard for kinectic 2D Action-Platforming.

It’s neat all the gibberish terms are slowly explained by the story. It’s done in a natural way. I did like the reference to El Shaddai and I do not like the reference to Star Wars.

there’s actually an el shaddai reference in that game?

How can you cheat and engage bosses on your own terms in Sekiro? I found the rigidity to be the point

I’m having the opposite experience and finding Nine Sols to be the real deal. Also having a much easier time timing parries than Sekiro - because of the 2D plane, clearer tells, and more readable enemy patterns VS NewFromSoft boss attack extravaganza.
I’m slowly learning to not mind parries

I can recall some cases where you can ignore parrying for more evasive strategies but not for all Sekiro bosses. The most memorable case for me (Ashina Elite Jinzuke Saze) you can just roll to his blindspot (the left) and get attacks off like other Souls bosses. I figure you have to have the bones/reactions of a teenager to react to that quickdraw with parry. The final boss can also be cheesed with some ranged damage since the arena is large enough to allow you to run around. I think the bull is also a famous case where most people ā€˜did it wrong’ the first time.

I preferred avoiding direct confrontation rather than always engaging in close quarters if the game allows it, and I generally enjoy parrying in any game.

Metroid Prime Remastered: perhaps they changed something(s) for the Wii collection or the remaster, perhaps I just wasn’t in the right headspace, but those last few bosses were- ugh. it’s like someone had been needling the devs about things being too easy, and Meta Ridley was the result.

edit: alright, what the hell? i just made this post and already it’s been blood potioned?

I finally got to fire up that new MvC collection, and somehow I had totally missed Dimitri’s little kid sidekick being in the straight Marvel one for all these years and she’s possessed by Akuma or something!? How was that not in my mugen folder back when?

I think most of the stuff I used to fire up my raspberry pi to play is now on my switch. This means I need to put even weirder games on my pi. Or just keep playing wizard of wor.

the soul reaver remasters are out!!!

i got this because i wanted a convenient way to play soul reaver 2 again, but i figured i would go through the first game again because why not it’s soul reaver. i played with the original graphics turned on, so the game looks like one of those hi-res psx style games that are all the rage right now.

but it is funny to change the graphics mid-cutscene, especially in the fight against melchiah:

(no pickles voice) her name is anita

she was a secret character until the ps3/360 releases, and she’s also unfinished and incredibly unbalanced. iirc she has a super that deals more chip damage than it does normal damage

I don’t remember having a problem with Meta Ridley in Remastered, but a friend who’d never played it before seemed to have an absolute nightmare time with that boss, so I have to wonder what has changed. I was on the original control scheme and he used the new double analogue one, so maybe it’s just inexplicably harder that way for some reason?

The lessons I learned are:

Lightweight builds avoid most damage as long as you hold down literally any direction, and speed is a virtue

Dual laser pistols are really slept on for cherry tapping hordes of MTs

Assault armor is good

Stun needles are good

the Meta Ridley fight has always been bad — even more so after they patched out the boost ball vulnerability

Homage if anything. dream like pastel color platforming section that repeats itself.

In Sekiro if you really use every single accessory in your arsenal it’ll cut Boss HP in half usually. I had a few giggle fits when I finally remembered to cheat. I played through Sekiro 3 times and I didn’t even like it because of the exact tactile experience it gave, but also it is absolutely excellent.

Lady Emperal in Nine Sols finally made me turn on Story Mode, which again does nothing to make the game ā€œeasierā€ just messes with your damage given/taken.

It felt good to move on and then immediately be hit with there’s a path forward in Proper Noun and no we will not repeat this information. 15 hours in they gave me the double jump and I just groaned. As I do every time a game gives me that late into it.

But also thanks game for letting me play your game even though one of your bosses was just obnoxious (actually like 3 of your bosses have been obnoxious but this one really had no reason to be as difficult as it was except it made this already too long game longer.)
