games you played today: winning eleven

Life circumstances made me fall off (of and feel reluctant to return to) the first one but I’ll probably claim the second one on PS+ and play it some as a fresh start

this is interesting to me because the first one pissed me off to no end, partially due to myriad glitches. including one time where i was just driving and grazed a wall and the game decided to teleport me backwards and put my car at a complete stop. just lots of “if you look funny at this obstacle it’ll explode in your face” kinda nonsense.

but i really liked so much else about it!! if i can pick up the second one cheap i’ll give it a shot

i think part of why this one has gotten more hooks into me is i decided to try out the online and in every lobby there are 5 tracks to pick from:

2 from the game proper
3 custom levels from users(!!!) (usually they give you one with a lot of “likes”, one with very few, and one in between)

the custom levels are often bonkers, like people make great stuff alongside some troll-ass shit where going full speed or boosting will just launch you directly into the sun

there’s a certain slapstick to the obstacles, but i think in the first game i got more of a “what the fuck” feeling rather than the seemingly-intended “lol”

i don’t remember having the strafe-boost stuff in the first game, was that there? being able to double-jump and side/strafe-boost in this game is super helpful sometimes when you’ve clearly overshot and need to somehow salvage it to avoid having to respawn (devastating timeloss every time lol)

not to my recollection! honestly that feels like a huge win, the game is hard as nails so any tools that i can get i’ll take

I watched @BustedAstromech play this game and it was just a joy to figure out how literally anything works

I haven’t had much time to play games lately except to do quick run throughs on the weekly leaderboard challenges in Nintendo World Championship, but I didn’t have a bit of downtime recently and I now have As or higher on all the challenges except 2, 8-1 in Lost Levels and some multipart full Kirby stage. I had never played any Kirby before this and I’m so bad at it!

Been super irritated at how stingy Assassin’s Creed Mirage is with some of its special currency, and just money in general. You can scrounge plenty, but there’s this whole side economy of like, little special tokens that will make people risk their lives to distract guards for you (it’s not explained what value they have other than “those who know, know it’s value,” so I gotta assume these are the 861 AD Baghdad version of those teal plastic coins that were good for a dip cone or Dilly Bar from Dairy Queen).

Anyway, as it turns out, the mechanic I’ve ignored almost the entire game other than when I need to use it was the key - pickpocketing. Every goddamn person in Baghdad is running around with these things. And rubies and other shit.

Now I gotta try to remember where I fought my way through tons of soldiers only to find a chest that needs one of these things to open it.

Dark Souls REMASTERED just long enough to find I needed to activate Steam Input to get the DualSense to work, and then to install this mod

to replace the Xbox button icons with PS ones. ^ _^

I really wish there was a way to make all steam input games give me PS icons.

I watched hellojed play ChoroQ and while largely charming it did immediately force him to drive the shittiest possible car UNDERWATER OVER CORAL REEFS and, dogg, I am no car mechanic but that did not feel like what we did there was good for the car re: the fish and the salt water and the plankton and such:

It does seem like perhaps this game becomes amazing later on because I’m seeing signs that you can pilot a dang propeller plane

that game’s progression was rough to say the least. I might dip back in eventually but, woof.

I’ve been playing a lot, maybe too much…I’ve got four games in rotation

Dark Souls II
I started this because of the thread. I’ve never beaten a souls game. Judging by how far I’ve gotten and how much more there is left, I doubt that this entry is going to change that. Still, I’m having a much more relaxing time playing this than I have with other FromSofts. I’m seeing more of the humor in it. I played today and found the first player scribble to lie to me. I died and thought, “thank you for that experience.” It feels like so many avenues are open to me.

Nier: Automata
I started this way back in June or something. I just finished ending A. Something about this is failing to connect with me the way that Nier did. I shouldn’t expect the same experience or feelings to come. I am enjoying some parts a lot, but there are other sections that feel hollow. Very little has wowed me the way that Facade did. I ought to restrain myself from comparisons. I really like the guy who keeps his human leg.

UFO 50
That’s right, I’m still playing it! I have now trophied 11 games, and I’ve gotten a cherry in 1. I’m shuffling through whichever is least played, so I can give things more of a fair chance. I really thought I’d win Planet Zoldath the other night, but it didn’t happen. I’m this close to beating a couple other games but I don’t wanna push it. I’d rather just take my time and keep it loose.

Raw Danger
This is so good. I just finished the Josh storyline and now I’m playing as a murder suspect. I couldn’t believe I got to ride a jetski at one point. I couldn’t believe that I was able to encourage a ringmaster to restart his circus after he gets rescued. I couldn’t believe I had the option to tell a woman that she should tell her dying stepmom that she hates her. There is so much that I could not believe.

If you ever dare to draw a cartoon vehicle again, I formally request a doodle of your canine character driving the shitbox ChoroQ starter vehicle out of or through the fish-infested sea

Tom Walker, the guy who is doing those hysterical GTA4 videos of playing with the cars at 999% speed, has a couple of earlier videos of him playing the monkey game, and they are a treasure
