All I know is I can play Hexen 64 on a quarter sized co-op screen, a game that has a single texture they use for the walls and floor, and feel fine. But I can’t play the new dang resident evil

i usually don’t mind motion blur but when FFXVI launched it had incredibly noticeable, distracting amounts of motion blur that made me feel sick

camera panning doesn’t look great to me at all but very high framerates so I generally like a very small amount of motion blur

I tend to look around the frame and get really pinpoint focused in games and if the area I want to focus on is out of focus for artistic reason I get a moment of eyestrain before consciously adjusting my focus. Motion blur doesn’t usually fall into this category but sometimes the camera moves while Im focused on a object and I feel the blur make my eyes mad.
I dont mind blur from things moving relative to the pov but camera movent blur across fixed objects can be annoying. I think my eyes jump when Im switching focus rather than smoothly wooshing.

There is some sort of camera/eye control fight going on I dont entirely understand. All of the above could prove to be wrong under testing. I dont know why I notice when I notice and dont when I dont.

when will they make a game with miami vice motion blur

I think per-object motion blur is fine but making the whole screen blur is overkill and should be avoided at all costs.

I got Supermassive’s ‘The Quarry’ on sale & im usually pro or indifferent to motion blur but it alternates between fixed cameras and an above-the-hip third person and the third person in particular has motion blur & shallow focus maxed out to a very distracting degree.
Some potential reasons for the effect I thought of while being deeply distracted by it: keeps attention on their heavily detailed character models/modeled interactive objects, allows for more expansive spaces in lower fidelity, maintains horror effect of vague figures shifting in peripheral vision, unconsciously encourages player to move in a more tank-esque way to minimize blur, etc. All cool excuses for an effect that primarily inspired me to think of excuses for its existence

it’s amazing how miegakure has taken so long to come out that all my interest in the idea of a 4d puzzle game has curdled into pure disdain

Were these four pencil necked geeks spending an average of $125 per meal, did I do that math right, what the fuck were they eating, in 2012 my idea of a fancy treat was going to IKEA on Fridays for the $2 fish & chips special, I was very fortunate to have a nearby IKEA but not as fortunate as these dweebs, does their catering include drink and drugs at least, I’m guessing no, it is so hard to imagine these people actually enjoying things, I promise you if I had that much money I’d at least have some fun, fuck

went back to elden ring multiplayer after a friend came over and showed me how to activate hdr on my tv. it’s still very active around level 40, got summoned all over the place. ran into 2 different sleep builds with awful pun names (Mel O’Tonin and Kat N’ap) and saw a part of stormveil i had never seen before despite spending 10s of hours doing pvp there in the past, the part with the banished knight with the version of the armor that has a cape. that was part of a 45 minute co-op session where we fought off 2 invaders and wound around the place killing literally every enemy, unfortunately i died shamefully to the 3rd invader who popped in after i was out of estus. did a good job fighting him for a while, sticking to ranged attacks and consumables, but got greedy and went in for a flame strike to finish him off and got clipped by the final frames of a greatsword r1. should have hung back and kept throwing shit at him. alas

anyway the game looks great with hdr enabled, i highly recommend switching it on

i also beat bloodborne NG while that friend was over, will probably type up some notes about it tomorrow

edit: fuckkk i went back to that area on my character and the banished knight armor (altered) dropped off that night the first time i killed it, i wonder if that’s a guaranteed drop or if i got insanely lucky

edit 2: actually the armor is boring, the special thing he drops is the hat with the shawl, i couldn’t help myself but grind it and it dropped on the 3rd try

been playing msx1 games again. for as great as the msx2 is just on the sheer virtue of having two metal gear games on it, i find myself loving this little underpowered fucker a little more. this computer had a port of ninja jajamaru that’s really cool and (mostly) runs better than the nes version.

but what’s really important is LOOK AT THIS FROG.

there was also a port of the original ninja-kun that’s really nice despite the obvious visual downgrade

realizing that i’m sick and twisted like harley quinn’s boyfriend and thinking that a visually compromised port of the fairyland story actually looks better than the arcade game. i don’t like the colors in that one.

Still dance dance revolutioning my way to decent shape!

In the meantime, started playing loretta. I like it a lot, it does really interesting things that is making me appreesh games as a medium (again). Like there are these janky little mini games that, I think, is a good way for narrative focused games to incorporate gaminess into their structure. The point isn’t necessarily to do well at them, but they work as mechanical metaphors to help the player better understand Loretta’s interior thoughts. Even though depressed forties/fifties housewife is well trodden territory, the feeling of agency it gives you (thru Loretta) makes it interesting. Idk anything about the developers, but it seems to be a small team which like duh I really appreciate. Not to mention, it looks real good. There’s Hopper and Wyeth all over the place which is, I guess, kinda a given with the subject matter. It’s 10 bucks! Give it a whirl on a rainy day

Arkanoid: Eternal Battle (PC/Steam)

F2P version (from discount elysium (deals thread 2) - #437 by Grandpa ).

Was surprised couldn’t just play with keyboard.

It’s trying the Tetris 99 approach or whatever, showing you how you’re doing relative to other simultaneous players.

02_waiting

There was one other player and they seemed to drop as soon as actual play started after the initial wait for players, so it was me against 24 or so AIs.

03_flypast

They sure throw in as many graphics FX as they could think of to distract you from being bored.

04_fruit

It just kept going so I quit.

05_main_men

The full version, with 1P modes or something, is on sale for a couple bucks I guess, can’t say I’m tempted, it’s Arkanoid with more eye-ache and no control options apparently.

Oh yeah also the game made my computer’s fan go real noisy constantly; only other game I get that with is Pinball FX. : P
