Games You Played Today VIII: Journey of the Cursed Poster

No fail state! But you can get hopelessly lost in a first-person maze sequence.

Mmmm… three separate controller inputs for skipping dialogue is a bit much, Dragon Quest XI.

I am on the boat now and having a grand time!

Demons Souls Remake sucks but it is still Demons Souls so it’s like a 9 out of 10.

Only this playthrough did I put together how often you get firebombed or hit with a flaming sword in 1-1. Like the game is…trying…to…tell…me…something…

While it keeps feeling lovely, Earthbound is also a big time sink and there is a lot of grinding, the battles aren’t very fun (they are simplistic compared to other jrpg’s), and I feel a sense of boredom and emptiness when playing it for medium-long sessions (one hour or more).
I don’t know what to say. There is a lot to love but, for today’s standard of what a game is, it’s also a bit of a drag. I am not sure if I will finish this.

you might not have the volume up high enough

i wouldn’t feel bad at all hacking your save to give yourself lvl 99 ness if it means you just get to see the non-battle parts

the back half of the game is really special

mother 3 directly addresses these complaints well if you want to move on

i get a bit gobsmacked by this sentiment sometimes because today’s standard of what a game is is absolute dogshit

I’m not sure what you mean by grindy. EB is, after some short initial humps, very much one of those post-FF4 RPGs where you will naturally be at a reasonable level if you simply engage in the fights the game presents you.

i played several hours of phantasy star ii yesterday and the day before and i can’t get into it, tho i can respect the brutality of it. it feels like an extra harsh dq but with less likeable npc writing and character design that doesn’t hit me as effectively (ps characters don’t do much for me until we get to pso and everything looks cool). also the music, unlike in 4, is mostly nothing to me. i get like, mildly annoyed every encounter fade-in, and then i hit the autobattle and watch every slow trade of hits until i need to interrupt things to go through an annoying menu to change tactics. this type of menuing never works for me. autobattle is fine but i don’t like burying regular commands like this.

phantasy star 1 is a lot more fun and i gotta ask how come only the first game understands that making the protag a girl is objectively a great idea?

also i’ve been playing a past years vncup entry, precious theatre. it’s specifically a pilot episode

i’m pacing myself playing it, doing something like a chapter a day. all the visuals are 3d renders, occasionally with animation and full on fmv’s. it looks sick!

the writing sometimes feels really manic in a good way. characters just kinda go off on their own tangents, going off about their obsessions. it’s partially dressed in anime magical girl stuff. there’s a vr world where you die for real. the school is obviously cultish and is not subtle about it. i think it’s fun. and cute! and occasionally unsettling. but very cute!

Finished up the first special edition monkey island. The new art looks good, but the animation is kind of bad. Background animation is smooth and the sprites animate at a terrible framerate. It worked in Hollow Knight but not as well here. The gag where someone tells Guybrush “walk this way” and when Guybrush follows them his walk cycle has been changed to mimic the character he is following has been removed entirely from the newer edition :frowning:

It’s really pretty in screenshots though, and the music is great

Bigger crime than anything Lucas did to Star Wars

Yeah, it depends on the angle. To me the standard of what a good game is today is high. Elden ring is a good (great) game, Resi 7 is a good game. I think the bar has risen. Obviously there is also a lot of noise, most likely more than before. And lots of unremarkable (even if not offending) stuff.

Thanks for the advice. I have a savegame made in retroarch, i might consider to do that.
Do you have a link? I did a quick google search but ai did not find anything (only posts of people who grinded a lot)…

Also the advice to crank the volume up would be good, the sound track is fantastic. I have read on hg101 the reasons for which it is so.

fwiw Earthbounds first couple hours (when ness is solo) are about as tough or grindy as it gets and then it evens out until close to the end (with some difficult bits, but in typical RPG fashion you eventually have more money than god and can buy your way out of most problems)

That said it has some neat mechanical ideas but otherwise doesn’t evolve much beyond “dragon quest with fun sprinkles on top” if youre just not enjoying that you can probably get the gist from browsing a lets play while listening to the soundtrack. Like it’s one of my favorite games ever, but dragon quest with sprinkles is enough to sustain a whole game for me

Yeah there is something kind of demoralizing about role playing a small child getting repeatedly annihilated by like rats and snakes. But… It’s part of The Experience

rats could annihilate any child if they wanted to

after fighting your way up from snakes and crows, to local gangs, to psychic ants, to corrupt cops, you do feel a little more grown up by the time you get to leave onett lol

i also do not think it’s a coincidence that the difficulty spikes in the game correspond to temporarily losing party members or being left to travel solo. it should suck to lose your friends!!
