That makes sense, yeah. Need to check out one of the spikeout games which i somehow managed to not play all these years. Think it’s a really funny/cool design decision to repurpose the daytona usa speedometer as a combo meter
there’s something to be written finger on nose about legends sharing a control scheme with armored core and the way it characterizes the robot player character. the vibe is compounded for me with megaman’s cute squishy springy footstep sound (makes him sound heavy but in a cute way!) as compared to armored core’s similar mech footstep donk donk donk sound. i wonder if this was intentional on legends’s part or just, like you said, early 3D wild west (I think you’re likely right but I dream)
either way one of my favorite control schemes ever, really hits its stride once you get the skates in my opinion, I do think the game would lose something without it for sure
gods i love legends i’m blushing rn thinking of it
mfw i remember all the essays written about RE tank controls over the years (though I consider RE tank a very different tank beast)
I’ve distanced myself from videogames enough for everything to be new again
maybe now I can experience true love
Played “Spot which one of these eBay listings is the bootleg cart.” = P
Hadn’t looked at a GBA cart since I sold my collection four years ago so was a little rusty. : P
i wont be participating in this challenge because i realized the game is literally right in front of me as i was looking at them closely
I think it’s worth noting that during this era, and specifically whilst developing and publishing games for the Playstation, Capcom almost exclusively utilised car/tank/vehicle controls in 3D adventure games. And perhaps more telling, the company was more interested in classic 2D sidescrolling affairs (Megaman 8, Strider 2), arcade ports, and VN/graphical adventure games (Startling Adventures) alongside their usual fighting game efforts. Whatever the reason, they clearly designed the game with those controls in mind and with real intention - and I’d encourage skeptics to give them a fair shake before lamenting the lack of dual stick controls.
Hm but that looks like the-- Er. Anyway I now know that if it’s the real one you can definitely sell it for a lot of money! ;_;
IT LOOKS LIKE YOU CHECKED THE BAG
the one that says “official nintendo seal of quality” is the real one not “official nintendo seal” unless we have a fake one too!
Wait what does yours say? = oo
official nintendo seal of quality
Oh okay whew. = D The blur somehow made it look more like the other one. = o
Also if you look real closely the “GAME BOY Advance” logo at the top has a slightly different font than the real one.
the easiest tell for me that the top cart is the real one is the embossed numbers above the nintendo seal (although I have no idea what they mean, or how common they are)
Good spot! Apparently that’s a big thing: 6 Ways To Spot A Fake GBA Game – The Avalanche Rebels
On every official cartridge (except some special carts, like Yoshi’s Topsy-Turvy), a two digit number is mechanically pressed into the paper. This number is usually only visible in the correct lighting, or if it’s an old cart that’s collected enough dirt over the years to fill the indentation. Bootleg games almost never have this number, and even when they do, it’s printed in ink rather than pressed.
Yeah, that embossed GBA logo that was the first main thing that jumped out to me. What was weird and what made me feel like I was going crazy for a moment earlier here was that when I googled for “gba cart” or something to find pictures to double-check against, the first two clear Google Image hits had that same narrow, rounded logo font–I had to click through their links to find that they were advertised “reproduction” cart cases on I think it was Etsy and Amazon! Sheesh, Google. : P
Just finished Metro Exodus. One of my favorite modern games! The last level is incredible. I have extremely few complaints with this game. It gets better as it goes on. Going to have to go back and take a deeper look at the earlier Metro and STALKER games soon…
Yeah I honestly like this better than a typical 3rd person control setup, one where you have your thumb on the right stick basically constantly to re-adjust. The game defaults to having left and right strafe, and the L1/R1 to turn, with the R2 as a targeting trigger.
Chiki’s Chase is a little auto runner with some nice jumping and shooting mechanics and a cute vibe. Nothing revolutionary but I’m having a good time.
Also I finally caved and realized that yet again I’ve gotten 3/4 of the way through a modern Pokemon game (Scarlet) and run out of enthusiasm. So I watched a let’s play of the last bit of the game. Which seemed pretty cool! But I’m glad I could just skim through it on YouTube. And now to swear off the series until they make a Team Rocket game, only to get sucked in by the next mainline series game’s hype machine and play another 3/4 of it.
I remember playing through Mega Man Legends some years back when it got released on the Playstation Store and I definitely enjoyed the experience in spite of the controls rater than because of them. Most of the time they are just kinda awkward but livable but every so often the game asks something tricky of you and it becomes a battle with said controls as much as the actual challenge itself. It’s definitely still worth giving a shot, but while the controls are definitely unique… there’s a reason not even Legends 2 used them once the dual analog controller became available.
