Games You Played Today VI (III in the west)

SWTOR is the only game with developers brave enough to ask “Do you want to spend 5 more hours on Hoth wandering around killing hundreds of trash mobs?” and framing it like you won a prize or something. I didn’t even mention in my post that every dungeon has a terminal you interact with that gives you a moral choice that usually boils down to [Murder random NPCs who are inconsequential to the dungeon] or [Do nothing]

Fucked around and got PSX emulation working so I could play R4: Ridge Racer 4: Type 4: The Fourth One. It still owns bones. The soundtrack is still good. The car designs are still the best. The environments evoke a feeling that AAA games of today just straight up can’t. Several times the races came down to the final stretch, and so many games just let you restart a level and try again, so you have a real reason to race till the last lap and squeeze as much as you can out of the car. The handling either sucks or it’s the best feeling ever.

looks like I’m completely Stuck In on destiny 2 and it’s all ben’s fault. this game was like the first damn thing he ever brought up when we met in person at sbmeetup I, so I hope he’s finally happy. I don’t know I was just messing with the thing then while I was in a fight switching from one bungie nerf gun to another something just clicked in my head with the game.

it’s fine, the whole reason I originally started playing ffxiv actually was to have something to distract me while I chewed on nothing but grass leaves for sustenance and saved money to buy the world’s most perfect handgun, a staccato p. now I just need to do that again since I found a ls3 engine for the nova. last time a pandemic happened to break out and I got economically stimulated though.

this is also bar none the worst game I’ve ever played for explaining anything in it you can do or what is going on

Metroid Prime Remastered got me to hook up USB Installer GX on the Wii and start playing the GC version and damn it’s still a great one. Maybe the best kinda game to not touch for 16+ years and come back to as the touch of the designer’s hand has faded from memory mostly and thinking about some of the N64 Sucks discussion about when you’ve “solved” a Zelda I think the same applies to Prime somewhat except it’s way more confident in itself and the player than any 3D Zelda up to BotW (got about 8 hours into that one before I lost interest (then I sold my gifted Switch Lite to afford PS2 stuff…))

Art direction and music still bangs, I mean it has shades of late Nintendoisms, some of the bosses are doofy, but foregoes a lot of the more cloying qualities of the brand. Was afraid I’d find the controls annoying but no, they are wonderful, this is a space detective adventure game not Quake or Halo (god, remember some of the absolutely stupid opinions about that back in the day lol)

only gripe rn is that rumble seems a little gratuitous, feels like I’m taking damage when I blow up a loot box like 30 feet away but it’s also optional

Been playing a little simplified dungeon-crawler called Grim Tides on my phone. It’s an alright time, I’m enjoying the writing well enough to keep on the grind. The dev is super upfront about what the microtransactions get you although there is one potentially brutal thing – items don’t persist if you’re playing a permadeath character so you could potentially buy an item pack and then actually lose it forever if your character dies. The dev seems open to working with people if they wind up unhappy via this scenario but it does seem like a big headache for all involved.

It’s another good game to play while the baby is sleeping in my arms.

All alone for 4 days for the first time since XXX days so I’m getting the big gamer hat and playing Nioh 2

Can’t believe they added even more numbers to Nioh… Everybody said that the one problem with the first game was too many numbers and they just added even more. At this point it feels like playing an incremental game trying to decode which info is important and which is insignificant

Some of the biggest cognitive dissonance in gaming as I explore a burning village and open a chest that bursts into a loot pinata and a ghost implores the pillagers to spare her child (corpse of the child is next to her corpse) and I pet a cute mascot cat than then head bonks into enemies to deal minuscule damage.

Anyway Soulslike still rule forever I’m afraid. It took me like 5 hours to get used to the game in the first mission and I loved all of them. Last time I got cute and mostly used the spinning sickle + ninja skills so this time I’m just using the Odachi (= big sword) but who knows. I remember respeccing every hour in lategame Nioh

i stand by nioh 2 being actually good because it went all in on the numbers (and gave you a character creator)

Had to pause Fatal Frame 3: The Tormented for ten minutes to think about the amount of work it must have taken for this single woman to turn the ‘spare kitchen’ in her apartment into a fully functioning photo dark room.

I finally booted up Ninja JaJaMaru-kun: The Great Yokai Battle + Hell and I had no idea how fantastic this game’s soundtrack was. A great mix of hip hop, funk, and Super Sweepy electronica. This is the main menu theme.

I got bored and installed a bunch of Steam Next Fest demo bit based on the very good criteria of “fuck it, play something”

Dungeon Drafters - this is a turn-based, tile-movement class/deck builder dungeon crawler? it seems perfectly fine, if not clunky. give this game a fast forward button

Atomic Picnic - it’s one of those Survivor games except it’s a third person shooter, so now instead of becoming a roaming circle of death that’s focused totally on movement, you instead spend the whole time doing the Serious Sam backpedal and the addition of a grappling hook-esque multi-jump/dash mechanic doesn’t change the fact that you spend a lot of time running away and not feeling like you’re getting the huge power spikes you should but also it’s literally pre-alpha so maybe the idea works

Star Hearts: Launch Point - at first I thought this was going to like, a VR training/Meat Boy thing where you would do a bunch of precision platforming but then it turns out there’s even more game and it’s a neat little “hey you like Ninja Gaiden/Kabuki Quantum Fighter” and then you kill the first boss and you get a grappling hook and at that point I had to declare the game Good

Grim Guardians: Demon Purge - okay, I get it, Inticreates likes making Castlevanias. it’s a level based CV that looks like SOTN and has the PoR partner thing. also it’s set in the GalGun universe but isn’t horny. it’s a good one of these games. CV, not GalGun.

ArcRunner - finally a game that combines synthwave, neon-filled city streets, shooting and roguelikes

Spiritfall - okay so it’s another roguelike but this one is arenas and it plays like Smash but with an 8-way dash instead of a shield/dodge. it’s good and a lot better than any other attempt to take the platform fighter gameplay and transpose it to some kind of singleplayer thing (looking at you Abyss Odyssey)

Ghostly Moans - I have downloaded a demo for a pornographic RPG Maker game. it is a pornographic RPG Maker game. losing in battle did not give me pictures of the heroine being forcibly sexed, but a game over. this reads like a grave misunderstanding of the target market. 0/10.

Protodroid DeLTA - this is an okay 3D Mega Man X kinda thing and it feels okay to play but mostly holy shit all the characters are brown women I’m fucking feasting good today, god bless

Fun fact I never played this game

The first couple of rooms are difficult because I think I’m so used to gunning people down, i tried to get the rifle the first few guards have but there’s no option to pick it up. I’m finding the UI and presentation neat, buuuut the endless vent crawling and getting a comm’s call every 10 seconds where somebody explains how an elevator works are starting to grate on me. There was like a 30 explanation for how the key card system works in fiction.

The action so far is…good I think? I am spending way too much time looking at the radar and not the game itself, maybe it’ll disable that at some point and I have to get on by my wits. I find the top down camera to be a little limiting. You have two speeds: running and crawling. I thought the guard finding my footprints was really clever.

I’m finding the way they do shot blocking and animating faces, despite a lack of facial animation tech, to be pretty good. This game had a male gaze shot for no reason at one point. I feel like it kind of ruins the entire mood. I guess I’ll see how weird this gets. MGS as a series has been a big glaring game series I never played, so I’m eager to see what this is about.

I think it’s helpful to think of Metal Gear more as a rudimentary adventure game with stealth padding than any kind of military action game

I’ve started Yurukill. It runs like absolute shit on PS4 which is incredible for a visual novel. Like straight up 20 second load times and any time there is an animation change it freezes for a second. I somewhat suspect because this extends the game supposedly brief run time. But if I had to guess the game has 6 chapters and it took me just under 3 hours to finish number 1.

The game took a disgusting long time to establish the game and the rules that were described in a sentence in the promotional stuff.

The short version is you play a guy convicted of a crime (did he do it will he find out who actually did it?) and has been rotting in prison for years. He wakes up in a twisted evil theme park and is partnered with a victim of the horrible crime he maybe didn’t do. They have to solve puzzles and then play a STG (by G.Rev of all studios.)

The victim can choose to kill him at any time meanwhile there are 4 other similar teams and an annoying/charismatic TV show-style host lady (whos VA is really doing an incredible/annoying job.)

I was pretty antsy by the end of tonight waiting for the talking to stop so I could play the shooter for another 30 seconds. Just how much it took from Dangan Ronpa is a LOL where at the end of the stage I have to restate everything that has been said 50 times as a final point. The writing/characters aren’t giving me enough but it is a visual novel murder game game that I bought at release and is right now completely worthless to get rid of.

Yeah, now having played Dang Old Grandpa, it definitely borrows liberally there.

It’s definitely a better game for its brevity, and the VA of that host does some hilarious work. Some of the chapters are more interesting than others though the main character is pretty full, but you get to be a different MC in most of the chapters.

It sounds like it actually runs worse on the PS4 somehow than the switch, which wtf.

The good news for GRev is you can just play the shooter on its own after you beat the game, and each chapter in the game unlocks the shooter for that. It’s a pretty decent little shooter, but nothing outstanding. Does make me wonder what GRev is doing otherwise.

it does ruin the mood, and it gets so much worse

mgs2 is the least compulsory about it but they all screech to a halt to leer and stick an elbow to your rib
