Their more contemporary environmental puzzle game, Obduction, ranks among my favs and really takes the idea of nested worlds to some weird places. Also just enough 90s style FMV to feel very out of place for a modern game. I’d definitely recommend it

i’m thinking about jack lupino in max payne just listing off major demons from several cultures because he’s a dumb nerd killing people to try and evoke SMT demons to get off or something

I played he first act of MP2 and I am glad that it didn’t stop trying to be corny. the NPCs in the apartment complex got a big smile out of me. this game just feels tighter to play than the first one, bullets move faster and killing guys actually takes a reasonable number of them. I think it’s cool that Mona finally gets on screen action and has Murderer Girl Power. Max really did just start the game saying “I hate when GIRLS die”

i tried using d3d8to9 since the game wasnt using my GPU but it made it stutter horribly and running it in different compatibility modes didn’t help so I guess running it with integrated graphics is fine, the game works on toasters anyway

I replayed the first two MPs recently and I think I ended up using DGVoodoo to run them

thanks!

Myst 3 is the worst one unfortunately but still a fun enough puzzle game on its own merits- but playing the full series through is extremely rewarding and I’d recommend it to anybody. I don’t think any of the later games ever quite match the Demon’s+Dark twin pillars of the first two but the idea of a beautiful game taking deadly seriously the inherently nerdy idea of writing words bestows Actual Power never stops paying your curiosity dividends. Capping off with Uru whose ultimate fate is tragic but is really one of the most interesting game concepts ever attempted.

And then yeah, play Obduction too, it’s great

Have always loved that vengeance cop Max’s iconic weapon is akimbo Beretta 92s while mercenary assassin Mona’s is a Desert Eagle

I have no internal association to any of these guns other than the desert eagle being the “bad IDF gun” even though they’re all military murder weapons so I really don’t know why that association stuck with me, probably too many counter strike conversations

I try to use a single beretta as much as possible because it just feels the most “correct” but will use whatever is most appropriate for groups

O M G if you’re playing any Max Payne game without a gun in each hand I don’t even know where to start with you!!

Had heard good things about Obduction, gonna probably binge the rest of Myst too while I’m at it. Heard Rhem was worth checking out too although I know it’s more pure puzzle.

Thanks to Receiver 2 for me the Desert Eagle will forever be “that one with all the jokes”.

I’m iffy on Obduction. None of the worlds measured up to the one you start in, it’s much less clear than Myst why the thing you do to get a good ending will do good before you do it, you have to do specific puzzles to advance the plot near the end and it is super poorly communicated, and yeah, Cyan, I get that people were super enthusiastic about the numbering system in Riven, but that one was delightfully elegant and the one you cooked up for Obduction is a real pain in the neck. Also you can really feel it was a crowdfunded game, with all the classic Myst and Zork pandering. On the other hand the world-swapping mechanic and what it eventually builds to in terms of puzzles is really great.

I can vouch for the Rhem games, they’re really great although really oldschool looking. Two things to note though: I forget what the shortcut is but in the SE versions there’s a colorpicker for colorblind players (that’ll actually give you the color’s name, no just RGB values), which is a real boon, and also the games are super crash-prone, apparently due to bad multicore support in Director, which can be a bit grating so save often.

I finished Tunic on friday, with the hard-to-get ending. I’m really amazed by how fulled it morphed into a Fez successor by the end. But also yeah, the secrets are much better balanced and easier to solve than Fez in the regular game flow (as opposed to the secret-secret ones you need for the final easter egg) and I think pacing-wise it really benefits from holding the reveal of the local anticube equivalents until the final act.

And then that moment where I understood what the game was asking of me to get to the end, broke out pencil and paper and starting leafing through the manual like mad and running all over the place to gather the final bits and pieces needed for the ending was such a gaming high. Both Fez and The Witness lacked that kind of final meta-puzzle and it really is the game’s highlight.

Was tempted to link an old thread I made where I scanned in all my notebook pages after completing the whole Myst series but I think it was on SB1?

Sadly the camera feature in the new one makes physical note taking less necessary. Still fun to carve out your own maps and theories though.

PGA Tour 2K21 sucks because it’s difficult but sterile. gimme messy stupid golf that’s either Arcade Hard or Just Fun Dumb Shit. This “trying to be real golf” thing is pointless. Easy Golf on Xbox Live Indie Games was better. Uninstalling.

Everybody’s Golf/Hot Shots Golf remains the only true modern-day inheritor of the mantle of the many cool golf games of yore.

(IIRC there’s a nice indie 2D golf game on the Switch too that I haven’t gotten around to playing.)

Started playing Necrobarista on the Steam Deck, then restarted it on my Mac to free up the Steam Deck for Vampire Survivors but incredibly found an instance where “old bastard” was censored to “old nuisance” for Apple Arcade. what kind of fucken 4kids bullshit

I’m just imagining the enigmatic ‘refused store approval’ message they would have added and the frantic week spent tracking it down.

boy I’m glad I don’t have to work with Apple anymore

a later instance said “shooty shooty [proper noun]” which I’m assuming is shitty so I’m restarting this again; I cannot imagine a game about a psychopomp barista that doesn’t curse
