finished the Splatoon 3 campaign, I thought it was good but I didn’t like it as much as Octo Expansion - that was always going to be a hard one to follow, really

and of course the rest of the game has so much for me to continue playing!

yeah i was wrong this game rules, it’s making me feel like a flatlander seeing a 3d person for the first time. too much to comprehend but also extremely intuitive in a way that i can’t verbalize.

it feels like someone dropped Devil Daggers onto a planet with no video games and they spent 50 years iterating on the one video game, then sent it back.

EDIT friend me on steam so you can beat my high scores:

I’m sitting at 49.5 currently! I think I got up to around 55 but really fumbled it before I finally died of embarrassment.

I still like Hyper Demon but I am completely hopeless at it. The final tutorial requires you get reach a score of 25, and that’s just not happening for me. I’m not sure I’ve ever broken 10. Still worth the experience, though.

i assume that like devil daggers @ 500 seconds there is a certain score threshold for the single achievement which is basically like the only hard goal in the game

the steam description says there’s an ending of some sort. hmm!

i definitely struggled with it before i understood how important the time component is, and even then it took me a bit. you want to run directly at the towers, shoot for a little bit and then do a shotgun shot. if you kill them before they spew any enemies you get 9 points per tower. if you spend any time distracted by small skulls you’re probably losing points. you can still shoot at the big skulls (again shotgun is easiest and they give 3 points) and just strafe in a way that the small skulls miss you. the game wants you to be extremely aggressive. dash in close to each tower as it spawns and kill it as fast as possible.

edit: the other trick is that holding right click to pick up gems can let you one shot kill towers with lasers, as long as you hit the big gem in the center of them. my best score in the main game does this a lot – it’s a very efficient way to kill towers, but can slow you down in the tutorial if you’re focusing on it too much.

i’m up to 55 now – getting better at those triple enemies that you stun. kept getting 3+ lasers, ricocheting them to hit all 3, and then chaining dashes into them. also dashing through towers!

this game is awesome. double jump dashing into the spawners is fun.

fucked up that billy hatcher is way better than sonic heroes. like they stumbled on katamari’s core thing and just wed it to a nonsensical idea of how eggs work and grating sound design

heroes suffers so much for its slippery handling i’m going to armchair diagnose as renderman

Thimbleweed’s scars are still too deep for me to forget, so I still can’t say that Return to Monkey Island isn’t going to sour the whole experience on the way out.

But with that in mind, I did want to put into text, so that I can preserve my current feelings at 8 hours in and in Chapter IV, that I am loving Return to Monkey Island and I am so happy that Gilbert and Grossman were allowed to make it. They both picked up exactly where Monkey 2 left off, and also came into it with 30 years of growth.

What went wrong with Thimbleweed Park? I thought to play it, but if it doesn’t hold up I can well save the hours

Thimbleweed has 2-3 good jokes, 2-3 good puzzles, but all of it is poisoned by an extreme cynicism present in the game from the start but which intensifies to a toxic level by the ending. The ending of the game is so bad that it basically taunts the player for ever thinking they should have cared about the story or characters of the game.

I started it a few years ago, was about at 30% but I felt it was a bit boring. I was considering to restart it.

I am about halfway through Guardians of the Galaxy. The writing remains impressive. I love the chance to escalate an argument among friends. It is just these 5 friends/family constantly getting on each others nerves. Which means the moments where it Joss Whedon’s all the more wooden. “Oh you artifically inserted a joke there.” When the joke should always be these dingdongs can barely stand but need each other.

It is also way too long as each Chapter is an hour long and…much like episodic TV that it is hitting each beat at the same pace is getting to me.

Also the combat is really just mush.

And nice to play a story that is just failing into an interest situation.

Interesting how much Shadows of the Tomb Raider and this game cover the same themes. I also praised that the writing in that game was way better than it needed to be.

Part 4 to my taste is dragging too much. There is nothing you can do without a blocker in the middle (and another blocker in the middle of that one, and so on). It feels like corporate work.

To my taste the first two parts of the game are the best ones, while the back half is definitely weaker. Let’s see if the ending will have sone spark.
