fyi, there is a patch for Revenge that makes the double-jump mechanic more generous (also gives you slightly more jump height)
is it insane if i prefer shinobi 1987 and shadow dancer on genesis to either of the super shinobi games
i’m not sure about that, but i do prefer mega drive shadow dancer to arcade shadow dancer
this is one of those less-acknowledged regional differences. in the uk, it seemed like if there was a mega drive in the house, a mega games 2 cartridge would manifest at some point. so streets of rage, revenge of shinobi, and golden axe were like universal touchstones of kid culture at that time.
I save scummed through the three MD/Genesis Shinobi games recently and I guess I sort of enjoyed them as exercises in masochism. ^ _^
As a younger person, between the 6-pak cartridge, sega smash pack on the dreamcast, and the mid-2000’s plug & play genesis, I sure did get a whole lot of sonic 1, golden axe, revenge of shinobi, and columns.
got that 6 in 1 megacd thing where golden axe has the arcade ost off the disc and streets of rage / revenge of shinobi have uncompressed sound effects pretty late, maybe 95 even and caught up on all those games
really good
definitely not - those games are something entirely different imo. much more chill games that are all about vibes. also, figuring out how to clear a level without shurikens feels more like a puzzle.
that said, i like both varieties.
hmm, yeah, quite possibly! i feel like Golden Axe and Altered Beast were the main early games i saw on a Genesis, eventually followed up by Sonic 1.
never came across Streets of Rage, unfortunately, until 2, because my half-sister took it from her boyfriend to give to me.
i was somehow unaware of the multigame carts, though i kind of vaguely remember them, now. i think, also, only one of my friends was a Sega Genesis friend, and most of the time we spent playing was focused on Mortal Kombat or Sonic. he eventually got a SNES in high school because one of our friend groups was just super into RPGs
not to be a hater but this feels like the worst way to experience these games. i feel like the constant death and reload thing really kills what makes getting good at these games enjoyable.
back in my day, you bought a game genie and then used an invincibility code and then never died
this is neat and probably necessary, but i’m gonna say it’s sacriligeous
i think my attitude with hard/vaguely unfair videogames is that if the programmers could beat it, so can i. i’m not gonna let some late 80s dork get the best of me
I am quite sure there were plenty of games programmers who could not beat their own games
sure but i think one can tell the difference between something that was well constructed and purposely made hard in a way that was challenging and fun to the game designers/programmers vs. stuff that is meant to eat quarters, was rushed out the door, etc.
like even though The Revenge of Shinobi is really tough, i can see the exact placement of things was done in such a way to piss me off and for them to laugh at me until i figure it out
i think for me i just literally never think the game designers “know better”, really. i am capable of making design decisions myself, and few designers earn the trust that i’ll just let them do whatever they want and i’ll never object, i won’t change a thing.
like, i love defaults, i love seeing what a game is doing. but if i see that and then decide, “actually a one or two frame window for a necessary jump mechanic is bullshit and it sucks”, i think that’s super valid. esp. since the jump mechanic in III does, to me, feel more consistent and fair
that said, i do absolutely love “The Experience” and there’s something special about running through precisely the same obstacle course as everyone else is
even the jump mechanic is like. well, if you know it’s “hard” and you can nail it… this has texture in and of itself.
yeah, i mean, don’t confuse my desire to play through the game as originally made for like, a high regard for authorial intent. it’s just that, some child out there beat The Revenge of Shinobi. some guy sitting in an office at 3am beat it. i am also going to do that
i played shadow dancer so much as a kid and even though i think shinobi iii is the better game i just have so much more fun revisiting shadow dancer. i love the dog and the stages and bonus game music and the sfx like when you cast a special move or the little musical sting that plays when you die. all etched in my mind because i played it over and over and over and over and…
nostalgia is a heavy burden that weighs on the vision of my soul…
That soundtrack is hella tight. It’s whatI always think of when SNES fans in the day would tell me that the Genny had inferior sound, and I could never understand what they meant.
yeah, for sure. a bad Genesis soundtrack feels like someone cleaning your ears with a drill, but a bad SNES soundtrack sounds like someone farting inside your ears
I’ll take the farts
That being said, I do think that TV mono speakers were incredibly unkind to Genesis music in a way it wasn’t to SNES soundtracks
Impressions of Nine Sols so far:
- The presentation is just as nice as I’d hoped.
- Seemed like they were doing something other than a horror game this time. No, it’s another horror game. (Not a bad thing.)
- After reaching the first boss, I see that I’m going to have to switch from normal mode to “story” mode. Video games that require timing aren’t my thing and this is too unforgiving. I’m sure that, as with Sekiro, everyone will say that it’s a great experience once you “get it” and can perform parries or whatever but that isn’t happening. (I hope that mode doesn’t remove all danger whatsoever, though, the way SOMA was ruined by its “safe” mode.)
yeah I always thought it was really telling that the genesis had a headphone jack right on it, as if you were meant to be sitting that close to the console, playing on like, a little desk TV
speaking as someone who actually owned a nomad
I dunno, maybe I AM a masochist. ^ _^ Haven’t tried invincibility codes, they sound boring to me. I WAS using an infinite lives cheat, mind you. Oh except in III–couldn’t find one for that. It didn’t matter though 'cause I didn’t want to redo bits so I just ended up scumming all the time. ; D
