Sonic Generations (PC/Steam)

a

The into-the-screen lane-running segments are pretty smooth; all the other game types they try here are prone to clunkiness and feeling like the stages and mechanics needed more smoothing out.

b

The 2D parts of the 3D stages in particular are prone to have similar foreground / background colors, often coupled with a very zoomed-out tiny Sonic: not cozy on the ol’ eyeballs. 8P

It’s really tricky to hire software developers with the right set of skills to make something like the Sega Ages “enhanced emulation” approaches. ROM hacking is pretty far afield from what they teach in school

playing like a dragon ishin and there’s too many sidequests about giving somebody a type of item over and over to fill up some meter

I followed @Gate88 's advice and got 3rd in solo. Playing the game this way is very thrilling but I choked at the end as the adrenaline made me do a very dumb mistake.

Trying to make my brain and hands work in the ways they shouldn’t anymore and get more into shooters…“shmups” if you will (I won’t, I don’t like the sound of that, it sounds like you’re saying a gentle warning of muppets coming down the street)

Been playing a whole bunch of these things for a little bit at a time, and so far, hmmm.

  • I do a little better at horizontal shooters than vertical. Is it because they’re slower? Probably. Maybe it just makes more sense for me to read the stuff coming on screen right to left than top down. G. Darius, Deathsmiles, pretty much all versions of Parodius and I guess maybe Zero Wing apply here.
  • That said, with top down stuff you really do start to see a lot of common patterns, within the same developers but sort of across the genre, too. Memorization of bespoke wave patterns is of course one thing, but getting to the point where you just know the dudes who flew in top left will have a similar set come down top right, and getting there ahead of time and clearing them out before they can show up…that’s good stuff.
  • Really wanna get good at Esp Ra De, that game just looks cool as hell. So far have only really done alright with Shikhondo, as vertical shooters go.

Trying to wrap my head around all these games with weird formations and stuff, on top of just “don’t get hit”…this gonna be my Sudoku for staving off old man brain.

shmups is short for “shoot 'em ups”

but if you say that fast enough it will sound like “shu mups” (?)

maybe this was already obvious (??)

Oh, I know, it just does sound a little like “shh…mups” which then sounds like some sorta Ernest Cline ass slur for Muppets.

It’s also mostly just me being a weirdo and not digging weird gaming shorthand terms. I will never accept folks calling Resident Evil “Resi”…childish sounding…

I am open to adopting and trying to get “shootemer” going.

Word of warning, I heard somewhere that this one is on the stingier side regarding lives and bombs, so maybe don’t have high hopes here.

esp ra de doesn’t have bombs at all! you have a forcefield that’s limited by a meter.

the forcefield turns bullets into points items, and points items are also dropped by most enemies. when you get 200 points items, for a short time, all the points items that appear will instead be items that refill a small amount of your meter. it’s only 200 the first time, it increases by 100 every time after that.

as someone who sucks at shmups, esprade is the best i’ve ever got at one

I’m awful at ESPRade, the enemy bullets are so fast in that game. I seem to be better at literally every other Cave game (usually they go with dense but slow bullet fields instead)
