I have started playing Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father for maybe the fourth or fifth time, after having given up almost immediately during previous attempts. The start of this game is directionless and lame I think and I have finally made it to the second day and things are clicking this time.

Too many mouse action verbs to scroll through and dead end locations.

I played through the first section of the remake, as well, to see if it felt better. Interesting to see how they restructured the sequence of events, and fixed how the mouse verbs work - but missing out on the incredible original animated interrogation portraits, with their amazing lip sync, and the remake’s less funny voice work (I am finding myself loudly repeating almost everything Gabriel says) was enough to abandon it. The backgrounds in the remake look pretty.

I’ve mostly felt the general visuals in the original, at least the stuff I’ve seen so far are a little mushy, a desire for detail straining against the tiny resolution reduced even further by the heavy letterboxing.

It is a game I have always wanted to like a lot more than I actually have, on paper so perfect grizzly horny wannabe detective bookworm loose in suddenly deadly 90s New Orleans brought to you by a post-KQ6 Sierra at the height of their high-budget low-res decadence, but I am glad to be liking it at the moment.

Is the voodoo museum owner voiced by Worf? Update: he do be.

Sins of the Father is a very special game. I think the hot dog vendor/mime/tap dancing boypuzzle is some top tier stupid shit and I love it.

I could not stand the sequel. That dude was not nearly as fuckable as Tim Curry. Fuckin’ sucked.

ck2 finally started properly recognizing two-finger taps on my notebook touchpad as right-clicks

no idea when they patched that but it’s actually pleasant to play on here now!

I finally got around to playing Gorogoa. It’s very good. It reminded me of a little of Windosill.

Be sure to mess around with the retro features.

You can even choose to emulate the Master System’s FM Sound Unit. Also, mash the retro button for a bit for a surprise.

I started playing Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Don’t let the memes about how janky it is fool you, this is quite the labor of love. So much to do, so many fun little silly systems, No Fantasy Elements, a medieval codex to fill out, gorgeous maps. Stuff like this:

Someone described it in ambition as a modern Daggerfall that actually works and that seems alright with me. On top of the cool historical stuff, the story and voice acting in what little I’ve played so far are surprisingly affecting. Apparently one of the original Mafia writers was on it and I always thought that game was way ahead of its time from a storytelling and world building perspective.

Lots of skills to learn, you’re a damn illiterate and books look like this

and much less intelligible til you teach yourself to read better. You’re just a blacksmith’s son, not a badass, can barely swing a sword at the start of the game. Anyways I’m probably too early in to crow so heavily but I’ve been reading and watching about it til I could get my own hands on and I think it’s a real delight. It ain’t gonna win any beauty pageants and you might talk to a peasant woman that’s missing her head texture once in a blue moon but it beats the hell out of an Elder Scrolls snorefest.

the devs on this game are gamergate fools, which made it pretty much a no buy even if it was laser targeted towards me (meticulously over-researched medieval combat sim? I would have been down with that)
