Yeah, its so fruitful to do this even if you have no interest in making art yourself, it humanizes artists in a way. I don’t look at Moebius or Hayao Miyazaki as unique visionaries, but as people deeply curious about the world they inhabit, which is a trait anyone can replicate.

i never thought ac4 was as cool as the ps1 games, but it might be because i never learned how to move like this

Wow I woke up to a bunch of posts. Apologies if my orientalist comment upset anyone. I immediately bristle at any band with a name along those lines. Seems she has more behind it than say Tokyo Police Club or I thinj there is a Japanese band called Oregon Surfers.

Thank you for lots of people sharing their feelings about this.

against my better judgement I started playing the messenger. problematic content notwithstanding, the writing makes me want to jump out the window. as stale as realultimatepower-era nerd humor is, this game is somehow worse.

I’ve seen criticisms of various indie games’ art direction as being ā€œwebcomic-assā€. which is fair, but imo, the webcomic-ass writing of games like the messenger is infinitely more egregious. most of the time I try to adopt a welcoming attitude towards indie game development. everyone should try it! but playing the messenger makes me rethink that. people who think this kind of shit is funny shouldn’t be allowed to create.

I say this every time, The Messenger has the best moment to moment action of any of the hundred modern 2D pixel action games.

i disagree with rudie

It really wore on me how The Messenger reuses enemies the whole game without even palette swapping them. Like any level that calls for a ranged shooter enemy, all you get is one horizontal fireball guy with the same regular shooting pattern from hour 1 to hour 20 of the experience.

I haven’t gotten far enough in the game to comment on its quality. it plays alright, but it feels kind of papery in a way that’s hard to describe. what @broco is saying seems consistent with that.

music’s cool though

I reached the end of Water’s Fine. I found the game frustrating at first but I liked its style enough to keep at it, and Broco was right that it’s worth finishing. I got the good ending first (not knowing at the time that it was the good ending) and then had to do one more dive to see the other ending.

Thinking back on it now, I shouldn’t have used a certain powerup quite as enthusiastically as I did in a couple spots because I didn’t even get to see what some of the enemies do.

I’ve been impressed with everything I’ve seen by this developer.

a few years ago she asked on twitter for people coming to her shows to bring her old nat geos for use in a music video, and when my roommate and i went to see her i brought a huge stack of them that i had lying around and she gave us some merch as a thank you. i’m pretty sure they ended up in this video, still convinced there’s at least a one percent chance my roommate and i are the ā€œterri and larryā€ that got a special thanks in the video description

anyways i’ve seen her every time she’s been in texas since like 2015 and it’s already been settled and everything but just to add what josie and doolittle said, she said in a teen vogue interview i think that the name is supposed to be something quintessentially american i.e. ā€œbreakfastā€ with something americans see as exotic or foreign i.e. ā€œjapanese.ā€ it’s probably appropriate to be skeptical of names like that and no one’s wrong for bristling at it, but it’s probably not quite right to call it orientalist when it’s intentionally engaging with the same orientalist beliefs and attitudes that it’s being accused of, that she herself is a victim/recipient of as a korean-american. don’t mean to reignite any arguments or like accuse anyone of anything i just have to add my two cents because i stan stream jane cum thank you

tried playing 20th Century Foodcourt again, and then got pissed off that I could just be programming my game. so i did and I actually made a build for the first time in 4 years, and it was broken! so i spent all evening troubleshooting the dialog system and various softlocks. it’s 1am now lmao. lol.

My internet is dead and my phone reception is poor but this thread was still open in a tab and hitting reply worked so I am going to post some thoughts, brace yourself — I’m ā€œshooting!!ā€

All day long I was trying to remember why I bounced off Sable almost instantaneously. I still can’t recall but now I’m just gonna say ā€œI’ve read Moebius.ā€ I know all the games and comics and cartoons and movies that ripped off Moebius. I cannot possibly care about more Nise Moebius. This is maybe my biggest issue with video games: a lotta the coolest looking stuff is just a 1:1 lift of some old bullshit. Maybe there will be a tiny twist. Maybe you’ll get a game that looks like Chibis Mike Mignola, and it will be a fine thing to look at. But I can’t get hype for that, I can respect it to a degree, takes a lotta skills and talent I don’t have to pull shit like that off, but it don’t thrill me none.

Like, there aren’t many games that feel handwritten? Handwritten by someone who doesn’t have perfect penmanship? I think I honestly prefer slick huge budget Hollywoof wannabe bulllshit to stuff that just lifts some artist’s style wholesale and drops it into a video game; at least in the former there’s more of a chance of something being awkward or gross.

I can’t even get hype for games that feel ok nowadays, you gotta look good and feel good, it’s a high bar, boy I wish my modem would turn back on.

Anyway I’ll try Sable again soon, I bet it’s alright, please don’t take this personally anyone, when I finally played Pathologic 2 a few months ago I quit after 10 minutes, pretty sure I said ā€œfuck this puppet showā€ and ā€œthis fucking Monster Energy health bar is so hideous I can’t possibly play this gameā€ and ā€œI don’t care how mechanically interesting or thought provoking this is, I’m not playing a game where one of the characters has a Flavor Saverā€ and also

So yeah whatever happened to Hater, you think they’re doing ok?

I was playing a Paw Patrol game when my internet died and I was honestly upset I couldn’t continue, this is not a joke, this is 100% serious, pleasure is a very odd thing, sometimes.

I played like 20 minutes more of Sable and was in chat and friends can attest I wouldn’t stop saying, ā€œI can’t believe a video game looks like this.ā€

Was gonna say ā€œGimme fake Jean Girard though, I’d be all over thatā€ but turns out Jean Girard is a character from Talladega Nights and not the guy who drew Blueberry. So glad my internet finally came back so I could confirm that, really would have embarrassed myself otherwise, now I can finally put on one of those GCCX streams and go to bed.

while we’re on this topic panzer dragoon saga is way better than actual moebius and i’m a bit devastated that my playthrough might be trapped in disc 3 limbo bc of emulator shit… i’ve started so many times and never finished because of this kind of thing, despite counting it as one of my favorites (maybe i prefer orta but they’re so different). i wanted to post about all the little things i love but it makes me sad about not being able to play more for now.

it’s really good for games to exclusively have sidequests you can only unlock by talking to the same character who’s only around in a certain half of the day 20-50 times in a row until they say something weird, especially in a game like this made entirely out of details. i did this with several separate characters and it ended with a shy girl getting a crush on edge and we exchanged gifts and she gave me an amulet that did nothing and i was so happy. the way the light changes in towns throughout the day and night makes me cry. it has the best color work and environmental design and WATER. i love getting lost in a vast oceanic expanse of ā€œdungeonā€ with no walls and low draw distances. surviving combat is piss easy but the battle and dragon morph systems are so cool and it’s fun to optimize fights for perfect ratings (also the way orta iterated on them in a rail shooter context is really cool). easy breezy sky high ambitious vacation of a game by all accounts made in actual hell.

I bowed out of Panzer Dragoon Saga when, after sitting through the first 20 minute custcene, I operated an elevator and was treated to another custscene. I then flew my dragon in a straight line, pressed a button and was promptly greeted by another custcene.

This is 45 minutes of my life I am never getting back.

Which Moebius are people referring to?
