sounds like Sega’s late '90s/early '00s localisation actors alright!
it just amazes me to look at stuff like that and think, ‘they thought people would like this’
i want a ‘how did this get made’ style thing but for every decision sega made between 1999 and whenever the live action sonic the hedgehog movie was greenlit
pretty sure it looks like the boat going upriver in Apocalypse Now

one of the first games i got on my vita, 3 and a half years ago, was metal gear solid 3. this morning, i started playing it. it’s alright.
this optional swimming part at the end of Majora’s Mask is some gargantuan ho shit
have we talked about the voice acting for Kurosawa’s in-game bits in Binary Domain yet
Please do, Binary Domain is one of those games I felt it was best to play over a single, increasingly bleary night to sodium morning
so I have very strong recall of parts in my vision but am hard-pressed to recall specifics outside that
his bits should be in here
for the record, in all cutscenes leading up to this stage of the game, Kurosawa is voiced in Japanese as he is only scene opposite another Japanese cop. this is fine.
once you get in game, he is voiced by Johnny Yong Bosch in English. this is also fine.
the accent used is not fine.
I have tried to get into binary domain like 3 different times on the strength of the demo and the feedback here and Nagoshi but every single time I put it down in the first level because everything that isn’t shooting is extremely boring and the voice recognition doesn’t work
Same
I always feel way too self-conscious to be a dork and try to give voice commands to a computer game. It’s like trying to get a cat to listen to you, but cats are at least cute
good: the shooting never gets worse; arguably, the situations and bosses it starts throwing at you get better/more hilarious (it’s like the modern day equivalent to a NES movie license game where all the shit is made up except it’s all Yakuza team)
bad: the plot never gets better
whatever: just pick a response with the controller
edit:
I get this but I was playing Love Plus and I wasn’t ready to tell an anime that I love her, that is a bridge too far friend
Big Bo? Big Bo is better than anime man, he’s real
Play Odama once to completion and never fear raising your voice @ a vidcon again.
I quite enjoy binary domain but I could never get past that gorilla boss!
yeah I kept shooting and it just wouldn’t die
trying a fourth time, love you all
After Vanquish x 4 then Alpha Protocol 75%, I still had enough fuel for a few hours of Binary Domain. Expecting some sort of overlap experience based on those…think I got to a point where your team’s at a resort / villa for higher class colonists? Game was cool but short of hooking me and I can’t remember why (or really anything but voice commands and the above bland grounded arcade aesthetic).
Binary Domain > Vanquish I said it don’t @ me
Vanquish is never as revelatory as you feel like it wants to be but it at least succeeds in feeling like a 2D brawler literalized as a cover shooter moreso than any other I can think of, the postprocessing effects are generally aggressive enough for it to still look pretty good, and it has a bunch of totally arbitrary Candide references which naturally endear me to it. the movement is also pretty cool.
Binary Domain is an extremely by-the-numbers cover shooter (the damage modeling isn’t as interesting as it wants to be, the voice commands don’t really work, the upgrade trees are boring, the visuals are really flat, the level design constantly makes me wish I were playing Dog Days) with massively endearing characters. I want to love it but in practice it’s like a slightly less novel version of Blood on the Sand
