Games You Played Today Classic Mini

arcade is like, you have to speedrun the levels and know where the pickups are and chain kills and make points

it is good

yeah, go for arcade mode

This game is so very very good at its core but they didn’t know how to construct the rest of the game around it (although I do prefer the invaded science lab tileset over the hell tileset)

Noom Hell sucks freal

I played Aqua Teen Hunger Force Zombie Ninja Pro AM because I never did.

I laughed enough. But Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past is like the peak of comedy for me. Utterly insane nonsense ramblings.

I haven’t been updating y’all on my Elite Dangerous progress because 1) I’ve been playing it maybe once a week between other things, and 2) my trip to Colonia has been relatively uneventful.

Up until last night I was following the “Colonia Connection Highway”, a series of stations and settlements scattered hundreds of light-years apart amongst the otherwise barren systems leading to the Colonia system. On my last leg, I ended up scoring over 11 million credits in exploration data, including first discovery bonuses on several planets; if you’re ever out in the black of the coreward part of the Inner Orion Spur, there’s a very slim chance you’ll see my PSN name laying claim to some random ice worlds and gas giants.

However, I was getting a bit bored and wanted to push the limits of my craft, so I plotted a new route straight to Colonia… no stopovers or populated systems in-between. The initial calculation actually crashed the game on me, but the second time produced a route requiring 353 jumps. I also enabled the route to use jet-cone boosting; this is where you fly into the turbulent jetstream emanating from a neutron star, which supercharges the frame shift drive and allows you to jump up to four times your normal distance. It took a bit to do this correctly, but I managed to make two of these jumps without blowing up, so that’s a win.

this is true.

a bit disappointing, honestly. invalidates long-term planning.

The game crashing under your course plot is perfect

I was legitimately worried it would happen again when I plotted it the second time.

Plotting courses more than 1000ly take a minute or two and that makes me realize just how many star systems this game simulates, it’s wild.

I started playing it while listening to an audiobook of Speaker for the Dead and as soon as the banjo on the title screen started I realized it was going to fuck me up (good).

played a bunch of Castlevania Collection today. mostly Bloodlines and II and IV. i still really love all of these games. made it to the last stage of Bloodlines with Jonathan, but ran out of continues. i don’t feel too bummed, though, because it’s probably been over 10 years since i really played this game.

it’ll be nice once they add the JP versions of the games so i’ll bother with III.

Very nice, the student game was excellent but didn’t have any sort of ambience besides ‘vaguely cartoony’

what we got has superior ambiance to anything in recent memory

…!

Below is probably the most tightly-controlled thing I’ve seen in ages although its minalism was a poor match for roguelike (told you, Kris). We just got a From dump but that’s almost in its own category.

So few people know how to control a game the way a good handful of directors do, shooting nothing but a glass of milk and making it the most potent explosive thing in existence

Same here. I decided I wanted to clear all of these games since the only one I’ve ever cleared (on this collection) was Simon’s Quest (with a guide albeit, but on an actual NES). I just now finished the first game for the first time. I started it last night and made it to the final level and then finished it tonight.

I do not how I would be able to do this today without using the quick save they added. I mean last night was basically muscle memory since I could always reach the second to last area if not the boss but tonight was my first ever going through the entire final stage. The holy water was indispensable when fighting Dracula but I must have thrown myself at his first form for at least 45 minutes total before I finally got the hang of it. I guess it would have just taken a lot more patience (which I have) and time (which I don’t anymore) if I was still playing an actual cart and couldn’t use save states.

I got the trophy for clearing the game but it doesn’t really feel “legit” lol.

Anyway I still love classic Castlevania too. Looking forward to playing the game boy ones since I only played the first one but always heard the second was a lot better.

I finished Layers of Fear 2. There is some pretty good imagery in places. There are also multiple movie tributes. Some of them are well done, while others don’t really add much to the experience and kind of distract from the story.

The occasional action parts remain obnoxious, though most are mercifully short. It’s funny that I found myself dreading certain sounds and images, not because of the horror elements but because of the chore of getting through those parts. There’s nothing as bad as the worst stealth parts in Observer, though.

This game sure has a lot of mannequins.

I started void bastards. It’s really cool so far. Sort of a hybrid FPS/roguelike but there’s much more emphasis on planning and strategy than in either genre? I’m having a great time with it so far, if you’ve been curious about this game I recommend checking it out. It’s really not quite like anything I’ve played so far.
