i beat space marine 2 again (i wanted to see how i felt about it after the first round of updates and adjustments) and on a second playthrough i think it’s great! the difficulty is just right, the pacing is spot-on, the kinaesthetics are subtle and effective, and the boss-fights are actually good! a tps with fun bosses? unheard of!
also it’s like, a real videogame. it has discrete levels and a proper single-player which feels kinda rare at this scale (and in this format).
idk if they’ll get enough time to make the next chapter as polished (sorry but i can’t think of a better, less loaded word) as the first but i’m more excited for it now than i was after my first go.

it’s basically the only thing i’ve ever experienced that has specifically shouted out livermore and the oldest operational lightbulb which permanently endeared it to my heart (not livermore, the work)

Found out that adding -dx11 to the launch options of Silent Hill 2 makes it run a little better on my PC. Still rough, but at least there’s some hope of it running on my computer.

Been playing a lot of Dragon Ball Sparking Zero…I don’t think it’s gonna replace Budokai Tenkaichi 3 as my nostalgia pick or an overall package, but it’s the closest they’ve gotten in 20 years, so. Looks great, more or less plays like I remember. Needs more original Dragon Ball representation, though.

I do like the branching story stuff they’re doing, though. Opted not to join Piccolo to fight Raditz, which led to a wild alternative storyline where Goku never died in that fight and Frieza and the Ginyu Force wind up coming to earth. It’s not radically different, but it beats retreading the same story again.

I need someone to post a comprehensive set of videos with all the alternate story stuff because I don’t particularly want to play this but would like to see what they came up with

I’m curious how much player agency for minor choices matter, too. The alternate “Frieza comes to earth” storyline I played had a few moments where Chiaotzu came in and did something to save the day, which sorta makes sense given how he used his powers, but makes more sense because I chose specifically to train with him at one point. Like, had I chosen Tien or Yamcha, I wonder if it would have picked them.

I guess I could pick again and see if it changes.

Oof, Mouthwashing gets pretty gnarly. Pretty solid sci-fi horror in the walking sim mold. It’s nice and short, which is good because it’d be hard to take much more of that atmosphere. I need a shower after finishing it.

Also, props to that game for managing to have other people present in a horror walking sim. Feels like very few games have tried to pull that off, and this one does it well. The whole ultra-dithered PSX-ish graphical style works well for that. These like graphic novel ass character designs totally work as embodied in this game, and you do feel like they’re there with you. They rarely animate the character models, so that may have something to do with it. They move around you, but almost always while you’re looking away.

My one major critique here is that the mascot horror stuff with the donkey guy felt really hackeneyed to me, way too warmed-over late 2010’s zeitgeisty. But it probably raised their sales by like 30 percent so who can blame them.

I didn’t like the regular appearances of the mascot but when you have to do the stealth minigame, and you look up at that distorted horse model only visible with your blacklight, and otherwise it is defined by sound effects, that worked for me.

Actually, I also like that the mascot horror angle was a fakeout. The very beginning of the game implies that it’d be a focus and then it just falls into the background of the actual human horror at the heart of the game

I did like that stealth scene you mentioned, yeah. That was effective, especially the way it uses the scanner. I liked the scanner revealing the invisible walls in a really uncanny way too.

I’m definitely going to play their previous game now.

One of these years 20020/20021 will come and finish the follow-up story.
