games you played today chronicles X: ten things I played about you

I remember I quit playing for half a dozen reasons but what those reasons were are lost to “I don’t remember” but I am sure they were good and true to my experience.

gg aleste 3 is a miracle of the modern age, of course. but the first two gg alestes are also excellent!
nemesis 3: the eve of destruction is incredibly hard, but i want to keep getting further in it because it looks incredibly good for an msx1 game.
capcom vs snk 2’s backgrounds are nowhere near as good as those in the first game. but the cahracter sprites look so sharp and cool! (not morrigan). plus it’s amazing that in the year 2024 i can play dreamcast games on a handheld. marvel vs capcom 2! soul calibur! psychic force 2012! triggerheart exelica! giga wing 2! wow

This plan got thwarted when Limahl got murdered by some guy. Funnily enough, it seems corpses can still communicate because I got an SOS notification from him that was like “Help, I’ve been killed by this guy at these coordinates, I need Body Reconstruction Elixir 1 to revive”.

So I spent an entire in-game year trying to work out how to get the elixir for him, which can only be made from herbs that you get from one hidden cave in a vast wilderness area. Then when I finally concocted the elixir, found his dead body and gave it to him, he’s like “Sorry I can’t accept this, thanks anyway”. Dude, you begged me to get this for you but I guess you prefer being a ghost now? Oh well, good riddance then Nong Chu, or {name|C} as my sworn sister calls him.

Meanwhile the simp guy keeps showing up and trying to sacrifice himself to save me everytime I get into an unwinnable battle.

Also I chose a destiny called Witchcraft III, which means every attack has a 10% chance to turn the enemy, and all enemies around them, into angry chickens that attack indiscriminately, so most battles for me end up turning into wild chicken brawls.

Are you playing GG Aleste 3 on the collection or otherwise? The mode on the collection that gets rid of slowdown/flicker is ridiculous. It’s such a good game either way though.

I’m usually a slowdown apologist but in gg aleste 3 iirc I think the actual screen scrolling slows down while you have the fire button held down and goes back to normal when you let go, which is a big no from me dog

I want to buy the collection just for the no slowdown mode, but idk, I’ve given m2 a lot of money recently, I need to chill out

there’s another one of those steam demo fest things going on. I played metal slug tactics and it seems like it’s pretty good for people who aren’t me. it’s less tactics rpg and more puzzle game. you control 3 people, there’s no healing, and the enemy has like 10-20 people on half the missions. you only win by making sure you get sync attacks on every turn, which means lining up your guys to all be in range of whatever enemy you want to attack, but then also being behind cover because you die in 3 hits. my brain ain’t made for that shit, I’m more about the customization and slow overwhelming force kind of tactics game. the systems seem to work, though, I think this one is going to find a receptive audience somewhere.

I also played I am your beast, and that one is a good time. it also has a puzzle quality to it, in the way that, idk, hotline miami has a puzzle quality to it. a turn your brain off and press the gas pedal kind of puzzle quality. the shooting feels good, but it has a mechanic where a lot of/most of the time throwing your gun at someone does more damage than shooting them, which is kind of weird but puts a nice risk/reward dynamic to things. it has a story that’s somewhere between metal gear solid and first blood, which works, and the voice acting is really good. I was hoping that lady from the trailer was like the main character or the main bad guy or something, but no, she just dies in the preamble between one of the demo levels. a real shame, great voice. the only problem I had with it in the demo is sometimes if there’s just one enemy left it’s a pain in the ass to try to find them. you’re just bleeding time trying to track down one idiot who looks exactly like a tree or something, not really what I’m looking to do in a time attack game. oh, I also didn’t like the tree climbing stuff, felt quite janky. anyway, buying this one when it comes out, you did your job demo.

Simple 1500 Series Vol.6: The Hanafuda (PS1)

Nice chill music. With the help of some handy guides found through Google it didn’t take me long to teach myself the very basics of the two Hanafuda variants here, Koi-Koi and Sakura; except a lot of the scoring comes down to whether you grabbed rather arbitrary sets of certain cards–yaku–so until you’ve memorized those which seems unlikely to be something I’ll convince my silly brain to do you’re still gonna be a bit at sea. And a heck of a lot seems to come down to luck anyway, although in Koi-Koi you can double down and go for it so that’s fun when it pans out. Anyway chill tunes, didn’t mind it.

" " " Vol.5: The Igo

Aka “Go,” I guess? Looks like Othello or whatever and has totally different rules but still seeeeems simple but sure isn’t and I really couldn’t wrap my head around how to capture board space so did not go well, I’m too dumb. = o Graphics & music not quite as nice.

" " " Vol.1: The Mahjong

Music and graphics are decent. Back in the day uhh 20 plus? years ago I taught myself kinda how to play mahjong so I could play that one that came out late on for NGPC which also happened to be a cheesecakey kind of thing but I swear I was totally just in it for the 'jong. Eh anyway I’ve completely forgotten how mahjong works except the little words the CPU was shouting as they were (probably?) crushing me were kind of familiar, so I bailed on this pretty quick, guess I have no more urge to (re)learn mahjong.

Linia Super is a neat little mobile puzzle game.

The playing field displays a pattern of geometric shapes in different colors. At the top of the screen is a key with one or more colors in a sequence. Your goal is to draw a line through shapes on the screen in a sequence matching the key. So if the key shows Red Black White, you have to draw a straight line through three shapes in that same sequence. You have to do it in a single stroke and can’t intersect with any colors out of the sequence. Complicating this is the fact that the shapes move around, so there’s a timing and dexterity element at play.

Each chapter in the game seems to have a different gimmick and also has what it calls a “Hot Mode”, essentially the levels remixed to be more difficult.

Redout 2 is free on the Epic Games Store today. I wanted to play it because there’s been more than a few Anti-Gravity games that have come out in the absence of Wipeouts/Fzeros. It seems like people are starving and continue to starve. Redout 2 has really remarkable movement mechanics, you have to use the right and left stick to steer and strafe, while also pitching up and down to navigate the track’s loops and angles. There’s two types of boost, and a boost overheat mechanic to manage. I feel like with practice it could be fun, but I find the generic future setting to be kind of bland. It has the elements of what made Fzero and Wipeout’s settings fun but is missing something. Wipeout was mainly riffing on the motifs of EDM/Rave culture from 90’s england and Fzero was riffing on US comic book culture for the original and sequels. Episode 1 racer, divorced of it’s Star Wars references, still has really good world and vehicle design which makes everything feel tangible. Redout and it’s ilk are missing that crucial stylistic inspiration, IMO. I find the tracks to be winding and hard to parse at speed, and hard to memorize because of how long they are and there not really being any large landmarks to get a visual reference for where you are. There’s multiple jumps where you kind of have to know if you should boost or not to make them, and a lot of jumps requiring mid air control to hit the end, and so that can be a little frustrating. At times it’s very disorienting to play. Not sure how much I’m going to play it, I feel like at a higher level of play it could be fun.

Y’all got me to try GG Aleste 3. It’s fun! I like all these Compile (style?) games.

In motion the game is super chunky and it’s super hard. but in terms of vibes this game is an all timer for me. Made it through each boss by the skin of my teeth. Only one retry is kind of brutal though.
