i played dark alliance 2 for like four hours straight just hooting and hollering every time i used a potion cuz the WHOLE GAME would slow down so the animation of my life bar getting bigger could play. EVERY TIME.

also the game was super fucking dark and I thought it was always one of those levels where you have a faint halo of light but no i just had the brightness too low for half the time i was playing

doing co-op with barb and cleric and THE BEST PART OF THIS GAME IS EVERY LEVEL YOU GET TWICE AS MANY POINTS TO SPEND the worst part is there are worthless trap powers and no respeccing so it took about three resets before i was happy with my class power. if anyone needs to draw the tutorial map from memory hit me up because i just did it six times

OH THERE’S THIS FEATURE where you can delete and load in a new character during the game (only really useful in the first ten minutes) but if you DELETE AND CONFIRM WITHOUT PICKING ANOTHER CHARACTER YOURE GONE FROM EXISTENCE AND ITS A SINGLE PLAYER GAME NOW. so that caused another reset

ohh! there’s a fight where two exploding dudes kick your ass then you have to run through two floors of poison gas and a thousand enemies to get out of the level after you beat it. so the cleric died during the fight, and i ran out a door to find a save point, because save points automatically revive your buddy, BUT AS SOON AS I WALK IN THE DOOR THERES A TEXT PROMPT THAT I MASH THROUGH and whoops ive saved over our file. thjs is now the only slot!! so i had to strategize how the hell to get out of here without my healing buddy and 2 health potions, otherwise our save file would be FUCKED. to everyones surprise i juked a bunch of dead dogs and our save is safe. i made a second file in case i ever want to dance with death in the bloodmoor laboratory again

FF 1 and 13 are the only ones I ever finished and I think 13 has grown on me in time.

you forgot the part where we did things out of order so by the time we got to the warehouse we were just slaughtering those ninjas lol

i forgot that because i ALWAYS go to bloodmanor first because who would want to save rich people from ninjas in a warehouse? i wanna murder the lady whos been performing vivisection for her own personal pleasure!

the game runs at 60 until anything happens in which case it drops to like, 10 fps. casting my cleric buffs makes the game stutter. dark alliance 2 owns

i love how the spells sound like someone throwing glass bottles at a concrete wall, but only recording the first second of impact. every time anyone casts ANYTHING the game is like CLANG, CLANK, BLINK, CRASH

the cleric has a spell where she just drops fireballs on people that do like 3 to 175 damage which is ridiculously stupid but also effective. i cant wait to get smite evil as a paladin. more liek dork alliance 2

I tried One Step from Eden today, a cross between Megaman Battle Network and Slay the Spire. Really looks like it should be great, but I started to get disappointed when it became clear the whole deckbuilding thing doesn’t have much effect on whether you win or lose. Success or failure at dodging boss attack patterns seems to be everything.

Finally finished Homeworld prequel, i never played the other Homeworld games, but i decided to start on this one.

i really liked those cars going into the desert, took me months (literally) to get on and understrand how armored, railgun and light attacks worked together. i am really bad with RTS games overall, so i am happy i managed to finish that one.

I’ve been playing a lot of the recently translated Metal Max 3 for DS and greatly enjoying myself. It’s a series I’ve always meant to put some time in and this one hasn’t disappointed. Open world post-apocalyptic JRPG that doesn’t take itself too seriously, Fallout meets Dragon Quest.

It really lets you loose and there’s a surprising amount of freedom in most of the things you do, with a lot of different endings including some you can get very early. After a little ways into the game you find a bar where you can recruit your party from pre-built or build your own. I went with a pro wrestler and an artist and currently have them rolling on a gunned out motor cycle and tank, respectively, while I’m in a keyed out old patrol car. I also have a dog with a flamethrower.

The areas are fun, like a town built in a satellite dish installation where they’re using the dish to catch rainwater. You can buy mosquito repellent to use when you sleep in less secure locations to avoid getting tiny hp loss during the night. I joined a cult to get discounts on vehicle mods and found an old baseball stadium that, after using almost 30 denim suits to tie a rope so i could climb in from the roof, found a semi-hidden area where i could reactivate an announcer android who resumed calling a long-passed baseball game.

There’s one pretty enormous caveat: the encounter rate is absolutely RIDICULOUS. Some areas are much more unbearable than others, but the ones that are bad are Really Really Bad. In the baseball stadium proper I got in three encounters running from home plate to first base, one every couple of steps. The battles are quick, luckily, but it’s still deeply annoying. There’s fast travel options on the map but I’m surprised I haven’t come across anything that will repel encounters for a bit. Doing a little digging and this was apparently a big strike in Japanese reviews at the time as well. That being said I find the whole package extremely endearing and interesting in spite of this, so if you’ve got a decent tolerance for these things I highly recommend it.

Played through Redo! today. A really nice example of a 4-hour metrovania. Very tense and methodical play, with a biomechanical/grey-goo themed setting.

I followed the dev on Twitter and he’s currently working on another game in the same style, but in that one you can press a button to go temporarily into the cyberplane:

humble gave away f1 2018 for free and it fulfilled my very recent desire to play a new racing game. it’s really satisfying to play.

I’ve rapidly become disillusioned with Fall Guys. I really don’t like the design of the in game store. I saw a rly cute Guy Fieri flame pattern in the store and it costs a lot of in game money. The amount of time I’d have to spend grinding for it is waaaaay too much and it’s so tempting to just throw them five bucks for it. The rotation of the store goes really quick and there’s no indication of when any individual item will return to the store, and there’s only 9 items in the store at any given time and about half of them can only be bought with the currency you get from winning which kinda sucks if you aren’t particularly skilled at the game. I rly don’t like FOMO and as soon as I can see the treadmill in a game clearly I lose interest fast. I don’t mind games that don’t respect my time as long as they also don’t Expect my time either.

OSRS and Rimworld are games that come to mind that r like that.

I finally finished Sakura Wars and while the actual gameplay is pretty average the characters and music shine through well. It has a bit of a lull in the middle where character drama drags on too long and the main thrust of the plot becomes unclear. I ended up going with the ninja girl who is, I found out after finishing the game, canonically 13. I await the police.

Started up Ghost of Tsuhima and after about 10 hours I enjoy the open world but all the good stuff are super minor quality of life things like the wind waypoint marker and the fact that NPCs move with you while talking (rather than at a slightly different speed independent of your movement).

The game has some weird oversights, like you can’t quit a mission mid-way so if you’re stuck or your stats suck then you’re screwed and have to press through. I did one sidequest to get a legendary armour set, when you get it you get ambushed by enemies. I did this super early in the game and couldn’t keep the healing train going since your healing resource is only filled by combat competency (parrying, special kills). So if you suck early on then the game just says ‘fuck you’ since there’s no real grace period before a lethal blow. To rub salt in the wound your character is constantly remarking how strong the armour makes them feel (this mission took 12 attempts).

Bow combat is weird and I’m not sure you’re meant to use a bow for anything other than stealth despite the game signalling you to take out archers in some missions. It is always less risky to just walk to them while dodging (their tell is a shout) and just melee them.

I have been playing a bit of Iconoclasts, but I am not feeling keen on it. I dislike the style and it also feels floaty.
What’s the opinion on here? Masterpiece, so that i should just get used to it? Or is it not a must play metroidvania?

i beat dying light and i have as many interesting things to say about the game as the game does

I had the same reaction you did and dropped it after the first few areas. It seemed to get some hype before it came out and then didn’t leave much of a mark.

Middling parkour and repeated enemy placements was my only takeaway

Wasn’t terrible but needed a lot more seasoning/random shit
