Games You Played Today: Actress Again: Current Code (Part 1)

I can’t stop Huntin’ World Monsters.

In Outward, I joined the socialist forest commune-of-communes and I’m trying to stop the objectivist desert city from doing terrorism in support of their illegal land grab. I had to earn the support of a tribe of giants by doing errands for them and learning about their culture so I could speak to them diplomatically. I ended up completely overdoing it and completing all the optional tasks, including going into their old storage shed and fighting a dinosaur so I could read a history book they dumped in there. Because I did all 6 optional tasks, my talk with the giants’ chief was this extremely funny parade of successes, where my character said the exact right thing every time and the chief just got more and more delighted with me. At the end he was so beside himself that he not only joined the collective, he made me an honorary giant and taught me how to have 40 more HP.

Aw I wish! I’m on PC. Last night I realized how many interesting optional quests I missed in the leap from HR to MR and have been plowing through those. Some company would be nice.

We gotta thread where I hated if. Please post there about it.

That’s like a genuine request. Give me them thought dumps on the bad game I couldn’t stand.

back when sony had this website for playstation underground members, you could post your (sony console) game collection along with like a review and stuff, so i did that, and included a negative review about final fantasy x, and i got exclusively comments from people telling me i should just go back to playing barbie games or something. that barbie game for the super nintendo was a better time than final fantasy x, so fuck those haters.

I finished Anodyne to my satisfaction on stream yesterday. That means I beat the boss and spent about an hour going out of bounds before turning it off, probably forever.

How I feel about this game varies wildly depending on my framework for thinking about it.

As a game, I think it stumbles in lots of ways but has surprisingly thoughtful dungeon design. Except for the one time it absolutely fails to have a thoughtful dungeon design and is just a parody of bad maze dungeons, which I didn’t think was funny at all. The combat is totally inessential but not commonly frustrating. The collectables are cute.

As an homage to Link’s Awakening, I think it does more with some of the mechanics (jumping, roller bars) and the dreamy atmosphere than the original does. But it’s also a bit edgy for my tastes at points, like where you gotta stab a bunch of people for no reason. The fact that the game is extremely explicitly referencing the “Select Button Glitch” from the original release of Link’s Awakening is pretty remarkable.

As an aesthetic experience, I think it’s mostly wonderful. The colors in some parts of the game, particularly the village, are so burnt out and strange without being totally unnatural. It feels like a Zelda game that’s been left out in the sun too long and has started to go weird. The music is pretty great - nothing memorable in terms of melodies, but perfect for the game.

As a companion to Axiom Verge, the other game that explores the idea of glitches-as-mechanics that came out around the same time (in my mind, i have no idea if that’s true), it’s a showcase of how to do that Right, and better than Axiom Verge did. Popping out of bounds was (a) reserved for the very end of the game, and (b) possible pretty much anywhere, so it felt like a wide open arena of weird crap. Compare this to Axiom Verge where it was only possible in certain areas, was necessary to complete the game, and mostly felt like going into pre-designed rooms that just happen to be aesthetically uncomfortable.

As a game that has Bob the Hamster from the OHRRPGCE flagship game in it hiding in a random screen that you have to glitch into…well, it’s great!! I love it. I was squealing like an excited child when I saw him, I was overjoyed.

As a game that was made by two people in less than a year, it’s pretty damn stunning. Lots of art, music, really well-designed dungeons (mostly)…it’s really, really impressive.

Honestly I’m surprised I’ve written this much about it, because it made me feel almost nothing. It’s really well named in that way. But I feel like it has all the component parts of something amazing and just never really comes together. Plus I’d rather never play a game about a breakup again, honestly…

Anyway, really excited to play Anodyne 2, and thanks to @AutomaticTiger for recommending that game, which made me go back and play this game to completion.

also i’m a big dumb idiot and didn’t take any screenshots so i stole all those from giantbomb. like a poser.

I’ve been savoring the Celeste B-sides this week. I thought it would be frustrating, but it’s clear they were each designed to be completable in one sitting.

The music owns.

Wait is it actually called ‘Kurosawa Mode’? I thought that was just ‘Black and White Filter mode’ or something.

kurosawa mode is such a great concept because any person actually interested in japanese cinema would rightly understand it as dumb bullshit and anyone not interested couldn’t possibly care what the black and white filter mode that they will never turn on is called

I just played final fantasy 13 and one of Lightning’s few character traits is hating her little sister’s fiance. I wish there had been way way more of that, and certainly a drinking scene

But you forget the murky realm that lies between, where the posers and other bearers of half-assed knowledge dwell.

Speaking of Kurosawa mode, I really do need to reinstall and play more Sekiro. Love that game.

Have been playing a ton of Hades lately and really enjoying it, and finally completed my first escape this evening. It is incredibly horny for something that’s not porn. But hey, got to wreck asshole dad’s face so that works for me.

Also continuing to putter around in NFS: Heat which is just really enjoyable for something that’s so incredibly truncated. Balance of the cars is… well, there’s the '73 Porsche 911 RSR (darling of someone at Ghost Games and seemingly wildly overpowered in most of their games), a handful of very fast cars, and a surprisingly wide field of vehicles not quite at the top up there.

The world map takes up the bottom quarter of the overall space allotted for scrolling the map, there’s no night time Off-Road races, and only a few mini-challenges that take advantage of combining hybrid Off-Road+Drifting setups. Feels a lot like they made a quarter the game intended, but for what’s there, it’s pretty okay.

Played 49 minutes of Anodyne 2 and I’m already really impressed with it. The writing is leagues better, the controls are real nice, the atmosphere is as good as the first so far. Looking forward to playing this in little chunks.

Curse of the Moon 2 is the first game I’m playing on easy in a very, very long time. Honestly I have no idea how people play this on veteran.

Also, the level based structure makes me want a sequel to Demons Souls so, so bad. Maybe I’ll just play through and actually beat Demons now…

My limited time has been perfect for these NES game collections I’ve beaten Megaman 1, Castlevania, River City Ransom, and Contra so far. Big surprise these games are pretty good.

Would be playing the Switch online NES games if there was an easy way to use headphones on switch.
