Games You Played Today: Actress Again: Current Code (Part 1)

i found the controls in the steambot kind of not so great. at least, in that opening tutorial.

Friends and I have been enjoying this a lot too and I hope it keeps Melee alive as well. We’ve been Meleeing a lot during lockdown and the slight lag has been a persistent annoyance. The only issue is spectating matches which occasionally makes it chug with more than two people in a room but I heard the guy’s working on a spectator mode. It’s crazy that one person’s passion project just wholly eclipses the majority of online fighting game efforts by major developers.

been playing a bit of injustice, the dc fighting game. it’s not very exciting. it’s got the same clunky wooden feel as a mortal kombat game, but without all the silly over the top gore. the red of the gore would probably be too bright a colour for this miserable-looking grey mess anyway.

also i finished shenmue ii. what a beautiful game. if you look at ryo’s notebook at the end, all his notes for guilin are about the natural beauty surrounding him, as opposed to the functional aide memoires of every other chapter
i think he really frows as a person over the course of the game, and i wouldn’t be totally surprised if, by the end of the series, his goal changes from getting revenge on lan di to something else.

been playing milestone shmup ports on gamecube. chaos field extended and radirgy (radio allergy). they are both fun in different ways. the OST in chaos field is incredible! radirgy has some great mechanics and there are randomized title screen messages that really creeped me out lol.

i am apparently the only person to ever mention milestone (the company) on these forums. and now i am mentioning them again because they make cool shmups that are not as hard as cave shooters and they are cute and weird and have incredible soundtracks

Same – my understanding is that, since you are transmitting the entire relevant game state, having more objects and especially objects with physics simulation just adds a ton of data that you may not be able to transmit in time.

Is it especially network-heavy, or does it have restrictions like no items and only on certain minimal stages?

They’re not transmitting the game state – still just inputs. The game assumes certain inputs from your opponent, and if wrong will revert to a previous state when given the new information. I’m not sure how he’s saving states or simulating multiple frames with previous inputs to get back to the new state, however. And he’s expressed a dev blog won’t come out for a while due to how much time it would take to write up and having other more important work to do on the project.

The only way items or certain stages don’t work is due to desync / non-determinism in the game itself. For example, Pokemon Stadium has stage transitions and it has to load those from disk on another thread. Being multithreaded, it’s hard to enforce a strict timing for this load and often results in desyncs, so Stadium transformations are currently disabled. Currently music is also disabled because it loads on another thread, too.

From previous post about how his replay system works, I think items should work but they’re not enabled in the current build (which was meant to be a minimal feature set that supports the tournament scene first).

He did write up an article on desyncs in the replay system, and he said it’s very relevant to how the rollback code works too: https://medium.com/project-slippi/fighting-desyncs-in-melee-replays-370a830bf88b

Whenever I hear anyone say anything super cheery, I just want to follw it up with “STEAMBOT CHRONICLES”.

Also really weird that there was a PSP steambot chronicles tie in game that was Blokus.

it’s 2020

you should own 3 adapters and 20 gamecube controllers in various states of disrepair

also break a finger or two to make melee tech easier

I literally have been mentally ruminating on the issue since Slippi went wide

I can play Melee and murder my old man hands or I can play Ultimate and suffer netcode

or I could play nothing

:boh:

I’ve just become a coach for others while my hands regenerate. Ain’t no way I’m going back online with Ultimate after experiencing rollback.

got an 8bitdo m30 today so i played bloodlines
