Games You Played Today: Actress Again: Current Code (Part 1)

I don’t believe I’ve hit that wall, but I did lose to boss in 2 turns because I wasn’t positioning my unions properly with the deadlocks and the flanks and all that fun. Will report back if I hit it. Online readings go overly into gaming the battle rank, but with most these games (SaGa games etc), adaptability and being flexible to try new things has been a sound strategy thus far.

In last remnant each turn the game gives you a few randomly selected strategies for each of your battle groups and you get to choose one of them.

Healing herbs are used if you pick item-heavy strategies (Like: « Attack while using items »)

When you run out of herbs these strategies just stop appearing and you suddendly only have attack options. It’s very easy to not notice because this game has a billion other systems to keep in mind!

Herb strategies are excellent because healing is powerful, your groups can just sit back and heal while others engage enemies, plus if you use enough them enough in battle you eventually get powerful item arts that allow you to resurrect fallen groups

Healing spells are similar but only used by a few allies and gotten later, it’s just easier to rely on herbs

Last remnant remastered on switch is about the same as the PC version IIRC except with an excellent new essential speedup option

There’s a great youtube channel that does in depth side by side comparisons of games on different consoles. I might have seen it on there. They cover a lot of SE games. Can’t remember the name of the channel for the life of me.

Hoo baby can I sure get sucked into a crummy match-3 game for half a day

(Originally posted in wrong thread)

I bought Last Remant on steam like 7 years ago and never launched and as soon as you folks started talking about it, it sounds like a new job and hobby so maybe I will never play it.

It’s a SaGa game in everything but name, the true way to play is to be confused by the weird mechanics all the time and sort of barely make it nonetheless, then at one point hit a massive wall and look on the internet for answers without finding anything that can help you

It’s the closest a videogame gets to working at a new job

Its weird going back to games I played while I had an infant and seeing all the shit I missed because I was too tired to read and/or concentrate for even one second.

Can you buy Last Remnant on Steam anymore? I don’t see it anywhere in the store pages.

It is fucking crazy that they kept paying me to do my job during that period. It was basically paid parental leave.

played a bunch of VR games on my quest:

Fail Factory:

Boring minigame collection disguised as a mild criticism of capitalism, bad

Tetris Effect:

Good but I need to hook up my headphones. The first song almost made me cry??? I’m very fragile today though

Gravity Labs:

Kept freezing on me, probably my fault, but it seemed like a cute 3D version of the incredible machine, sorta

Angry Birds in VR now:

Just as good as regular angry birds, which is to say that I don’t understand any of the strategies and it always makes me feel like a failure, but watching shit fall over is fun

Apex…Construct? I think:

What if we made a game where the player is the one being played???” but in VR now. Sucks, hate it.

Help Yourself:

A neat take on the “do the same thing multiple times, with each iteration happening all at once.” Essentially a tech demo but I dug it quite a bit. Loading the guns was stupidly finicky though

Physics Playground:

Tech demo that made me wanna vom. I smacked a dummy with a sword 75 times and all I got was this Thunk Noise

All in all, lots of gimmicks, not much in the way of meat except Tetris Effect. But I’m also kind of sticking to gimmicky stuff because I’m not super into long, intense games anymore. The meatiest attempt was certainly Apex Construct but I fucking hated it sooo

shooting the bow was cool tho

re: secret of mana talk from a few days ago, seems a large number of the complaints about SoM are addressed in this hack that’s been getting some buzz

It’s been like 7 years since I last played Demon’s Souls, seemed like a good time to revisit as I can soon compare and contrast with the remake (via other people). Never really leaned hard into magic before, obviously makes for a breezier playthrough. I wonder how much balloon corpse body horror will remain in the PS5 version.

My favourite bit of gear is this debris pile left behind by Leechmonger (a perfect visual representation of my state of mind, +5 Psyche).

Playing Deadly Premonition 2 and somehow not minding having to closely follow a dog on my skateboard for 10 minutes.

Open world games are weird for me…

The big games in that genre (BotW, New Fallout, Far Cry…) honestly feel like Frankenstein abominations that indiscriminately add standard gameplay into a big game world and call it a day. 70% of the game is traversal as downtime, 30% missions that could be found somewhere else, and there’s nothing that keeps you going. Downtime is too slow, too unexciting, and a too large part of the game

In contrast I tend to like games that can have absolutely mundane missions, but also good traversal and/or an interesting hook or atmosphere to pull me into the world. (Deadly Premonition, Nier, Gravity Rush, Death Stranding) They either try to alleviate the inherent boredom of the open world genre, or they try to craft a world that makes you want to be bored in. They feel like they use the strengths of the genre and are not trying to ignore its weaknesses. You know?
