Games You Played Today: Actress Again: Current Code (Part 1)

I also played through Undertale for the first time this year. I played Deltarune a week later and I appreciate it more on almost every dimension. I’d like to hear what you think once you’ve gone through it.

Can you get the good ending in one take? Cause I played it years ago on Steam, this time would be on Switch… wouldn’t want to have to play it 2x in a row to get what I’m trying to get, naw mean?

you don’t have to replay the game to get the good end so long as you never kill anyone. but you will have to see and play through the normal ending once

To add on to what aislesgrises said, if you do everything juuuust right the first time through, at the end a character will challenge you to reload your save game and do a couple of extra steps. Doing this will add on an entirely new area with a bunch more stuff and a much more involved ending than the one you got initially. If you experienced all of that, then you got the “best” ending. You didn’t get the best ending if you never had the chance to do the Earthbound-inspired “walk around the entire game after it’s finished to see what everybody says now that the game is over” sequence.

this is very similar to my experience with undertale. i think i enjoyed deltarune a bit more too.
ultimately i think i was just way more into the actually story/characters of undertale than i expected after being put off by the meta-layer and gameplay mechanics.

i’ve been trying to play dragon quarter for years, but I am always trying to go for a no-party-wipe run because of the SOL system, and the bosses are too hard and I give up lol.

idk, maybe i have the wrong idea about what would change, but i like the idea of the minimal default story. i don’t want to see any extra stuff until i clear & restart the game. should i just get over it and restore/restart as needed so i can actually finish it…what have others done?

Yes deal with the restart. It’s a game about chubawomba. I think my first time playing I got 70% done and just failed and had to restart and beat it barely that time.

My second time I failed at like 30 and 50?

I got like halfway through, restarted then beat the game on the second try.

I think you should try to get as far as you can and if a boss is difficult, just use the dragon. It’s here for that reason! Maybe you can pull through by using the dragon sparingly! If you use the right skills you can beat any battle in one attack and only add 8% or so to the d-counter. IIRC you need to stack buffs then use the most damaging skill

Just for the sake of talking about the game…my first time I got stuck on that lone assassin guy who uses HundredGears, at the end of Industrial Zone I think? I just felt like even though dragon was an option, the random battles had been getting really difficult for me and he was absolutely destroying me, that I somehow fucked up my leveling/gear and needed to just start over. and my d-counter was pretty high…

This time I am on the big three-part ranger battle. Admittedly I have only tried once but it was very discouraging. My d-counter is very low and in general I’ve been doing really well this time so it feels bad to have to use the dragon so much all of a sudden. I died as soon as I turned it off. The tank especially sucks, because it absorbs electricity and I am using all electric weapons & skills because I am in the ice area, so seems like I have no choice but to use dragon there.

I think the key will be the first phase where you fight like 10 rangers, it seems overwhelming and tempting to cluster them together and use d-breath, but I gotta just do it the old fashioned way.

To add to what others have said, the writing isn’t just dead prose, it’s also massively cliche, just cliche piled on cliche, to the extent that we were all laughing about the story beats we called hours in advance. It’s also plagued by little technical glitches that do a lot to undermine the graphical beauty. The dog is a severely undercooked mechanic that ends up doing the opposite of what it wants (you get annoyed at it instead of growing close to it) and gets abandoned for the barely-there back half of the game anyway.

Probably the most hysterical part of the game is where you find your first videotape. You find a Blair Witchian late 90’s video camera abandoned in the woods for no reason, and then you find a mysterious tape with a red band on top. Instead of giving you any room to experience any sort of mystery, the second you pick up the tape a big full-screen dialog pops up that says: Red tapes allow you to alter reality! Rewind the tape back and forth to make the real world change around you! Amazing.

I remember with Dragon Quarter I looked up a few bits of advice beforehand and was able to beat it without restarting without much difficulty. I recall skipping the first save point so I had an extra save token later, and saving right before every boss fight rather than right after them to save on back tracking if I ate it (I did lose to regular enemies once and had to redo a boss fight due to it, oh well). Only had to use the dragon once or twice, but I did generally play rather cautiously.

Was thinking about this game today, weirdly enough

Hades is changing my perspective on action games

for the life of me I don’t understand why people like it so much

also yeah you can come on

honestly I can’t! Sekiro is like, fine, I get it, it’s good, sure. Hades is a weird combination of “maybe people never played a roguelike before?” and “maybe people never played a moba before?”

just totally unclear on why it’s supposed to be so great

the desire to flirt with every character was almost enough for me to keep playing the game after I decided I did not like how it played. Tsundere Megaera and her raspy voice made me blush every time I talked with her. I set that game aside weeks ago, but I’m still thinking about all those characters.
