Games You Played Today: Actress Again: Current Code (Part 1)

Secret of Mana is the classic SNES game that most feels like it’s barely entered Alpha. The stunlocks, “hit” “detection”, balance…we’d sure care if they hadn’t managed to compress that soundtrack off a CD

yeah, secret of mana actually plays pretty badly, it just gets a pass for everything else about it being so delightful and novel

The tiger is literally the only hard boss in Secret of Mana, after that every boss can be beaten by just selecting spells in the pause menu for 5 minutes

I guess I had trouble with the first nurikabe boss as well as a kid because of the time limit. I kept hitting its third eye during iframes

I can’t imagine being on that team and fixing mechanical issues with every release, confident your game is at least technically better than the shambling beauty you put out in '93, to be met with increasing indifference

I can

they threw everything out and made Legend, a game both openly hostile and inviting

the weird ‘close enough’ aspects of how SoM controls really were ahead of their time, really pioneers in the ‘single player MMORPG’ genre. though i guess it had local multi

it’s like entering an incomparable garden, bursting with statuary and exquisitely curated and exotic plants, and hearing the iron gate creak and slam shut behind you and realizing you’re hopelessly lost

I guess you found the real Secret of mana

Speaking of which I tried to salvage my reckless purchase of Trials of Mana (I didn’t notice the harder difficulties weren’t unlocked from the start (I’m a sucker for even bad JRPGs with inflated difficulties ok)) but I just can’t get through it on low difficulty once, it feels like trying to eat a big bowl of sugary cereal w/ milk when you’re a 90 years old retired chef

did you get it on steam

do you just want one of my save files

Nah I got it on the switch I just have to accept my loss

Thanks though

you are literally the second person I have offered and given me the same response

you’re gonna miss out on all the one-shot attacks

the legend of holy swords: trails of cold mana

i liked trails of mana a lot lol. it was cute. i wish the female characters costume designs weren’t so lewd though. other than that it just felt like a very charmingly done remake. i really want to explore more 3D cartoony versions of old SNES games like that.

been really enjoying paradise killer, even though every interesting element of the game is also fairly inherently flawed!

it’s a real chewy meal, lots of component parts that prop each other up – the dialog trees are almost onerous, the exploration doesn’t quite support the pacing, the characters feel a little too much like a suda cover act, the economy is peculiarly restrictive… they could’ve had a vastly better game on their hands, and even so it’s hard to mind!

People are talking about SoM I must link SoM+.

Also say that Secret of Evermore is bad.

I’ll take you up on that offer. I was considering playing Trials and playing on normal to unlock hard mode is one of my least favorite things. First it’s a mushy experience, second there’s less sense of accomplishment for beating things on hard because I “already beat them”
