I understand all of your points, yet I really love playing 3D Land and 3D World. These games’ mechanics and presentation speak to my soul in a very intuitive way that is difficult to argue for critically. I have a great time with them every time, and I think they’re video games of the highest order (and I don’t even like Mario games all that much). I’m sorry.
None of those problems are necessarily exclusive to 3D Land/World though. That’s just the price of making 3D platformers that adhere to linear level design. The Crash games are arguably even more restrictive in player movement and have similar issues.
Sandbox platformers that revolve around non-linear exploration and item collection don’t run into these issues as much because their levels tend to be designed so that failure is a momentary setback, and not so much a hard failure state.
Sandbox platformers don’t do much for me, and I’d almost always go with a linear platformer instead, even with the issues translating it to 3D.
Yep, Crash is the real villain of this story
i don’t think i can abide this comparison
Just clicking on new posts didn’t see the thread and just assumed you meant
and, yes, always true
i need to post this in videogame things you think about a lot already, fuck
eheheh
it felt pretty reductive to type it out but I do like Weather Report and '70s Miles Davis in a similar way; I like the funk bands parallel to Weather Report more because they’re more honest to their danceability and '70s Miles isn’t '60s Miles
and 2.5D Mario is nice but certainly not as good as 2D Mario or the best of 3D Mario
this is truly a BustedAstromech signature move

honestly the best of 70s miles might be my favorite miles. the way this turns into a fucking melvins song at around 19:45
yeah Peak Angry miles is the good shit. dark magus, agharta, pangea are all amazing. dark magus is maybe my favorite “gotta get some shit done but i’m mad i have to do it” record, that thing is just pure driving frustration
not to mention the sick tadanori yokoo cover art for the non-US agharta release
edit: fuck! i forgot on the corner was from the 70s too. also a perfect record
Also really liked the more upbeat/mellow near proto ambient stuff where he was mostly on atonal organ and his Minnie Riperton “Lovin’ You” cover. Uh this thread took a cool turn lol
the definition of cool
Doom 64 was basically my first hands-on experience playing a Doom game (I grew up with Macs). Revisiting it now is showing me how far it strays from the original Doom games, and I love it so much for that! It’s so colorful! It’s so tense! And the music sounds like Lab Report or something.
It feels much better than the originals
Still playing Strider. I appreciate that you can still crouch and slide on 30 degree slopes, only being able to run down steeper slopes kind of sucks, maybe having a roll like you do when you take a hit would be cool. I like that the short robots with cossacks don’t explode when you run into each other, you’ll roll down a slope together. I also like when the human sized mooks crawl backwards. The one flying the bomber ends stage 2 and since you’ll both take damage on contact, I end it with a murder suicide and the clear screen shows only Hiryu‘s hair and feet. You can also die after killing the final boss and you’ll reassemble to do your victory jump.
If you go to the very left of the ship on stage 3 you can see a possessed panda doll hiding behind some missiles. I got a laugh out of the piranhas latching onto Hiryu, and how they don’t do damage. Only the ones summoned by the final boss hurt because they explode.
Got 14 holes in my Golftopia course and I’m running out of ideas. But I’m sure I can squeeze out 4 more holes eventually.
The arc of this game is:
- Build some holes and wait for cash to come in. People are easy to please because the course is new
- People sign up to be members. They pay more, but they expect more from you. Build more challenging and interesting holes to make them happy.
- People increase their membership level - now they’re really good at your course, AND their complaints are 3x more impactful on your ratings.
- Early holes start being a problem because they’re “too easy.” Go back and add sand traps and fans and bumpers
- Platinum member freaks out and punches someone because a hole is “over automated” i.e. too easy. Well fuck you then, how about I put a sand trap around the green??? Wait that actually made you happy??
- All holes are now a nightmare of sand traps, mud, and bumpers. Platinum members, who pay your bills, are extremely happy. Basic members better get better at golf or fucking leave
I’m exaggerating, BUT this is kind of happening. Like, my very first hole is a nice little uphill climb but now that people have done it so many times, they’re bored. So I made the bunkers really huge and now it’s like threading a needle.
I imagine this is what happens to all games as a service, and why they all become these intimidating nightmares catering to the few mega-pros.
Still really enjoying it! After all, golf courses are all about catering to the privileged few who can afford to play on them. I don’t think this is unrealistic, and just makes me hate rich people more IRL.
I think what I’m really saying is that gamers and golfers are huge babies who want the appearance of difficulty while still being guided by an invisible hand to victory. 10% of all attempts should fail just to make the other 90% seem more skill-based than they really are.
also this makes lots of sense because golf is the ultimate Capitalist game for Rich People who believe that their whole life was about all the effort they were making, but really they were guaranteed a victory from the second they were born
