would not recommend either of these games, and it doesn’t seem like three relates in any way (Besides being set around the same city of baldur’s gate) to the first two games.

All the D&D crpgs have something fucked up going on with them. BG1 has a terrible beginning, and in both the RTWP combat is gormy. Eye of the Beholder is also quasi-realtime in a very frustrating way not really supported by the controls. Temple of Elemental Evil has an interminable intro. Neverwinter Nights has terrible writing. There’s never been a really good one.

ssi goldbox games only have a difficult interface, dark sun: shattered lands feels more like proto-fallout than wasteland, knights of the chalice is pretty good

It’s clearly the best one but the combat is garbaggio. I mean it’s passable but a waste of time, would have been better as a point and click adventure game

in that regard, planescape torment is par for the course for a mid-late 90s video game, unfortunately.

Still, it remains a curate’s egg: parts of it are bad, parts of it are good.

Finished Aria of Sorrow. I liked it, though it’s definitely the comfort food choice of the GBA trilogy. It lacks the aesthetic maximalism of Harmony or the hefty clunkiness of Circle, but everything in it is uniformly competent and aware of how it is contributing to the game holistically — it feels like a theoretical perfect orb sphere of a game, in a way.

It did take a while for the game to click with me though — somewhere between exploring the Hanging Gardens and getting double KO’d by Death. The castle is a very solidly put together map and I started liking the bosses much more by that point.

I was surprised that the Claimh Solais was just a slightly hidden pickup and not a rare drop (guess I was getting it confused with the Crissaegrim or whatever from SotN). Feels perversely overpowered for how easy it is to get.

I had some trouble getting used to the backdash-on-a-cooldown. HoD spoiled me rotten with it’s two separate, spammable dash buttons.

Not sure I’m fond of how IGA writes women in his stories.

was slightly irked by how many backgrounds had a full moon for a game that supposedly takes place during an eclipse (someone explain the cosmology at work here plz)

idk what else to say about the game right now. everything that’s coming to mind is some variation of “boy, that sure was a solid ingot of vidconium” or something trite

Overall, my ordering of the games would probably be HoD > AoS > CotM. HoD definitely had some issues with the map design; however, I suspect that if I were to replay it knowing where to go that that would be much less of an issue (or not, I don’t actually know yet lol). As for Circle, I’m not sure if I could ever gel with the DSS system as it’s implemented in the vanilla game.

Technically you are in the eclipse, which is where Dracula’s castle was sealed. The castle tends to be outside of normal time and space in this era of Castlevania:

So my explanation is “the castle itself is its own pocket dimension, and the moon you’re seeing is likely not even Earth’s normal moon. It’s likely full because monsters just loooove a full moon”

Alternate explanation: full moons are cool

I mean if you’re in an eclipse, astronomically you should be between the moon and the sun, right? So you’d see a full moon (and just the atmosphere around a floating castle would be too thin to have a sky color and now I’m overthinking this).

Being inside an eclipse is kinda like being inside your own shadow, it doesn’t make any sense anyway so might as well just go hog wild. Why not six moons and a sun and a big bloody head?

My wrist felt good enough to try The Good Life since that seemed low stress. Then it has R1 as stamina based run button. Well.

The music is nice and extremely fair-use. It plays over everything which is somewhere between no-budget and theme park. The prescence of voice acting is also erratic.

I’m already meeting the cooky cast of characters that make up Rainy Woods. I would feel a little bit better about the game if the American I am playing as didn’t constantly state “Fetch Quest” and “Feels Like an RPG.” Fuck offff.

I mean I want to say it but I played it for two hours.

I want someone from the UK to tell me why the architecture of the town, or the history, or the accents, or the class dynamics are wrong. They feel wrong.

There are so many jokes about Swery’s Alcoholism. Not even the player character’s directly referencing that Swery really has a fucking problem.

You can buy that little brown bottle for hangovers though.

The point is you don’t even get a transformation sequence for the cat/dog forms just a flash of light then animal. And animorphs and An American Werewolf in London have taught me transformation sequences are the only things that matter.

The world map is really really distressingly big.

this was not my experience.

Echoes Of The Eye felt frustrating in ways the original Outer Wild never did once you get outside the base planet. Recalling the weakest section might be seen as a misstep and granted at this point some post game warp core wouldn’t feel out of place but the game’s new torus is pretty fun! Feels nicely secretive and a nice tension to it like the dark bramble section has (although I couldn’t get one of the endings in ways that feel like a glitch).

Yeah the Outer Wilds devs said on the Noclip podcast that they’re working on a patch to ease the most irritating parts. It wasn’t intended to require that much brute-forcing.

Personally I ended up looking up the end result and skipped over them to the ending. I enjoyed them for the initial experience but then started to feel the salt rise in me, and moved on before it really overstayed its welcome.
