Until tonight, I had never played or even seen Quake. I just completed the first episode. It’s an odd and interesting game.

Be sure to set resolution to low for maximum gritty vintage aesthetic

@DaleNixon’s GT2 thread got me to boot up Gran Turismo 1 again after a year of neglect. I had been hard stuck on license test A-4, which has single-handedly taken me more time to get than getting all licenses in every other Gran Turismo game combined. I finally got it, and now I can finally do more stuff in the game.

GT1 only has 4 required events (1 B, 2 A, 1 I-A) to beat the game’s simulation mode, so if it wasn’t for the license tests being absolute bullshit difficulty compared to GT2 onward, it would make a nice little replayable bite-sized Gran Turismo experience and I think it would be more fondly remembered than it currently is.

I also have no idea how qualifying work in this game. No matter what I do, I am always consistently 7-15 seconds behind on the second to last qualifying time, even though I can easily overtake everyone and win the race. Once I discovered you can skip qualifiers (though awkwardly, only from the pause menu once the qualifier has begun), I just skip them all unless it’s on a track I don’t remember very well and want to get some practice laps on first.

Gran Turismo is cool, and I still hunger for more.

:sickos:

They completely ditched qualifiers in GT2. I’m assuming they got plenty of negative feedback about them. I only ever did well in qualifiers when my car was leagues above the others in the race. Still, I thought they were a nice way to stretch your legs before a race with the potential of getting a good starting position.

The early GT games are very good! I would encourage anyone even mildly curious to check them out. Even if you don’t particularly care about cars/racing or even driving!

Gran Turismo is the only reason I care about cars at all. My mom routinely mocks me for not knowing how to drive (or wanting to learn how to drive) but knowing way too much about cars anyway.

owning and driving a car is a terrible collective experience but cars are very cool machines. my favorite job ever was being an oil technician because it was incredibly chill and I learned so much. it’s actually a miracle that I got hired because I had no credentials and my driver’s license was expired (they found out much later because they didn’t check for some reason but that’s why i got fired)

my time doing oil changes sucked. so many burns on my arms from people who would come in right off the highway (I got really good and just scraping off dead skin, eww). a special level of appreciation for the shittiness of mazda oil filter placements at the time. But I did enjoy it a lot, at least until my carpal tunnel flared up really bad and I had to stop.

dodge 1500s are my least favorite because you have to twist your arm through a web of pipes just to reach the filter from an awkward position and then have it drip fucking everywhere

yeah, those were fucking terrible. any of the ones where you had to be at all near the exhaust system were such a shit show.

the smaller mazdas of the 90s put their filters up basically around the suspension on the passenger side, IIRC, and it was a real pain to get to with my giant hands.

Yep. My Miata has the filter in that location. Probably because they took the engine from the 323 and rotated it 90 degrees for the FR layout. It’s impossible to change the oil without cutting your hands/arms and getting an oil bath!

I can reach down and unscrew the oil filter on my 2 without even jacking it up. It’s such an easy job!

Cool, glad it wasn’t my memory being off. I hated those cars so much for that; otherwise, totally cool cars, but fuck that oil filter. It’s like the size of a thimble for Andre the Giant too, making it feel even more pointless how much work it is to get to.

The last time I got an oil change i was in the car the whole time and the guy was cussing the whole time and then was like “who the hell did this the last time? what was their name?” “did they even change it?” “how the hell you get this thing off?” me: “uhh gotta take off the wheel?” “god damnit” etc. he finally like impressed on me to remember his name and made sure i asked for him next time or else. ominous oil change

I watched somebody stream this the other day and good heavens the attempts at presentational fidelity do this game no favors — clownshoes everywhere.

Like, even with the existing script, I could see this working better if it had more traditional VN stylings or were a ZZT game or something. All the voice acting and the awkwardly chained mocapped actions just serve to highlight the artifice and inhumanity of the thing. It’s really depressing/hilarious to see.

bloodstained classic mode is full of cute little references, and it’s obvious iga and his team have much more respect and love for castlevania than anyone still at konami.

panzer dragoon remake is incredibly pretty and fun to play. i wouldn’t object to a zwei remake from the same people

Been playing Quake :sunglasses:
Dissolution of Eternity was alright. I like Scourge of Armagon more.

beat super mario galaxy last night and got all 120 stars, only to be told that now i have the privilege of getting the same 120 stars again, but this time as luigi! there are very few games in which “do everything again!” comes across as a reward rather than punishment, and galaxy is not one of them.

there is also a special place reserved in the hell of my heart for games that require precision 3d platforming yet also change camera angles at a whim and constantly make it unclear what a directional input is going to actually do on-screen. evil game design.

playing elminage original, which is a pretty fun wizardry-like (given that it’s made by the devs of several post sir-tech wizardry games, one should hope it’s good). messing with the psp version for blogging purposes.

admittedly, the dungeon design(s) are a bit spartan, but something i appreciate is the rest of the art, particularly the monster designs.

something else that’s really cool is that, of the many character classes you can have, one of them is maid. like to imagine some goth lolita is out there slaying dragons.

these textures for the forest are not so cool, though

did not mess with the custom face portraits or the custom soundtrack options, but i’m glad those are in there.
