Games You Played Today: 13 Going On 30

You are making me want to buy back a PS3 to play Blood Curse!!

iguferon inspired me to go back and finish my save file of Rise of the Tomb Raider that I had left at 74% complete years ago. Now I’m playing Shadow of the Tomb Raider next on a new save file because it’s been so long since I started it. Going to see if I can go the distance on the hardest difficulty where the game only saves at base camps and before the occasional scripted set piece sequence.

It is really funny how this whole trilogy of game is basically Surf Dracula: Tomb Raider Edition. Three games to go from ā€œtomb raiding is optionalā€ to ā€œwe just start you out tomb raiding like you were expectingā€. It has been interesting to see the development go from bad in the 2013 game to better in the 2015 game and then the 2018 is so far even better and finally approaches what you might expect from a AAA Tomb Raider game.

Someone managed to make a neat game in 1996 and they’ve just been trying to figure out what to do with it ever since. I read that next year’s Tomb Raider Catalyst is going to be a sequel to 2008’s Tomb Raider Underworld. Like okay what lol. Sure why not.

I’m not so sure about Bakeru. Enemies are like vibing and square dancing to the BGM, or sitting on benches enjoying the view, and I just waltz in and start beating them with sticks, unprovoked.

Played the Sega Channel content release from VGHF.

Highlights:
My brother and I beat the Batman and Robin preview which was a ton of fun. What a great game. You really need save states. Restarting the whole level and running through rote fights to get to the part you need to practice sucks. Feels like a Treasure game. Lots of demo sceney trickery and a great soundtrack. Two player really recommended.

Garfield Caught in the Act: The Lost Levels was interesting. It has developer comments between the stages. The Stages are not finished. The Ice stage was trying to do physics half pipes what never got worked out properly. The low-grav Space Stage is a very weird mess with alt paths and a random invincible enemy. The train stage was part of the way to an interesting idea. You have a looping stage with a train track and a passing train you have to get on top of and fight your way to the front. Getting hit by the train is an instant death so without save states your probably going to end up gaming over here before you figure out how to get on the train.

The menu demos were interesting. The tips and tricks stuff seems like it would have been genuinely interesting at the time. The browser demo was wild to see.

I’ve recently stopped attacking these enemies entirely in videogames (including those who do contact damage but don’t attack) because of my kid and it mostly makes every experience better.

Big resentment towards Zelda Echoes of Wisdom recently for making me kill a nice rain frog to absorb their essence and finish a sidequest

is this good btw, it’s on sale rn and I’ve been getting a lot of mileage out of later switch releases that I ignored at the time now that they have performance upgrades but it looks right on the line for me

I’ve only played through the first dungeon so take this with a grain of salt, but it seems pretty mid to me. The vibes are really not there, very Zelda-by-numbers with the most boring music I’ve ever heard in a Zelda game. The gameplay conceit of capturing and deploying images of objects and monsters seems clever on its surface but I suspect it’s already running out of interesting wrinkles even this early into the game. And I’m really not looking forward to paging through 200 images later in the game every time I want to do anything.

I got pretty grumpy with the game by the end. Starts out incredible but quickly has the same UI and structure problems as BotW/TotK with a fraction of the novelty.

I played Echoes of Wisdom over several months with my kid and had a great time. The summoning carried it the whole game. Agree with all the critics though, I’d have probably been bored playing alone.

Other games

Urban Myth Dissolution Center has a very unnatural translation. It felt like each sentence was translated separately without context, NES style. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone playing in English. It ruins the whole thing. Love our creepy boy though

Logic Bombs is a puzzler from former youtuber Matthewmatosis. It’s like Picross with a different set of rules and ultra-hard. Just like Picross there’s this satisfaction of solving a puzzle piece by piece and slowly interiorizing new tricks. The higher number of rules makes it a much bigger challenge to tackle.
This game insists a bit too much on how there’s no guesswork involved. What little text it has is all in favor of reinforcing this idea. The level selection screen says Ā« Logic Bomb. A realm of pure logic Ā» Absolute nerd shit. But also a bit charming.

Promise Mascot Agency
I was sure I was going to have a bad time but tried this in virtue of how much I enjoyed Paradise Killer back then. I had a Ā« why am I even playing videogames Ā» moment 30 minutes in. I should have trusted myself.

Stray Children
I powered through this after a bad first hour and did well to not trust myself. I was constantly surprised by the creativity on display here inside and outside battles.
The game is a series of mostly unconnected vignettes, but the weight of the shared themes really got to me after a while and I was unexpectedly moved by the last stretch

youngest remembered a Switch game they liked that they played at a (moved-away) friend’s house years ago, so now I’m learning how Super Smash Bros. Ultimate works. I’m an old man! my prime was long ago! how do I ā€œspecialā€ or ā€œstop falling on my ass as once again Kirby knocks me off the platformā€

dug up a GC controller ↔ USB adapter I picked up for lockdown entertainmen. wow these controller cables feel short

this is very disappointing to hear. after all the jp game devs were singing its praises recently, i was gonna import a copy. maybe i still will, but i’m not as excited to do so. probably for the best, i already have a ludicrous backlog of long games to get through.

i did just make the backlog a little bit shorter, though, since i just (less than ten minutes ago!) finished shin megami tensei v! what a great fuckin game, with a gripping story of the kind you don’t seem to see in modern videogames very often. it’s got a new game+, but it’s gonna be a long long time before i go and replay a 60 hour game, wtf

This sounds like so much my jam but the fact they included a gameboy rom with it means that rather than just play it on my PC I’m gonna wait and figure out/try to remember how to import it onto a flashcard I have use for gameboy games on my DS even though it is surely an inferior version.

Finally getting around to Disco Elysium. I know pretty much nothing of the games except for the memes. Failed a perception check twice checking out some corrugated roof material that’s clearly hiding something.

Going to make a shocking announcement here - Shadow of the Tomb Raider is fucking boring. I don’t want to unlock the ability to do basic shit for the third time. This one has big time racism energy and I could start feeling it the second the game opened with a disclaimer assuring me it wasn’t racist. Why do you guys even have to make Lara responsible for mass murdering the locals anyway. Can’t she ever do anything right in this trilogy? I was doing a tomb, which of course is optional and the same exact shit as the other two games still somehow, and the whole time I was thinking I should play Tomb Raider 1 again, perhaps we could dare to insert some joie de vivre back into tomb raiding. Maybe I should actually try to learn the tank controls this time as a challenge. Maybe I should get a fucking hole in my head, or do literally anything else than play more tomb raider reboot

They should make a Tomb Raider game that’s about…ah…smoking weed. Bong Raider. Tomb Raider 1 style movement though.
