Games You Played Today: 13 Going On 30

the person who made this [I think moved to rather than lived all along in] Vancouver and showed up at the diner across the street from my building with a Mother 2 sukajan during the month in 2022 that they were closing and selling off decorations and was really nice and chill, I think I had to coax out of them that they worked on it after saying “nice jacket”. unfortunately after going there for breakfast every weekend and getting free coffee for 10 years that was kind of the end of the neighborhood for me but I hope they found a new diner to go to!!!

Come on there are probably three or four doors over there.

I forgot to mention, SPIRITFARER has great co-op… well, one player gets to be the cat and can do everything the main player can do except talk to people. Had a great time exploring and managing the ship with my partner.

I’m pretty proud of myself for this one. Maybe I don’t need to play this anymore…

Oh I’m in no risk of dying. But if I try to do precision platforming with a hostile camera on a timer I will cry.

Solved in less than 7 minutes for me, in case someone wants a par for “bad at the game but has played it several times”

Richter mode in Portrait of Ruin is really fun shame it would involve replaying Portrait of Ruin.

and immediately got three requests from ppl trying to scam me by offering to buy my literal ~0.5% chance ship lootbox for under a fifth of its actual value because THE GAME ANNOUNCES IT TO EVERYONE WHEN YOU PULL ONE meaning everyone saw that I got it before I even fucking noticed it and the vultures swept in hoping I’d be dumb as shit

(mothra’s screenshots)

I of course opened it so I could enjoy this ship that just came out that I haven’t seen anyone in at all because it fits my character’s theme

Absolutely nuts. This simply does not happen in Star Trek Online.

Helldivers added bug caves, bug dragons, burrowing bugs, and Shai-Hulud. Probably the best update they’ve done so far.

I successfully transferred my Druddigon, named Niddhogr ( :female_sign:), from Pokemon X to Pokemon White. It was a somewhat involved process but it worked without anything going wrong, so this is fantastic news. There are like six different generations of Pokemon game on the DS/3DS, not counting emulation of older titles, which I think can also be transferred to and from, but which I probably won’t ever want to play again. And in principle this can be used to transfer to Switch titles, and even emulated Switch titles, which is going to come in handy for Sword and Scarlett, probably also with end game pre-elite four transfers. Druddigon is now my highest level pokemon by ten levels.

I burned through Psuedoregalia in a day. Which you have to otherwise the lay out of the world and the strange moveset would fall right out of your mind. 10/10 weird movement set and the freedom to let you futz with it. My one complaint is I wish there was a bit more to look at, ever, in the game.

I never fully clicked with the moveset so passed on all the bonus challenges. Seeing how absolutely free form the world was was a treat. Another for the top 10 of the year.

Amazed it was made in 4 months (must have been tough) and is as much a Full Video Game as it is.

Glad Tigress mentioned there was a pants option. I’m a coward and I was willing to take Pants On.

Final Fight CD may not be the best version of that game, but it might be my favorite (that i’ve played; willing to bet the X68K version is special, too). i think the Genesis was better at capturing the feeling of arcade games than the SNES, but it’s the redbook audio soundtrack that is such a treat for the ears for me. fully voiced cutscenes, too. what an indulgent period for games.

Berserk or Die is a horde beat-em-up with the gimmick that the whole keyboard is used for attacks. A narrow band controls defending one direction or another (6,t,g,b – Left; 7,y,h,n – Right), both Ctrls activate a super, and the rest of the keyboard can be proportionally mashed to do different moves. It frames the game as playable using your entire hand but I don’t think the game actually wants you to play this way, it actually rewards a much more precise control scheme. You can switch the controls to a more simplified row of a,s,d,f,g,h,j,k,l,; which you can rest your fingers on (defending with the index fingers on g and h). Depending on how many attack buttons you press in rapid sequence, you do different moves, effectively a light, medium, and heavy move though you can combo them into one another if you are very precise. You cannot move your character except by attacking. Light uses less stamina but moves you very little, heavy uses the most stamina but kills a lot of mooks over a wide area. Apart from some levels where your mobility is very limited you generally want to spam heavy. I do not see how you can progress very well using the advertised control scheme.

There is an interesting tension with the attack options and how much they move you since you need to be able to move to collect currency and get away from, and prepare for, bigger threats. But at the same time it feels frustrating because you will do a powerful attack and then get stuck in unwinnable scenarios unless you really pace things. Bosses are the worst case since they seem to break the rule that hitting something either kills it or stops its onward progress. Bosses will just progress through you no matter what and boomerang from left to right until dead but there is nothing you can do to really stop from being in a hitbox that might end a run. Being touched by a boss equals a hit but it probably should have something more akin to a telegraphed attack that the player can dodge, block, or counter in the same way that other enemies behave. Just touching the boss feels like a shitty way to go in a game that is trying to prop up a power fantasy so hampered by stamina as a resource.

Ultimately it extols mash but requires precision. One Finger Death Punch retains the crown for this type of game because it requests you do something and makes no confusion about the results when you respond to said request and it feels good to be precise. It feels like there’s a missed opportunity to more drastically change how the player affects their own attacks or powers up things based on how many keys they simultaneously hit. You can get random loot on some runs with special abilities and there is a roguelike merchant who appears every night of a run to sell modifiers but I think they should have just abandoned this sort of pseudo-balance and systems built around it and made something that focused entirely on feeling good from how the inputs resolve chaotically. I should be powerful from bashing the keyboard, not powerful with a caveat.

I beat all of the Elite 4 except the champion, then saved, then beat N, then lost to Ghetsis. This seems like a bad omen. I just quit at that point without saving. I will try again with an actual strategy. Maybe I will hit up the department store for stat buffs beforehand.

since the latest ares update included support for the Pioneer LaserActive, i’m currently trying to download I Will: The Story of London

but because the only rip of the LD i can find is on archive.org, and it’s a direct download, it’s going to take 22 hours.

I beat Ghetsis, and the game rolled credits. Have Zekrom. Named them Ladastryka. 19:06 clear time, if we’re counting that as cleared. I did technically beat all of the elite four except for the champion. Very on the fence about whether to call that done. The champions pokemon are all high level 70 and mine are high 40 to low 50 so I might just count this as done.

So my MisterPi finally came in, and so I have been testing it out in some of the most me ways possible. I forgot to get the BIOS files at first, so I couldn’t test the Saturn core, so I tested the Gameboy first with Wizardry Gaiden, then the NES with Crystalis, and then I went and got some more BIOS and such and tried out PCEngine Ys III.

And then I did what I originally meant to be my first game and booted up Virtual Hydlide for the first time ever in my whole life and holy shit, this is my hole, so very much. I got third on the scoreboard on my first life. This game rules so much. I’m sorry I ever doubted you, Tokihiro Naito.
