Bad news everyone - they removed the goal based career mode from tony hawk 4 where there’s no timer but you run around harassing homeless guys and making elephants poop in the remake … instead you get to do the classic two minute run mode. this is truly a great loss for humanity

it’s funny how 3 and 4 have been purged of whatever personality they had, for better and worse, a road full of immature scribbles by twentysomething basement dwellers paved over with pitch black corporate asphalt, but iron galaxy can’t even assume some moral superiority since they did allow a hateful crack addicted pedophile back into the game after tony hawk interfered personally. his dynamic with margera never changed from underground 2 where bam kept abusing disabled people, shooting his naked dad in the balls and calling random NPCs slurs and tony stood right next to him with a shy vacant smile, sharing wisdom such as “you can grab the edge of a wall pressing R1 and moving sidewards”. the most benevolent of enablers
my main issue about 4’s redesign is that these levels were obviously not made for the timer structure, the flow is all wrong since they’re supposed to be about exploration, NPC presence and setpieces. more than two decades later I don’t need to step into elephant poop to be entertained but maybe don’t remove all the animals from the zoo when you’re creating a “skating in the zoo” fantasy. maybe the 2025 cruise ship doesn’t need Seven Neversoft Babes but maybe come up with an original replacement, something more equal opportunity perhaps, instead of just pasting the Canada skaters in there. maybe I don’t need the chad muska n-word song but ripping out most of 4’s soundtrack when 3 is treated way more favorably feels sad. idk, the originals are the kind of stuff that would definitely need a “product of its time” warning, but at least they express some kind of truth about their times instead of just leaving a void where the problematic human touch used to be
and the influence of the void feels present everywhere. the art direction expresses nothing but love for unreal engine’s horsepower, a sanitized, context-free and personality-free vision of skating, the menus/UX design still as cheap and depressing as they used to be in 1+2. the NG+ set of goals is nice ig but it’s mindboggling that they removed all the dozens of millions legendary board score challenges for each level, what used to be a 25 mil challenge in 1+2 is now a 2 mil challenge in this, the skill ceiling radically reduced when a more advanced NG++++… cycle would be super easy to create. the scoring system is busted in a multiple ways community has been complaining about for a long time. the PC version has a constant stutter. idk what I’d get from buying this instead of playing thugpro/rethawed, I guess a lingering sense of guilt from breaking the Microsoft boycott?

Rockman Dash (MML) was so good I couldn’t take it so loaded up a random save from disc 2 of Xenogears and found out I could get destroyed at PC Engine Pornographic Koikoi. The Mister is an amazing product that makes this possible.

I pirated it because I was curious and annoyed that I could only find people complaining about the soundtrack which tbh I don’t care that much about either because when I played 4 on my Xbox I got sick of the chad muska n word song and ac/dc and started using the custom soundtrack feature lol
Them changing the soundtrack is largely because of the intervention of tony hawk. That’s like the one thing he said in interviews he interfered with. Tony hawk loves 100 gecs. I think this goes along with them putting a ton of young skaters in the game etc like trying to make it appealing the way it was originally to teenagers. except 100 gecs is old people music. he even said to just listen to the old soundtrack while you play it you don’t like it lmao
personally I was not a huge fan of the career mode in 4 because a lot of the goals were stupid but I really like that game so…I don’t really get the changes to the levels I don’t see why zoo and kona had to be made into purely competition levels to accomodate the change in career mode because they’re still fucking huge. All the levels are fucking huge which is why they changed the career mode to begin with!
the censorship stuff in games really bothers me a lot because it is so often stupid … the guy on Canada isn’t allowed to pee anymore, successfully preventing our children from learning of bladder. they might as well pledge to never make thug or thug2 because the entire game is full of unsavory bullshit - I would prefer they did this actually, no one should have to play thug2 story mode. I don’t really care because it’s a skateboarding game and I don’t miss the bikini ladies on the boat, they aren’t there in thugpro either.
The bumfights stuff and just dumb 2000s asshole shit in those games always sucked, the worst part of hanging out with skaters. If they are truly trying to make a game for new audience like tony hawk says I understand why you’d jettison it. It’s not a faithful remake anymore but it’s not like any of these games needed remakes, there’s so many options if you want to go and play old tony hawk…

i just want to point out that while i do not like bam margera because he sucks it’s not because he’s a pedophile - his uncle is, which we’ve known for like over a decade. drugs is kind of a weird thing to hold against him, the man is literally a skateboarder, it sucks that he didn’t quit with like the other jackass guys but that’s life I guess. he also just got out of rehab so why denigrate him for being addicted to hard drugs? it’s not crack or pills that make him act like a fucking prick

I have never ever felt cool with any lolcow type gaping at people, but with Bam in particular it was very very weird to see people who have expressed love for these games or its adjacent things, dating as far back as cky, perpetuate the spectacle around him without any convincing displays of empathy/sympathy. He seems like a dick, but I just don’t think that’s what most people focus on.

yeah I didn’t want to pile on him for being addicted (esp with all the shit he’s been through, I really wasn’t happy his part in jackass forever ended up how it did), it’s just that it’s been a common knowledge in his parts that drugs make him act out in all sorts of terrible ways, including pursuing underage girls pretty aggressively. I was mostly focused on how his inclusion jars against the general spirit of the project, the ancient ghost of neversoft haunting the squeaky clean microsoft software

One of my favorite things in Rise of the Tomb Raider is how, in order to pad the game with stuff to do, you’re running around Siberia like a 1980s action hero, vandalizing old Soviet flags and cosmonaut posters and stuff.
Like it’s established in this timeline that Lara was born in 1993, why’s a posh British kid who came of age after 9/11 going all Reaganite out here.
I can’t remember if I found this place the first time around, but it was kinda cool. Lotta explosive fart gas everywhere.
