games you beat more than once fsr

https://backloggd.com/u/dogs/list/games-i-beat-more-than-once-fsr/

kinda-sorta ranked based on how ‘worthwhile’(?) i think playing more than once was. idk.

i truly-ruly have no idea why i played tomb raider 2013 all the way through twice. it was the first time i’d ever played that kind of prestige triple-A type game – and up until writing this i thought it was maybe the only time i’d played one of those, but then i remembered that i’ve also played the last of us – but like… why? i couldn’t tell you.

there’s a few things on here which make total sense like the hobbit, which is just a game i had as a kid so i played it because what else was i supposed to do? ffcc is sorta the same except i only beat it when i was older (once solo when i was 18 and once two-player when i was like 20?). same with pokegold: once as a kid and once as an adult. ffcc i actually like, the others mostly just have sentimental value.

dear esther and proteus are kinda funny. they were my first walking sims and i think i played both of them all the way through a double-digit number of times. once i found out that you can just search “walking sim” on the internet i was off to the races (connor sherlock games would be on here loads if they like,,, had endings), but at the time this was all i had.

hld is similar cos it was my first action-y zelda-y(?) thing, and it offered a dickhead hard mode where you only have two pips of health (which, honestly, i think is better than the standard 4/5/whatever the default is), so i played that mode after i beat it the first time. idk how i feel about hld really.

ghost in the shell is just really cool and short and the best.

deidia is another early walking-sim type thing that i latched onto. it’s neat and short and has crazy graphics.

it’s also funny the games which get left out of a list like this: monhun 4U (for me?) i played for like 600+ hours (christ) but only the once. same with all the monhuns actually cos like… why would you start over? maybe i could argue that i beat generations/cross twice – once on threeds and once on switch – but like idk it’s not in the spirit of the list imo.
shumps are also not on here for the same reason; it just doesn’t really make sense. how does one ‘beat’ a shump? how does one ‘beat’ learning an instrument? i’m not writing rules for what can and can’t be included in your own list, just what i chose to include/exclude in order to clarify my results.

similarly, i realised while making this that there’s a subsection of games that i’ve beaten once but booted many times subsequently without actually beating them again. like, nu wolfenstein i’ve played almost all the way through like 3 times, same with rondo of blood, penny’s big breakaway, bloodborne (i honestly can’t remember if i’ve beaten bloodborne more than once, i don’t think so), and of course basically all the other games i had as a kid like star fox assault or luigi’s mansion.

perhaps a slightly more interesting spin-off list is games that i am sure i will beat again. like, some of the above apply for sure (can’t imagine i won’t beat nu wolf, rondo, or pbb again at some point in my life), but also there are a bunch of rpgs which i feel fairly confident i’ll want to play through again many years hence like ff15, drag dog, demon’s souls, or pan drag sag, as well as a buncha short stuff like ico, jumping flash, bulk slash, or sky odyssey.

anyway i’m far adrift now.

what have you finished more than once? was it worth it? will you do it again? what calls you back?

I really haven’t replayed a ton of games once I got out of childhood/only having so many games. Here’s the ones I can recall off the top of my head.

Demon’s Souls

Ico

Metal Gear Solid

Ys Origins (multiple characters needed for true ending)

various Tony Hawk games (different skaters)

Metroid Prime

Flower/Journey

R-Type Final

Childhood frequently beat games

Zelda: LttP

Super Metroid

Super Mario World

Contra

Super C

TMNT: the Arcade game & Turtles in Time

Breakthru

Kung Fu

Rampage

Gorf/Venture/Space Fury/Smurfs Rescue in Gargamel’s Castle (they looped so… maybe?)

There are probably some games I would like to revisit but I barely have enough time to play new to me stuff.

…Good call on Deidia BTW.

Ok so if we’re talking nominally narrative games with “campaign” or “story mode”s and not explicitly repeatable run-based games like shmups or 4Xs, and restrict “beat” to “beat the nominal ‘last boss’ and saw credits” (so dicking around in Skyrim for 500 hours or whatever doesn’t count) then… probably not that many? Especially if you restrict it to after childhood when we have less free time and much wider choice of games…

Do run n guns count? Are they more like shmups on the one hand or platformers on the other? Actually do platformers count? There’s a pretty good argument that at least one way of playing them is to replay often to demonstrate mastery, although that’s not how I play them…

As a kid:

Super Metroid
Chrono Trigger
Turtles in Time
Strider NES
SMB3
Doom
Doom 2
Diablo
Diablo 2 (hmm… do loot run grind games count…?)
Parappa the Rapper
Umjammer Lammy
Bust a Groove (basically a fighting game in structure… does that count…?)
Half-Life
Fallout
Max Payne 1 & 2

As an adult:

Space Marine
Half-Life 2
Unreal
Demon’s Souls
Myst
Uru
Dog Days
Max Payne 3
Portal
World of Warcraft D:

All-time high score:

FULL THROTTLE

I like this idea. I should make more personal lists like this on backloggd. It’s my favorite feature of theirs, really.

I have a few but one I beat at least once a year is 140
I just replayed Refunct like a dozen times trying to get the achievements (still haven’t done it in under 4 minutes but got 4:28)
All the modern FROM soulsy games except Elden Ring and Sekiro (which I’ve never beaten)
I’ve played through Portal and Portal 2 a couple times
Do roguelikey games count? I’ve done plenty of Slay the Spire, Vampire Survivors, Spelunky, many of those types.

I have bought Resident Evil 4 on…GameCube? Wii? PS2? 360? PC? I replayed it every time. Except PS2. That was worse than GameCube despite the new content – I didn’t bother!!

First game I ever replayed immediately after beating it was Pikmin. Then I played it again on Wii (not as good but fine). Maybe I played it again a few years ago I can’t remember.

I have beaten every Souls game many, many times. And Armored Core 6. I am counting Elden Ring/Bloodborne/Sekiro as Souls games.

All those 2D Metroids from Super to Zero Mission. Some of those Castlevanias too.

Mega Man 2 a billion times. Marios too. Some of the Zeldas.

Earthbound. FF4. FF6. Dragon Quest I, III.

Lucas Arts adventures. King’s Quests.

Probably some shootemers I can’t think of.

Dead Rising. Bayonetta. Lots of those games with Capcom DNA I guess. Some Halos. Doom.

There was a summer where my friends and I would beat Contra every single day.

There are probably more than this. I like video games more than I thought.

i usually don’t do that but now that i try to remember there were a couple:

DooM shareware
Secret of Mana (to get all the weapon upgrades)
Donkey Kong Country (took less than an hour)
Super Mario World (borrowed twice)
Super Metroid (rented twice)
Super Bomberman (coop)
Symphony of the Night (PS1 and Saturn)

Hifi Rush

Sayonara Wild Hearts

Nier (I’ve played all 4 ending runs multiple times yes i am a sicko)

Every No More Heroes game except 3

Shadow of the Colossus

Demon’s Souls

God Hand

I used to play the pre-BotW 3D Zeldas alllll the time. Probably the time I regret wasting the most.

I feel like a good replay has the same qualities as a good rewatch. It’s a cosy space to inhabit, a project to sit with, a relaxed engagement where one can expend half of their attention yet discover new things.

I guess I beat most EDF games more than once, but that’s because they reward repeated plays on higher difficulties with better weapons and it’s pretty addictive especially in coop.

Like I beat all EDF2 levels on all five regular difficulties (not on the secret sixth however). Or I beat EDF5 offline with Ranger and online with Wing Diver. Or EDF4 once with Ranger and once with Fencer. Did 6 with Ranger again first time and am still working on Air Raider.
