i began working on this ages ago but lost the momentum to finish it, so now it’s open for anyone to change and add to. i’m not precious about the initial order and if you want to shift things around radically then go right ahead (and support your decisions in this thread if u like).
This is a list of notable video game companies that have made games for either computers (like PC or Mac), video game consoles, handheld or mobile devices, and includes companies that currently exist as well as now-defunct companies.
See the list of video games for other lists relating to video games, and defunct video game companies for a more specific list of companies that no longer exist. Many of the developers publish their own games.

but you can add any others that you like, they don’t need to be names from studios that are still around today.
the general rules are:
1: rate studios on the name alone, not the quality of the studio or its work.
2: keep the names in alphabetical order within their tiers.

i just thought it was so much cooler than any of the others lol no grand reasoning
how is Culture Brain only b tier…! imo that one is second only to alltime champion Pony Canyon in combination of mystery, allure and threateningness

I’m sorry I couldn’t decide if ‘Ultimate Play the Game’ is A tier or F tier, my feelings will NOT be hurt if it’s severely demoted.
EDIT: Moved to C Tier after brain cool down.

Tangentially related, but in recent years I feel like I’ve seen a lot of « narratively focused experience about losing a closed one » or « Manage a theater in 19th century Ukraine » type games coming from studios with names like « Stab & Kill & Loot & Repeat Software » and « Shoot the fucking zombie in the fucking head Studios »

oh hell yeah this is a great resource i’m putting this in the sheet and in the top post
I can already see the methodology falling apart if “Cave” is getting anything above C-tier.
imo Cave works because a videogame is a type of cave
